FIR - F>@ - kjv@Isaiah:14:8; kjv@Ezekiel:27:5) etc. As the term "cedar" is in all probability applicable to more than one tree, so also "fir" in the Authorized Version represents probably one or other of the following trees: Pinus sylvestris , or Scotch fir; Larch; Cupressus sempervirens , or cypress, all which are at this day found in the Lebanon. The wood of the fir was used for ship-building, kjv@Ezekiel:27:5) for musical instruments, (2 Samuel kjv@6:5) for beams and rafters of houses, (Kings:5:8-10; kjv@2Chronicles:2:8) It was a tall evergreen tree of vigorous growth.

FIRE - F>@ - is represented as the symbol of Jehovah’s presence and the instrument of his power, in the way either of approval or of destruction. kjv@Exodus:3:2 kjv@Exodus:14:19) etc. There could not be a better symbol for Jehovah than this of fire, it being immaterial, mysterious, but visible, warming, cheering, comforting, but also terrible and consuming. Parallel with this application of fire and with its symbolical meaning are to be noted the similar use for sacrificial purposes and the respect paid to it, or to the heavenly bodies as symbols of deity, which prevailed among so many nations of antiquity, and of which the traces are not even now extinct; e.g. the Sabean and Magian systems of worship. kjv@Isaiah:27:9) Fire for sacred purposes obtained elsewhere than from the altar was called "strange fire," and for the use of such Nadab and Abihu were punished with death by fire from God. kjv@Leviticus:10:1-2; kjv@Numbers:3:4 kjv@Numbers:26:61)

FIREPAN - F>@ - one of the vessels of the temple service. kjv@Exodus:27:3 kjv@Exodus:38:3; kjv@2Kings:25:15; kjv@Jeremiah:52:19) The same word is elsewhere rendered "snuff-dish," kjv@Exodus:25:38 kjv@Exodus:37:23; kjv@Numbers:4:9) and "censer." kjv@Leviticus:10:1 kjv@Leviticus:16:12; kjv@Numbers:16:6) ff. There appear, therefore, to have been two articles so called: one, like a chafing-dish, to carry live coals for the purpose of burning incense; another, like a snuffer-dish, to be used in trimming the lamps, in order to carry the snuffers and convey away the snuff.

FIRKIN - F>@ - WEIGHTS AND MEASURES AND MEASURES

FIRMAMENT - F>@ - In Scripture the word denotes an expanse, a wide extent; for such is the signification of the Hebrew word. The original, therefore, does not convey the sense of solidity, but of stretching, extension; the great arch of expanse over our heads, in which are placed the atmosphere and the clouds, and in which the stars appear to be placed, and are really seen.
Webster.

FIRSTBORN - F>@ - Under the law, in memory of the exodus (when the first-born of the Egyptians were slain), the eldest son was regarded as devoted to God, and was in very case to be redeemed by an offering not exceeding five shekels, within one month from birth. If he died before the expiration of thirty days, the Jewish doctors held the father excused, but liable to the payment if he outlived that time. kjv@Exodus:13:12-15-16; kjv@Leviticus:27:6) The eldest son received a double portion of the father’s inheritance, (21:17) but not of the mother’s. Under the monarchy the eldest son usually, but no always, as appears in the case of Solomon, succeeded his father in the kingdom. (Kings:1:30; kjv@2:22) The male first-born of animals was also devoted to God. kjv@Exodus:13:2 kjv@Exodus:13:12-13 kjv@Exodus:22:29 kjv@Exodus:34:19 -20) Unclean animals were to be redeemed with the addition of one-fifth of the value, or else put to death; or, if not redeemed, to be sold, and the price given to the priests. kjv@Leviticus:27:13 kjv@Leviticus:27:27-28)

FIRSTFRUITS - F>@ - The law ordered in general that the first of all ripe fruits and of liquors, or, as it is twice expressed, the first of first-fruits, should be offered in God’s house. kjv@Exodus:22:29 kjv@Exodus:23:19 kjv@Exodus:34:27 ) It was an act of allegiance to God as the giver of all. No exact quantity was commanded, but it was left to the spiritual and moral sense of each individual. On the morrow after the passover sabbath, i.e. on the 16th of Nisan, a sheaf of new corn was to be brought to the priest and waved before the altar, in acknowledgment of the gift of fruitfulness. kjv@Leviticus:2:12 kjv@Leviticus:23:5-6 kjv@Leviticus:23:10-12) At the expiration of seven weeks from this time, i.e. at the feast of pentecost, an oblation was to be made from the new flour, which were to be waved in like manner with the passover sheaf. kjv@Exodus:34:22; kjv@Leviticus:23:15-17; kjv@Numbers:28:26) The feast of ingathering, i.e. the feast of tabernacles, in the seventh month, was itself an acknowledgment of the fruits of the harvest. kjv@Exodus:23:16 kjv@Exodus:34:22; kjv@Leviticus:23:39) These four sorts of offerings were national. Besides them, the two following were of an individual kind. A cake of the first dough that was baked was to be offered as a heave-offering. kjv@Numbers:15:19-21) The first-fruits of the land were to be brought in a basket to the holy place of God’s choice, and there presented to the priest, who was to set the basket down before the altar. (26:2-11) The offerings were the perquisite of the priests. kjv@Numbers:18:11 kjv@Numbers:18:4) Nehemiah, at the return from captivity, took pains to reorganize the offerings of first-fruits of both kinds, and to appoint places to receive them. kjv@Nehemiah:10:35-37 kjv@Nehemiah:12:44) An offering of first-fruits is mentioned as an acceptable one to the prophet Elisha. ( kjv@2Kings:4:42)

