* What shall we say (5692 ) then that Abraham our father , as pertaining to the flesh , hath found (5760 )? * For if Abraham were justified (5681 ) by works , he hath (5719 ) whereof to glory ; but not before God . * For what saith (5719 ) the scripture ? Abraham believed (5656 ) God , and it was counted (5681 ) unto him for righteousness . * Now to him that worketh (5740 ) is the reward not reckoned (5736 ) of grace , but of debt . * But to him that worketh (5740 ) not , but believeth (5723 ) on him that justifieth (5723 ) the ungodly , his faith is counted (5736 ) for righteousness . * Even as David also describeth (5719 ) the blessedness of the man , unto whom God imputeth (5736 ) righteousness without works , * Saying , Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven (5681 ), and whose sins are covered (5681 ). * Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute (5667 ) sin . * Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only , or upon the uncircumcision also ? for we say (5719 ) that faith was reckoned (5681 ) to Abraham for righteousness . * How was it then reckoned (5681 )? when he was (5752 ) in circumcision , or in uncircumcision ? Not in circumcision , but in uncircumcision . * And he received (5627 ) the sign of circumcision , a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised : that he might be (5750 ) the father of all them that believe (5723 ), though they be not circumcised ; that righteousness might be imputed (5683 ) unto them also : * And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only , but who also walk (5723 ) in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham , which he had being yet uncircumcised . * For the promise , that he should be (5750 ) the heir of the world , was not to Abraham , or to his seed , through the law , but through the righteousness of faith . * For if they which are of the law be heirs , faith is made void (5769 ), and the promise made of none effect (5769 ): * Because the law worketh (5736 ) wrath : for where no law is (5748 ), there is no transgression . * Therefore it is of faith , that it might be by grace ; to the end the promise might be (5750 ) sure to all the seed ; not to that only which is of the law , but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham ; who is (5748 ) the father of us all , * (As it is written (5769 ), I have made (5758 ) thee a father of many nations ,) before him whom he believed (5656 ), even God , who quickeneth (5723 ) the dead , and calleth (5723 ) those things which be (5752 ) not as though they were (5752 ). * Who against hope believed (5656 ) in hope , that he might become (5635 ) the father of many nations , according to that which was spoken (5772 ), So shall thy seed be (5704 ). * And being not weak (5660 ) in faith , he considered (5656 ) not his own body now dead (5772 ), when he was (5723 ) about an hundred years old , neither yet the deadness of Saras womb : * He staggered (5681 ) not at the promise of God through unbelief ; but was strong (5681 ) in faith , giving (5631 ) glory to God ; * And being fully persuaded (5685 ) that , what he had promised (5766 ), he was (5748 ) able also to perform (5658 ). * And therefore it was imputed (5681 ) to him for righteousness . * Now it was not written (5648 ) for his sake alone , that it was imputed (5681 ) to him ; * But for us also , to whom it shall be (5719 ) imputed (5745 ), if we believe (5723 ) on him that raised up (5660 ) Jesus our Lord from the dead ; * Who was delivered (5681 ) for our offences , and was raised again (5681 ) for our justification . * Therefore being justified (5685 ) by faith , we have (5719 ) peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ : * By whom also we have (5758 ) access by faith into this grace wherein we stand (5758 ), and rejoice (5736 ) in hope of the glory of God . * And not only so , but we glory (5736 ) in tribulations also : knowing (5761 ) that tribulation worketh (5736 ) patience ; * And patience , experience ; and experience , hope : * And hope maketh not ashamed (5719 ); because the love of God is shed abroad (5769 ) in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given (5685 ) unto us . * For when we were (5752 ) yet without strength , in due time Christ died (5627 ) for the ungodly . * For scarcely for a righteous man will one die (5695 ): yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare (5719 ) to die (5629 ). * But God commendeth (5719 ) his love toward us , in that , while we were (5752 ) yet sinners , Christ died (5627 ) for us . * Much