* As soon as the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees , they gathered themselves together , * and one of them , a lawyer , tested him by asking a question . * "Master , which is the great commandment in the law ?" * Jesus answered , "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart , and with all thy soul , and with all thy mind . * "This is the great and first commandment . * "The second , which is like it , is this , "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself . * "On those two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets ."
