GAMALIEL - G>@ - (recompense of God). Son of Pedahzur; prince or captain of the tribe of Manasseh at the census at Sinai, kjv@Numbers:1:10 kjv@Numbers:20:20 kjv@Numbers:7:54 -59) and at starting on the march through the wilderness. ch. kjv@Numbers:10:23) (B.C. 1490.) A pharisee and celebrated doctor of the law, who gave prudent worldly advice in the Sanhedrin respecting the treatment of the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. kjv@Acts:5:34) ff. (A.D. 29.) We learn from kjv@Acts:22:3) that he was the preceptor of St. Paul. He is generally identified with the very celebrated Jewish doctor Gamaliel, grandson of Hillel, and who is referred to as authority in the Jewish Mishna.

GAMES - G>@ - Among the Greeks the rage for theatrical exhibitions was such that every city of any size possessed its theatre and stadium. At Ephesus an annual contest was held in honor of Diana. It is probable that St. Paul was present when these games were proceeding. A direct reference to the exhibitions that I took place on such occasions is made in ( kjv@1Corinthians:15:32) St. Paul’s epistles abound with allusions to the Greek contests, borrowed probably from the Isthmian games, at which he may well have been present during his first visit to Corinth. These contests, ( kjv@1Timothy:6:12; kjv@2Timothy:4:7) were divided into two classes, the pancratium , consisting of boxing and wrestling, and the pentathlon , consisting of leaping, running, quoiting, hurling the spear and wrestling. The competitors, ( kjv@1Corinthians:9:25; kjv@2Timothy:2:5) required a long and severe course of previous training, ( kjv@1Timothy:4:8) during which a particular diet was enforced. ( kjv@1Corinthians:9:25-27) In the Olympic contests these preparatory exercises extended over a period of ten months, during the last of which they were conducted under the supervision of appointed officers. The contests took place in the presence of a vast multitude of spectators, kjv@Hebrews:12:1) the competitors being the spectacle. ( kjv@1Corinthians:4:9; kjv@Hebrews:10:33) The games were opened by the proclamation of a herald, ( kjv@1Corinthians:9:27) whose office it was to give out the name and country of each candidate, and especially to announce the name of the victor before the assembled multitude. The judge was selected for his spotless integrity; ( kjv@2Timothy:4:8) his office was to decide any disputes, kjv@Colossians:3:15) and to give the prize, ( kjv@1Corinthians:9:24; kjv@Philemon:3:14) consisting of a crown, ( kjv@2Timothy:2:6 kjv@2Timothy:4:8) of leaves of wild olive at the Olympic games, and of pine, or at one period ivy, at the Isthmian games. St. Paul alludes to two only out of the five contests, boxing and running, more frequently to the latter. The Jews had no public games, the great feasts of religion supplying them with anniversary occasions of national gatherings.

GAMMADIM - G>@ - This word occurs only in kjv@Ezekiel:27:11) A variety of explanations of the term have been offered. One class renders it "pygmies." A second treats it as a geographical or local term. A third gives a more general sense to the word "brave warriors." Hitzig suggests "deserters." After all, the rendering in the LXX.
"guards"
furnishes the simplest explanation.

GAMUL - G>@ - (weaned), a priest, the leader of the twenty-second course in the service at the sanctuary. ( kjv@1Chronicles:24:17) (B.C. 535.)

easton:

Gamaliel @ reward of God.

(1.) A chief of the tribe of Manasseh at the census at Sinai kjv@Numbers:1:10 kjv@Numbers:2:20 kjv@Numbers:7:54 -59).

(2.) The son of rabbi Simeon, and grandson of the famous rabbi Hillel. He was a Pharisse, and therefore the opponent of the party of the Sadducees. He was noted for his learning, and was president of the Sanhedrim during the regins of Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius, and died, it is said, about eighteen years before the destruction of Jerusalem. When the apostles were brought before the council, charged with preaching the resurrection of Jesus, as a zealous Pharisee Gamaliel councelled moderation and calmness. By a reference to well-known events, he advised them to "refrain from these men." If their work or counsel was of man, it would come to nothing; but if it was of God, they could not destroy it, and therefore ought to be on their guard lest they should be "found fighting against God" kjv@Acts:5:34-40). Paul was one of his disciples (22:3).

Games @

(1.) Of children kjv@Zechariah:8:5; kjv@Matthew:11:16). The Jewish youth were also apparently instructed in the use of the bow and the sling kjv@Judges:20:16; kjv@1Chronicles:12:2).

(2.) Public games, such as were common among the Greeks and Romans, were foreign to the Jewish institutions and customs. Reference, however, is made to such games in two passages kjv@Psalms:19:5; kjv@Ecclesiastes:9:11).

(3.) Among the Greeks and Romans games entered largely into their social life. (a) Reference in the New Testament is made to gladiatorial shows and fights with wild beasts ( kjv@1Corinthians:15:32). These were common among the Romans, and sometimes on a large scale. (b) Allusion is frequently made to the Grecian gymnastic contests kjv@Galatians:2:2 kjv@Galatians:5:7; kjv@Philippians:2:16 kjv@Philippians:3:14; kjv@1Timothy:6:12; kjv@2Timothy:2:5; kjv@Hebrews:12:1 kjv@Hebrews:12:4, 12). These were very numerous. The Olympic, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian games were esteemed as of great national importance, and the victors at any of these games of wrestling, racing, etc., were esteemed as the noblest and the happiest of mortals.

Gammadim @ kjv@Ezekiel:27:11) brave warriors; R.V. marg., "valorous men;" others interpret this word as meaning "short-swordsmen," or "daring ones", the name of a class of men who were defenders of the towers of Tyre.

Gamul @ weaned the leader of one of the priestly courses ( kjv@1Chronicles:24:17).