more then , being now justified (5685 ) by his blood , we shall be saved (5701 ) from wrath through him . * For if , when we were (5752 ) enemies , we were reconciled (5648 ) to God by the death of his Son , much more , being reconciled (5651 ), we shall be saved (5701 ) by his life . * And not only so , but we also joy (5740 ) in God through our Lord Jesus Christ , by whom we have now received (5627 ) the atonement . * Wherefore , as by one man sin entered (5627 ) into the world , and death by sin ; and so death passed (5627 ) upon all men , for that all have sinned (5627 ): * (For until the law sin was (5713 ) in the world : but sin is not imputed (5743 ) when there is (5752 ) no law . * Nevertheless death reigned (5656 ) from Adam to Moses , even over them that had not sinned (5660 ) after the similitude of Adams transgression , who is (5748 ) the figure of him that was to come (5723 ). * But not as the offence , so also is the free gift . For if through the offence of one many be dead (5627 ), much more the grace of God , and the gift by grace , which is by one man , Jesus Christ , hath abounded (5656 ) unto many . * And not as it was by one that sinned (5660 ), so is the gift : for the judgment was by one to condemnation , but the free gift is of many offences unto justification . * For if by one mans offence death reigned (5656 ) by one ; much more they which receive (5723 ) abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign (5692 ) in life by one , Jesus Christ .) * Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation ; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life . * For as by one mans disobedience many were made (5681 ) sinners , so by the obedience of one shall many be made (5701 ) righteous . * Moreover the law entered (5627 ), that the offence might abound (5661 ). But where sin abounded (5656 ), grace did much more abound (5656 ): * That as sin hath reigned (5656 ) unto death , even so might grace reign (5661 ) through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord . * What shall we say (5692 ) then ? Shall we continue (5692 ) in sin , that grace may abound (5661 )? * God forbid (5636 ). How shall we , that are dead (5627 ) to sin , live (5692 ) any longer therein ? * Know ye not (5719 ), that so many of us as were baptized (5681 ) into Jesus Christ were baptized (5681 ) into his death ? * Therefore we are buried with (5648 ) him by baptism into death : that like as Christ was raised up (5681 ) from the dead by the glory of the Father , even so we also should walk (5661 ) in newness of life . * For if we have been (5754 ) planted together in the likeness of his death , we shall be (5704 ) also in the likeness of his resurrection : * Knowing (5723 ) this , that our old man is crucified with (5681 ) him , that the body of sin might be destroyed (5686 ), that henceforth we should not serve (5721 ) sin . * For he that is dead (5631 ) is freed (5769 ) from sin . * Now if we be dead (5627 ) with Christ , we believe (5719 ) that we shall also live (5692 ) with him : * Knowing (5761 ) that Christ being raised (5685 ) from the dead dieth (5719 ) no more ; death hath no more dominion over (5719 ) him . * For in that he died (5627 ), he died (5627 ) unto sin once : but in that he liveth (5719 ), he liveth (5719 ) unto God . * Likewise reckon (5737 ) ye also yourselves to be (5750 ) dead indeed unto sin , but alive (5723 ) unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord . * Let not sin therefore reign (5720 ) in your mortal body , that ye should obey (5721 ) it in the lusts thereof . * Neither yield ye (5720 ) your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin : but yield (5657 ) yourselves unto God , as those that are alive (5723 ) from the dead , and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God . * For sin shall not have dominion over (5692 ) you : for ye are (5748 ) not under the law , but under grace . * What then ? shall we sin (5692 ), because we are (5748 ) not under the law , but under grace ? God forbid (5636 ). * Know ye (5758 ) not , that to whom ye yield (5719 ) yourselves servants to obey , his servants ye are (5748 ) to whom ye obey (5719 ); whether of sin unto death , or of obedience unto righteousness ? * But God be thanked , that ye were (5713 ) the servants of sin , but ye have obeyed (5656 ) from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you (5681 ). * Being then made free (5685 ) from sin , ye became the servants (5681 ) of righteousness . * I speak (5719 ) after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh : for as ye have yielded (5656 ) your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity ; even so now yield (5657 ) your members servants to righteousness unto holiness . * For when ye were (5713 ) the servants of sin , ye were (5713 ) free from righteousness . * What fruit had ye (5707 ) then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed (5736 )? for the end of those things is death . * But now being made free (5685 ) from sin , and become servants (5685 ) to God , ye have (5719 ) your fruit unto holiness , and the end everlasting life . * For the wages of sin is death ; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord . * Know ye not (5719 ), brethren , (for I speak (5719 ) to them that know (5723 ) the law ,) how that the law hath dominion over (5719 ) a man as long as he liveth (5719 )? * For the woman which hath an husband is bound (5769 ) by the law to her husband so long as he liveth (5723 ); but if the husband be dead (5632 ), she is loosed (5769 ) from the law of her husband . * So then if , while her husband liveth (5723 ), she be married (5638 ) to another man , she shall be called (5692 ) an adulteress : but if her husband be dead (5632 ), she is (5748 ) free from that law ; so that she is (5750 ) no adulteress , though she be married (5637 ) to another man . * Wherefore , my brethren , ye also are become dead (5681 ) to the law by the body of Christ ; that ye should be married (5635 ) to another , even to him who is raised (5685 ) from the dead , that we should bring forth fruit (5661 ) unto God . * For when we were (5713 ) in the flesh , the motions of sins , which were by the law , did work (5710 ) in our members to bring forth fruit (5658 ) unto death . * But now we are delivered (5681 ) from the law , that being dead (5631 ) (5625 ) (5631 ) wherein we were held (5712 ); that we should serve (5721 ) in newness of spirit , and not in the oldness of the letter . * What shall we say (5692 ) then ? Is the law sin ? God forbid (5636 ). Nay , I had not known (5627 ) sin , but by the law : for I had not known (5715 ) lust , except the law had said (5707 ), Thou shalt not covet (5692 ). * But sin , taking (5631 ) occasion by the commandment , wrought (5662 ) in me all manner of concupiscence . For without the law sin was dead . * For I was alive (5707 ) without the law once : but when the commandment came (5631 ), sin revived (5656 ), and I died (5627 ). * And the commandment , which was ordained to life , I found (5681 ) to be unto death . * For sin , taking (5631 ) occasion by the commandment , deceived (5656 ) me , and by it slew (5656 ) me . * Wherefore the law is holy , and the commandment holy , and just , and good . * Was then that which is good made (5754 ) death unto me ? God forbid (5636 ). But sin , that it might appear (5652 ) sin , working (5740 ) death in me by that which is good ; that sin by the commandment might become (5638 ) exceeding sinful . * For we know (5758 ) that the law is (5748 ) spiritual : but I am (5748 ) carnal , sold (5772 ) under sin . * For that which I do (5736 ) I allow (5719 ) not : for what I would (5719 ), that do I (5719 ) not ; but what I hate (5719 ), that do I (5719 ). * If then I do (5719 ) that which I would (5719 ) not , I consent (5748 ) unto the law that it is good . * Now then it is no more I that do (5736 ) it , but sin that dwelleth (5723 ) in me . * For I know (5758 ) that in me (that is (5748 ), in my flesh ,) dwelleth (5719 ) no good thing : for to will (5721 ) is present (5736 ) with me ; but how to perform (5738 ) that which is good I find (5719 ) not . * For the good that I would (5719 ) I do (5719 ) not : but the evil which I would (5719 ) not , that I do (5719 ). * Now if I do (5719 ) that I would (5719 ) not , it is no more I that do (5736 ) it , but sin that dwelleth (5723 ) in me . * I find (5719 ) then a law , that , when I would (5723 ) do (5721 ) good , evil is present (5736 ) with me . * For I delight (5736 ) in the law of God after the inward man : * But I see (5719 ) another law in my members , warring against (5740 ) the law of my mind , and bringing me into captivity (5723 ) to the law of sin which is (5752 ) in my members . * O wretched man that I am ! who shall deliver (5695 ) me from the body of this death ? * I thank (5719 ) God through Jess Christ our Lord . So then with the mind I myself serve (5719 ) the law of God ; but with the flesh the law of sin . * There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus , who walk (5723 ) not after the flesh , but after the Spirit .
