* THE Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus , and , in order to put him to a test , asked him to show them a sign from heaven . riversident @Matthew:16:2 " /> riversident @Matthew:16:3 " /> * But he answered , and he left them and went away . * When the disciples got to the other side of the lake , they had forgotten to take bread , * and Jesus said to them , * They were discussing this among themselves , saying , "It is because we have brought no bread ." * But Jesus , when he knew it , said , riversident @Matthew:16:9 " /> riversident @Matthew:16:10 " /> riversident @Matthew:16:11 " /> * Then they understood that he had told them to beware not of the yeast of bread , but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees . * After corning into the neighborhood of Caesarea Philippi , Jesus asked his disciples , * They said , "Some say John the Baptist ; others say Elijah ; others Jeremiah or some one of the prophets ." * He said to them , * Simon Peter said , "You are the Christ , the Son of the living God ." * Jesus replied , * riversident @Matthew:16:19 " /> * Then he strictly charged his disciples not to tell any one that he was the Christ . * From that time Jesus began to make plain to his disciples that he had to go away to Jerusalem , and suffer greatly from the elders and high priests and scribes , and be killed and on the third day be raised . * Peter took him and began to reprove him , saying , "Please God , Sir ; this shall not happen to you ." * But he , turning , said to Peter , * Then Jesus said to his disciples , riversident @Matthew:16:25 " /> riversident @Matthew:16:26 " /> riversident @Matthew:16:27 " /> riversident @Matthew:16:28 " />
