mhcc@Joshua:7 @ ****** Joshua 7 ****** *** Outline of Joshua 7 *** The Israelites smitten at Ai. (_1-5.) Joshua's humiliation and prayer. (_6-9.) God instructs Joshua what to do. (_10-5.) Achan is detected, He is destroyed. (_16-26.) *** Commentary ***

mhcc@1Samuel:4:1-9 @ Verse 1-9 - Israel is smitten before the Philistines. Sin, the accursed thing, was in the camp, and gave their enemies all the advantage they could wish for. They own the hand of God in their trouble; but, instead of submitting, they speak angrily, as not aware of any just provocation they had given him. The foolishness of man perverts his way, and then his heart frets against the Lord, Proverbs strkjv@19:3,. and finds fault with him. They supposed that they could oblige God to appear for them, by bringing the ark into their camp. Those who have gone back in the life of religion, sometimes discover great fondness for the outward observances of it, as if those would save them; and as if the ark, God's throne, in the camp, would bring them to heaven, though the world and the flesh are on the throne in the heart.

mhcc@1Samuel:5 @ Henry'_1__4 ****** 1st Samuel 5 ****** *** Outline of 1st Samuel 5 *** Dagon is broken before the ark. (_1-5.) The Philistine smitten. (_6-12.) *** Commentary ***

mhcc@1Samuel:6 @ Henry'_1__5 ****** 1st Samuel 6 ****** *** Outline of 1st Samuel 6 *** The Philistines consult how to send back the ark. (_1-9.) They bring it to Bethshemesh. (_10-18.) The people smitten for looking into the ark. (_19-21.) *** Commentary ***

mhcc@1Samuel:6:19-21 @ Verse 19-21 - It is a great affront to God, for vain men to pry into, and meddle with the secret things which belong not to them, Deuteronomy strkjv@29:29. Colossians strkjv@2:18. Man was ruined by desiring forbidden knowledge. God will not suffer his ark to be profaned. Be not deceived, God is not mocked. Those that will not fear his goodness, and reverently use the tokens of his grace, shall be made to feel his justice. The number smitten is expressed in an unusual manner in the original, and it is probable that it means 1170. They desire to be rid of the ark. Foolish men run from one extreme to the other. They should rather have asked, How may we have peace with God, and recover his favor? Micah strkjv@6:6,7. Thus, when the word of God works with terror on sinners' consciences, they, instead of taking the blame and shame to themselves, quarrel with the word, and put that from them. Many stifle their convictions, and put salvation away from them. Henry'_1__7 **** Matthew Henry's Commentary **** _

mhcc@2Samuel:6 @ Henry'_2__5 ****** 2nd Samuel 6 ****** *** Outline of 2nd Samuel 6 *** The ark removed from Kirjath-jearim. (_1-5.) Uzzah smitten for touching the ark, Obed-edom blessed. (_6-11.) David brings the ark to Zion. (_12-19.) Michal's ill conduct. (_20-23.) *** Commentary ***

mhcc@2Samuel:18:1-8 @ Verse 1-8 - How does David render good for evil! Absalom would have only David smitten; David would have only Absalom spared. This seems to be a resemblance of man's wickedness towards God, and God's mercy to man, of which it is hard to say which is most amazing. Now the Israelites see what it is to take counsel against the Lord and his anointed.
