* Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness , to be tempted by the Devil . * And when he had tasted forty days and forty nights , he was afterward hungry . * And the tempter came and said to him , If thou art the Son of God , command that these stones become loaves of bread . * But he answered and said , It is written , "Man shall not live on bread alone , but on every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God ." * Then the Devil taketh him into the holy city , and setteth him on the pinnacle of the temple ; * and saith to him , If thou art the Son of God , cast thyself down ; for it is written , "He will give his angels charge concerning thee ; and in their hands they will bear thee up , that thou mayst not dash thy foot against a stone ." * Jesus said to him , Again it is written , "Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God ." * Again , the Devil taketh him m an exceeding high mountain , and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world , and their glory ; * and said to him , All these things will I give thee , if thou wilt fall down and worship me . * Then saith Jesus to him , Be gone , Satan ! for it is written , "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God , and him only shalt thou serve ." * Then the Devil leaveth him ; and lo ! angels came and ministered to him .
