Fear of the Lord the @ is in the Old Testament used as a designation of true piety kjv@Proverbs:1:7; kjv@Job:28:28; kjv@Psalms:19:9). It is a fear conjoined with love and hope, and is therefore not a slavish dread, but rather filial reverence. (Comp. kjv@Deuteronomy:32:6; kjv@Hosea:11:1; kjv@Isaiah:1:2 kjv@Isaiah:63:16 kjv@Isaiah:64:8 .) God is called "the Fear of Isaac" kjv@Genesis:31:42 kjv@Genesis:31:53), i.e., the God whom Isaac feared. A holy fear is enjoined also in the New Testament as a preventive of carelessness in religion, and as an incentive to penitence kjv@Matthew:10:28; kjv@2Corinthians:5:11 kjv@2Corinthians:7:1; kjv@Philippians:2:12; kjv@Ephesians:5:21; kjv@Hebrews:12:28-29).
