NATHAN - N>@ - (a giver). An eminent Hebrew prophet in the reigns of David and Solomon. (B.C. 1015.) He first appears in the consultation with David about the building of the temple. (2 Samuel 7:2-3,17) He next comes forward as the reprover of David for the sin with Bathsheba; and his famous apologue on the rich man and the ewe lamb, which is the only direct example of his prophetic power, shows it to have been of a very high order. (2 Samuel 12:1-12) A son of David; one of the four who were borne to him by Bathsheba. ( kjv@1Chronicles:3:5) comp, 1Chr 14:4 and 2Sam 5:14 Son or brother of one of the members of David’s guard. (2 Samuel 23:36; kjv@1Chronicles:11:38) One of the head men who returned from Babylon with Ezra on his second expedition. kjv@Ezra:8:16) 1 Esdr. kjv@8:44. It is not impossible that he may be the same with the "son of Bani." kjv@Ezra:10:39)

NATHANAEL - N>@ - (gift of God), a disciple of Jesus Christ, concerning whom, under that name at least, we learn from Scripture little more than his birthplace, Cana of Galilee, kjv@John:21:2) and his simple, truthful character. kjv@John:1:47) The name does not occur in the first three Gospels; but it is commonly believed that Nathanael and Bartholomew are the same person. The evidence for that belief is as follows: St, John who twice mentions Nathanael, never introduces the name of Bartholomew at all. St. Matthew, kjv@Matthew:10:3) St. Mark, kjv@Mark:3:18) and St. Luke, kjv@Luke:8:14) all speak of Bartholomew but never of Nathanael. If was Philip who first brought Nathanael to Jesus, just as Andrew had brought his brother Simon.

NATHANMELECH - N>@ - (the gift of the king), a eunuch (Authorized Version "chamberlain") in the court of Josiah. ( kjv@2Kings:23:11) (B.C. 628.)

Nathan @ given.

(1.) A prophet in the reigns of David and Solomon ( kjv@2Chronicals:9:29). He is first spoken of in connection with the arrangements David made for the building of the temple ( kjv@2Samuel:7:2-3, 17), and next appears as the reprover of David on account of his sin with Bathsheba (12:1-14). He was charged with the education of Solomon (12:25), at whose inauguration to the throne he took a prominent part (kjvKings:1:8-10, 11, 22-45). His two sons, Zabad ( kjv@1Chronicles:2:36) and Azariah (kjvKings:4:5) occupied places of honour at the king's court. He last appears in assisting David in reorganizing the public worship ( kjv@2Chronicals:29:25). He seems to have written a life of David, and also a life of Solomon ( kjv@1Chronicles:29:29; kjv@2Chronicals:9:29).

(2.) A son of David, by Bathsheba ( kjv@2Samuel:5:14), whose name appears in the genealogy of Mary, the mother of our Lord kjv@Luke:3:31).

(3.) kjv@Ezra:8:16.

Nathanael @ given or gift of God, one of our Lord's disciples, "of Cana in Galilee" kjv@John:21:2). He was "an Israelite indeed, in whom was no guile" (1:47-48). His name occurs only in the Gospel of John, who in his list of the disciples never mentions Bartholomew, with whom he has consequently been identified. He was one of those to whom the Lord showed himself alive after his resurrection, at the Sea of Tiberias.