Fir @ the uniform rendering in the Authorized Version (marg. R.V., "cypress") of berosh ( kjv@2Samuel:6:5; kjvKings:5:8-10; 6:15,34; kjv@9:11, etc.), a lofty tree kjv@Isaiah:55:13) growing on Lebanon (37:24). Its wood was used in making musical instruments and doors of houses, and for ceilings ( kjv@2Chronicals:3:5), the decks of ships kjv@Ezekiel:27:5), floorings and spear-shafts kjv@Nahum:2:3, R.V.). The true fir (abies) is not found in Palestine, but the pine tree, of which there are four species, is common. The precise kind of tree meant by the "green fir tree" kjv@Hosea:14:8) is uncertain. Some regard it as the sherbin tree, a cypress resembling the cedar; others, the Aleppo or maritime pine (Pinus halepensis), which resembles the Scotch fir; while others think that the "stone-pine" (Pinus pinea) is probably meant. (
See PINE.)

Fire @

(1.) For sacred purposes. The sacrifices were consumed by fire kjv@Genesis:8:20). The ever-burning fire on the altar was first kindled from heaven kjv@Leviticus:6:9 kjv@Leviticus:6:13 kjv@Leviticus:9:24), and afterwards rekindled at the dedication of Solomon's temple ( kjv@2Chronicals:7:1-3). The expressions "fire from heaven" and "fire of the Lord" generally denote lightning, but sometimes also the fire of the altar was so called kjv@Exodus:29:18; kjv@Leviticus:1:9 kjv@Leviticus:2:3 kjv@Leviticus:3:5 ,9). Fire for a sacred purpose obtained otherwise than from the altar was called "strange fire" kjv@Leviticus:10:1-2; kjv@Numbers:3:4). The victims slain for sin offerings were afterwards consumed by fire outside the camp kjv@Leviticus:4:12 kjv@Leviticus:4:21 kjv@Leviticus:6:30 kjv@Leviticus:16:27 ; kjv@Hebrews:13:11).

(2.) For domestic purposes, such as baking, cooking, warmth, etc. kjv@Jeremiah:36:22; kjv@Mark:14:54; kjv@John:18:18). But on Sabbath no fire for any domestic purpose was to be kindled kjv@Exodus:35:3; kjv@Numbers:15:32-36).

(3.) Punishment of death by fire was inflicted on such as were guilty of certain forms of unchastity and incest kjv@Leviticus:20:14 kjv@Leviticus:21:9). The burning of captives in war was not unknown among the Jews ( kjv@2Samuel:12:31; kjv@Jeremiah:29:22). The bodies of infamous persons who were executed were also sometimes burned kjv@Joshua:7:25; kjv@2Kings:23:16).

(4.) In war, fire was used in the destruction of cities, as Jericho kjv@Joshua:6:24), Ai (8:19), Hazor (11:11), Laish kjv@Judges:18:27), etc. The war-chariots of the Canaanites were burnt kjv@Joshua:11:6 kjv@Joshua:11:9, 13). The Israelites burned the images ( kjv@2Kings:10:26; R.V., "pillars") of the house of Baal. These objects of worship seem to have been of the nature of obelisks, and were sometimes evidently made of wood. Torches were sometimes carried by the soldiers in battle kjv@Judges:7:16).

(5.) Figuratively, fire is a symbol of Jehovah's presence and the instrument of his power kjv@Exodus:14:19; kjv@Numbers:11:1-3; kjv@Judges:13:20; kjvKings:18:38; kjv@2Kings:1:10-12 kjv@2Kings:2:11; kjv@Isaiah:6:4; kjv@Ezekiel:1:4; kjv@Revelation:1:14, etc.). God's word is also likened unto fire kjv@Jeremiah:23:29). It is referred to as an emblem of severe trials or misfortunes kjv@Zechariah:12:6; kjv@Luke:12:49; kjv@1Corinthians:3:13-15; kjv@1Peter:1:7), and of eternal punishment kjv@Matthew:5:22; kjv@Mark:9:44; kjv@Revelation:14:10 kjv@Revelation:21:8). The influence of the Holy Ghost is likened unto fire kjv@Matthew:3:11). His descent was denoted by the appearance of tongues as of fire kjv@Acts:2:3).

Firebrand @Isaiah:7:4, kjv@Amos:4:11, kjv@Zechariah:3:2, denotes the burnt end of a stick (Heb. 'ud); in kjv@Judges:15:4, a lamp or torch, a flambeau (Heb. lappid); in kjv@Proverbs:26:18 (comp. kjv@Ephesians:6:16), burning darts or arrows (Heb. zikkim).

