Why - Calvinism?

A case for the defense of Calvinism, why and from what, its importance to the theological discussions of this present age.

Author: Randy Pritts

In my previous two efforts in this series I have presented a reasonable case for the defense of the Protestant Reformation (ReformationWhy ) and specifically the "Reformed" protestant branch of the reformation (ReformedWhy ). If you have had a chance to yet, I urge you to read through these to introductory threads first to get a sense of the dynamics and terminology behind the advent of those two movements.

A few points that I would like to clarify before going any further into this present topic.

  1. As it should be, we must always insist that salvation is salvation no matter how any of us got to this, our personal relationship to Jesus Christ is a gift of unfathomable splendor and of prime importance. The issues we are about to discuss, though important to understanding the inner-workings of salvation and faith, are not issues that should divide us from the single-minded purpose of living in a glorifying/fruitful manner in Christ.

  2. Scripture is the all important final authority in any of our extracurricular determinations. Scripture is indeed infallible, however, interpretations are not. As we have seen in previous threads, we are all subject to personal and corporate and generational bias, we've attempted to remove ourselves from these in the past, we must continue to carry on these efforts moving forward to the best of our abilities, but there is no such thing as the "plain" or unadulterated biblical view on these secondary topics and issues.

  3. It is not my intention today to defend all the many variations of Calvinism existing, only that "Reformed" variation that I am most familiar with. There also different intensities shall I say of Calvinism, from soft to hyper, from reformed to neo. There are dispensational varieties, covenantal, methodist etc... Too many to do proper justice on with a introductory thread like mine here today.

God is God!

There is no need in this day and age to attempt to wrap our finite minds around the infinite mind of God. It can't be done. Why should we even try or bother? When all is thought of, said and done, God is still going to be God and we are going to be not. Yet here we are today trying!
