Today's Commentary Outline:

  1. "What is Man, that Thou art Mindful of Him?": 8:4
    • What is = Primary question of Psalm 8 - In the light of everything God is = that thou art. (Image of self in light of image of God) Let us consider:

      • "O LORD our Lord, how excellent (mighty/worthy) is thy name (honor/authority/character/fame/renown/report) in all the earth!" 8:1 8:9 (Name is more words. Christ shares same name as one)

kjv@Ephesians:1:21 @ Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

      • "Who hast set thy glory (grandeur/imposing form and appearance) above the heavens (ether)" 8:1 (Set before/after)

kjv@Exodus:24:17 @ And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.

kjv@1Kings:8:10 @ And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,

kjv@1Kings:8:11 @ So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

      • "When I consider (see) thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained (set)" 8:3

kjv@Job:38:1 @ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

kjv@Job:38:2 @ Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?

kjv@Job:38:3 @ Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.

kjv@Job:38:4 @ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

kjv@Job:38:5 @ Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

    kjv@Job:38:6 @ Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;

kjv@Job:38:7 @ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

kjv@Job:38:8 @ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

kjv@Job:38:9 @ When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

kjv@Job:38:10 @ And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

kjv@Job:38:11 @ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

    • "What is man (mortal), that thou art mindful (mark/recognize/remember) of him?" 8:4

    • "(What is) the son of man (human being (individual or species)), that thou visitest (visit (with friendly/hostile intent) oversee) him?" 8:4

      • Presently? A most sorted mess!

kjv@Job:15:15 @ Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

kjv@Job:15:16 @ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

kjv@Job:25:5 @ Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight.

kjv@Job:25:6 @ How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

      • (To require all that Christ had to accomplish at His visit?)

  2. Man's First Estate and Forward:
    • God + Order: "Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels" 8:5

    Quoted resource: strongs 'H430'

H430 @ אלהים 'ĕlôhîym el-o-heem' Plural of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but specifically used (in the plural {thus} especially with the article) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative: - {angels} X {exceeding} God (gods) ({-dess} {-ly}) X (very) {great} {judges} X mighty.

      • Common translation = God (#?) gods (#?) rulers (#?) or angels of God (3)

      • ASV/RSV/WEB = lower than God. Rotherham = messengers of God. gltv = lack a little from God. ylt = lack a little of Godhead.

      • Could be explained as "lower than" God/gods/rulers/angels (any/all) (man was made a "little" lower/in need of)

      • (Geneva notes: Concerning his first creation) What has man done since then? Sought to be gods in their own eyes.

    • God: "Crowned him with glory and honour" 8:5

    Quoted resource: strongs 'H3519'

    H3519 @ כּבד כּבוד kâbôd kâbôd {kaw-bode'} kaw-bode' From H3513; properly weight; but only figuratively in a good {sense} splendor or copiousness: - glorious ({-ly}) {glory} honour (-able).

    Quoted resource: strongs 'H1926'

    H1926 @ הדר hâdâr haw-dawr' From H1921; {magnificence} that {is} ornament or splendor: - {beauty} {comeliness} {excellency} {glorious} {glory} {goodly} {honour} majesty.

      • Picture = made lower (little) but with tremendous weight/significance given to him by God

      • Consider the opposite that we have made of this glory and honour. (Glory and honour we give to ourselves vs glory and honour that is God given).

    • God: "Thou madest him to have dominion (rule/reign/bear dict:strongs H4910 ) over the works of thy hands" 8:6

    Quoted resource: strongs 'H7287'

    H7287 @ רדה râdâh raw-daw' A primitive root; to tread {down} that {is} subjugate; specifically to crumble off: - (come {to} make to) have {dominion} prevail {against} {reign} ({bear} make to) {rule} ({-r} {over}) take.

kjv@Genesis:1:26 @ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

kjv@Genesis:1:27 @ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

      • Picture = God to have dominion over man/angels to minister to God

      • Picture = man made to be the keeper/stewards over earth for God.

      • Consider how opposite we have taken this dominion.