Firepan @ kjv@Exodus:27:3 kjv@Exodus:38:3), one of the vessels of the temple service (rendered "snuff-dish" kjv@Exodus:25:38 kjv@Exodus:37:23; and "censer" kjv@Leviticus:10:1 kjv@Leviticus:16:12). It was probably a metallic cinder-basin used for the purpose of carrying live coal for burning incense, and of carrying away the snuff in trimming the lamps.

Firkin @ Used only in kjv@John:2:6; the Attic amphora, equivalent to the Hebrew bath (q.v.), a measure for liquids containing about 8 7/8 gallons.

Firmament @ from the Vulgate firmamentum, which is used as the translation of the Hebrew raki'a. This word means simply "expansion." It denotes the space or expanse like an arch appearing immediately above us. They who rendered raki'a by firmamentum regarded it as a solid body. The language of Scripture is not scientific but popular, and hence we read of the sun rising and setting, and also here the use of this particular word. It is plain that it was used to denote solidity as well as expansion. It formed a division between the waters above and the waters below kjv@Genesis:1:7). The raki'a supported the upper reservoir kjv@Psalms:148:4). It was the support also of the heavenly bodies kjv@Genesis:1:14), and is spoken of as having "windows" and "doors" kjv@Genesis:7:11; kjv@Isaiah:24:18; kjv@Malachi:3:10) through which the rain and snow might descend.

First-born @ sons enjoyed certain special privileges kjv@Deuteronomy:21:17; kjv@Genesis:25:23 kjv@Genesis:25:31, 34; 49:3; kjv@1Chronicles:5:1; kjv@Hebrews:12:16; kjv@Psalms:89:27). (
See BIRTHRIGHT.) The "first-born of the poor" signifies the most miserable of the poor kjv@Isaiah:14:30). The "church of the first-born" signifies the church of the redeemed. The destruction of the first-born was the last of the ten plagues inflicted on the Egyptians kjv@Exodus:11:1-8 kjv@Exodus:12:29-30). Menephtah is probably the Pharaoh whose first-born was slain. His son did not succeed or survive his father, but died early. The son's tomb has been found at Thebes unfinished, showing it was needed earlier than was expected. Some of the records on the tomb are as follows: "The son whom Menephtah loves; who draws towards him his father's heart, the singer, the prince of archers, who governed Egypt on behalf of his father. Dead."

First-born, Redemption of @ From the beginning the office of the priesthood in each family belonged to the eldest son. But when the extensive plan of sacrificial worship was introduced, requiring a company of men to be exclusively devoted to this ministry, the primitive office of the first-born was superseded by that of the Levites kjv@Numbers:3:11-13), and it was ordained that the first-born of man and of unclean animals should henceforth be redeemed (18:15). The laws concerning this redemption of the first-born of man are recorded in kjv@Exodus:13:12-15 kjv@Exodus:22:29 kjv@Exodus:34:20 ; kjv@Numbers:3:45 kjv@Numbers:8:17 kjv@Numbers:18:16 ; kjv@Leviticus:12:2-4. The first-born male of every clean animal was to be given up to the priest for sacrifice kjv@Deuteronomy:12:6; kjv@Exodus:13:12 kjv@Exodus:34:20; kjv@Numbers:18:15-17). But the first-born of unclean animals was either to be redeemed or sold and the price given to the priest kjv@Leviticus:27:11-13, 27). The first-born of an ass, if not redeemed, was to be put to death kjv@Exodus:13:13 kjv@Exodus:34:20).

First-born, Sanctification of the @ A peculiar sanctity was attached to the first-born both of man and of cattle. God claimed that the first-born males of man and of animals should be consecrated to him, the one as a priest kjv@Exodus:19:22-24), representing the family to which he belonged, and the other to be offered up in sacrifice kjv@Genesis:4:4).

First-fruits @ The first-fruits of the ground were offered unto God just as the first-born of man and animals. The law required,

(1.) That on the morrow after the Passover Sabbath a sheaf of new corn should be waved by the priest before the altar kjv@Leviticus:23:5-6, 10, 12; 2:12).

(2.) That at the feast of Pentecost two loaves of leavened bread, made from the new flour, were to be waved in like manner kjv@Leviticus:23:15-17; kjv@Numbers:28:26).

(3.) The feast of Tabernacles was an acknowledgement that the fruits of the harvest were from the Lord kjv@Exodus:23:16 kjv@Exodus:34:22).

(4.) Every individual, besides, was required to consecrate to God a portion of the first-fruits of the land kjv@Exodus:22:29 kjv@Exodus:23:19 kjv@Exodus:34:26 ; kjv@Numbers:15:20-21).

(5.) The law enjoined that no fruit was to be gathered from newly-planted fruit-trees for the first three years, and that the first-fruits of the fourth year were to be consecrated to the Lord kjv@Leviticus:19:23-25). Jeremiah (2:3) alludes to the ordinance of "first-fruits," and hence he must have been acquainted with the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, where the laws regarding it are recorded.
