The accusative and the participle is a regular idiom for indirect discourse with this verb (Robertson, _Grammar_, pp. 1040-2). Three picturesque present participles, the first a general description, \peripatountas atakts\, the other two specifying with a vivid word-play, {that work not at all, but are busy-bodies} (\mden ergazomenous alla periergazomenous\). Literally, {doing nothing but doing around}. Ellicott suggests, {doing no business but being busy bodies}. "The first persecution at Thessalonica had been fostered by a number of fanatical loungers (Acts:17:5|)" (Moffatt). These theological dead-beats were too pious to work, but perfectly willing to eat at the hands of their neighbours while they piddled and frittered away the time in idleness.

Present active infinitive of \sunimi\, to send (put) together, to grasp, to comprehend, in indirect discourse with the accusative of general reference. {By his hand was giving them deliverance} (\dia cheiros autou didsin sotrian autois\). Picturesque use of "hand" as in strkjv@2:23|, present active indicative of \didmi\ retained in indirect discourse after imperfect \enomizen\. But they understood not (\hoi de ou sunkan\). Page notes "the rhetorical power of these words" from Stephen. \Sunkan\ (first aorist indicative, \k\ aorist) refers to \sunienai\ just before.

Old word from \dmios\ (public) and \ergon\, a worker for the public, artisan, framer, here only in N.T.

It has "always" (\pantote\) been so. {Which standeth around} (\ton periestta\). Second perfect active (intransitive) articular participle of \periistmi\. It was a picturesque and perilous scene. {That they may believe} (\hina pisteussin\). Purpose clause with \hina\ and first ingressive aorist active subjunctive of \pisteu\, "that they may come to believe." {That thou didst send me} (\hoti su me apesteilas\). First aorist active indicative of \apostell\ and note position of \su me\ side by side. This claim Jesus had long ago made (5:36|) and had repeatedly urged (10:25,38|). Here was a supreme opportunity and Jesus opens his heart about it.

It took place when "we died to sin" (verse 1|). {The body of sin} (\to sma ts hamartias\). "The body of which sin has taken possession" (Sanday and Headlam), the body marked by sin. {That so we should no longer be in bondage to sin} (\tou mketi douleuein hmas ti hamartii\). Purpose clause with \tou\ and the present active infinitive of \douleu\, continue serving sin (as slaves). Adds "slavery" to living in sin (verse 2|).