      • Consider that instead of allowing God dominion over us instead that role has been stolen away by the "power of the air"/"prince of darknes"

kjv@Ephesians:2:2 @ Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

kjv@Ephesians:2:3 @ Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

    • God: "Thou hast put all(?) things under his feet" 8:6

      • "All sheep and oxen" 8:7

      • "The beasts of the field" 8:7

      • "The fowl of the air" 8:8

      • "The fish of the sea" 8:8

      • "Whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas" 8:8

      • All of which currently show the stress of our rebellious sin nature (our rebellion has become a curse unto them)

    • Man's original design and estate given him by God was right along these lines of excellency/crowning/significance.

      • Where man's rebellion has taken this design and estate is nothing less than shameful and abominable.

kjv@Job:15:16 @ How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

      • And yet..... the question is now asked by the psalmist:

kjv@Psalms:8:4 @ What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

  3. Thou visitest him?" kjv@8:4:
    • Who visits? Christ (Son of God/Son of Man) (To become rightful intercessor/shepherd/deliverer/king)

    kjv@Hebrews:1:1-3 @ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

    • Visit in what form? (note: similarity of description of man but magnified)

kjv@Philippians:2:7 @ But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

kjv@Philippians:2:8 @ And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

kjv@Hebrews:2:9 @ But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

kjv@1Peter:1:20 @ Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

kjv@1Peter:1:21 @ Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

    • Glorified

kjv@John:13:31 @ Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

kjv@John:13:32 @ If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

kjv@Psalms:21:3 @ For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.

kjv@Psalms:21:4 @ He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.

kjv@Psalms:21:5 @ His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.

    • Above all principality

kjv@Philippians:2:9 @ Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

    kjv@Philippians:2:10 @ That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

kjv@Philippians:2:11 @ And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

      • There is the smaller scale dominion and principality given man over the earth.

      • There is the larger over arching dominion and principality over all creation rightfully belonging to God.

      • There is the dominion and principality deceitfully stolen away by Satan placed over all man.

      • There is the visitation of Christ in human form offering deliverance from God's impending judgment concerning this intollerable situation.

      • We begin to understand all of this but, one major question yet remains: Why would God have done this for man despite man's rebellious second estate?

    "Because of Thine Enemies...." kjv@Psalms:8:2

  4. "Because of Thine Enemies, That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger": 8:2
    • (Considering design/estate 1st + 2nd etc...) What now has God done?

      • "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings...Hast thou ordained strength" 8:2

kjv@Matthew:21:16 @ And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

    • How has HE done it?

      • "Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings" 8:2

      • The lowly/meek/hungry

      • The child like

      • The fool

kjv@1Corinthians:1:26 @ For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

    kjv@1Corinthians:1:27 @ But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

kjv@1Corinthians:1:28 @ And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

kjv@1Corinthians:1:29 @ That no flesh should glory in his presence.

    • Why has God done what he has?

      • "That thou mightest still: 8:2

      • "the enemy and the avenger" 8:2

    • Illustration babes and enemy/avenger

kjv@Matthew:21:13 @ And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

kjv@Matthew:21:14 @ And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

kjv@Matthew:21:15 @ And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,

kjv@Matthew:21:16 @ And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

      • Enemy/Avenger = those at emnity with Christ (carnal mind) (religious or not)

kjv@Romans:8:7 @ Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

      • Religion itself does not alter or mask essential carnal state.

      • Only the child like having seen the evidences of Christ are remotely able to recognise and acknowledge this. (Perfecting of praise)

    • Summary of visitation:

    kjv@Hebrews:2:14 @ Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

kjv@1Corinthians:15:24 @ Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:25 @ For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:26 @ The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:27 @ For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

  5. What is man, that thou art mindful of him?: 8:4
    • Made in Image of God

    • God's image forfeited that we might be gods in our own eyes

    • God did not give up on man/made a way to come back to HIM

    • Christ the way, truth and life

      • Tasted death in order to conquer death

kjv@1Corinthians:15:51 @ Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

kjv@1Corinthians:15:52 @ In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:53 @ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:54 @ So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:55 @ O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

kjv@1Corinthians:15:56 @ The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:57 @ But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:58 @ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

"O LORD our Lord, how excellent (mighty/worthy) is thy name (honor/authority/character/fame/renown/report) in all the earth!" 8:1 8:9
