LEECH - L>@ - [HORSE

- LEECH]

LEEKS - L>@ - (Heb. chatsir). The leek was a bulbous vegetable resembling the onion. Its botanical name is Allium porrum. The Israelites in the wilderness longed for the leeks and onions of Egypt. kjv@Numbers:11:5) The word chatsir , which in kjv@Numbers:11:5) is translated leeks , occurs twenty times in the Hebrew text. The Hebrew term, which properly denotes grass , is derived from a root signifying "to be green," and may therefore stand in this passage for any green food
lettuce, endive, etc.; it would thus be applied somewhat in the same manner as we use the term "greens;" yet as the chatsir is mentioned together with onions and garlic in the text, and as the most ancient versions unanimously understand leeks by the Hebrew word, we may be satisfied with our own translation.

LEES - L>@ - the coarser parts of a liquor, its sediment or dregs. "Wine on the lees" means a generous, full-bodied liquor. kjv@Isaiah:25:6) Before the wine was consumed, it was necessary to strain off the lees; such wine was then termed "well refined." kjv@Isaiah:25:6) To drink the lees, or "dregs," was an expression for the endurance of extreme punishment. kjv@Psalms:75:8)

easton:

Leek @ (Heb. hatsir; the Allium porrum), rendered "grass" in kjvKings:18:5, kjv@2Kings:19:26, kjv@Job:40:15, etc.; "herb" in kjv@Job:8:12; "hay" in kjv@Proverbs:27:25, and kjv@Isaiah:15:6; "leeks" only in kjv@Numbers:11:5. This Hebrew word seems to denote in this last passage simply herbs, such as lettuce or savoury herbs cooked as kitchen vegetables, and not necessarily what are now called leeks. The leek was a favourite vegetable in Egypt, and is still largely cultivated there and in Palestine.

Lees @ (Heb. shemarim), from a word meaning to keep or preserve. It was applied to "lees" from the custom of allowing wine to stand on the lees that it might thereby be better preserved kjv@Isaiah:25:6). "Men settled on their lees" kjv@Zephaniah:1:12) are men "hardened or crusted." The image is derived from the crust formed at the bottom of wines long left undisturbed kjv@Jeremiah:48:11). The effect of wealthy undisturbed ease on the ungodly is hardening. They become stupidly secure (comp. kjv@Psalms:55:19; kjv@Amos:6:1). To drink the lees kjv@Psalms:75:8) denotes severe suffering.
