* Then came (5736 ) to Jesus scribes and Pharisees , which were of Jerusalem , saying (5723 ), * Why do thy disciples transgress (5719 ) the tradition of the elders ? for they wash (5731 ) not their hands when they eat (5725 ) bread . * But he answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ) unto them , Why do ye also transgress (5719 ) the commandment of God by your tradition ? * For God commanded (5662 ), saying (5723 ), Honour (5720 ) thy father and mother : and , He that curseth (5723 ) father or mother , let him die (5720 ) the death . * But ye say (5719 ), Whosoever shall say (5632 ) to his father or his mother , It is a gift , by whatsoever thou mightest be profited (5686 ) by me ; * And honour (5661 ) not his father or his mother , he shall be free . Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect (5656 ) by your tradition . * Ye hypocrites , well did Esaias prophesy (5656 ) of you , saying (5723 ), * This people draweth nigh (5719 ) unto me with their mouth , and honoureth (5719 ) me with their lips ; but their heart is (5719 ) far from me . * But in vain they do worship (5736 ) me , teaching (5723 ) for doctrines the commandments of men .
