Today's Audio Commentary: "Now Know I that the LORD Saveth His Anointed"

Today's Commentary Outline: "Now Know I that the LORD Saveth His Anointed"
- "He will Hear Him from His Holy Heaven": :6
- We have a decision to make if we are to correctly consider today's 19: text: Who is the "annointed" being referred to in this psalm?
- It is obvious what is being expected of Jehovah in this "day of trouble"
- :1 that Jehovah hear the anointed, that Jehovah defend the anointed.
- :2 that Jehovah send help and strengthen the anointed.
- :3 that Jehovah remember/accept the anointed's offerings and burnt sacrifice.
- :4 that Jehovah grant the anointed according to the anointed's heart and fulfill the anointed's counsel.
- :5 that Jehovah will fulfill all of the anointed's petitions.
- :6 that Jehovah will hear the anointed from Jehovah's holy heaven.
- Who then is this person being identified as the anointed? (you or me or us? David? Israel? Jesus?)
- Our first clue is found in :6, the word "him" - "he will hear him from his holy heaven"
- You will note that the psalmist did not say "them" - "he will hear them"
- It does not mean that HE will not hear them in their day of trouble but, would it mean that HE would grant them according to their heart and fulfill their counsel if heart/counsel contradicted HIS own or HIS anointed's?
- You will also notice that there is the mention of "we" - "We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners" :5 but, again in conclusion it does not say "the LORD fulfil all our petitions" it reverts back thy "thy petitions".
- Again, this doesn't mean that Jehovah will not answer our petitions in the day of trouble, it means that it all goes back to Jehovah's will and the petitions of HIS anointed.
- Our second clue would have to be the word "anointed" itself. :6
- The word certainly could mean king. It is used that way in several instances. Kings are consecrated into their position.
- It could certainly mean priest. It is also used in that way on some occasions. Priests are consecrated into their position especially when talking about the High Priests.
- It could be saint as well. In a sense all the saints have been consecrated as being separated to the devoted service of the LORD.
- Could be is a wise thing to consider in all of these cases but, given the surrounding context of this psalm the most probable "could be" on the list of candidates rests on the head of Messiah. (don't you agree?)
- Our third clue is found in 20:9 "Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call".
- It appears by this that the "king" alluded to is the "anointed" but, it is clear that as David here includes himself in the group "we", David is addressing this psalm to a king greater than he. I would suggest that king to be our King - Thy Salvation - Jesus Christ. (which makes 20: today a most interesting read)
- If this is in fact David's prayer to Messiah: may Jehovah hear thee/defend thee/send help and strengthen thee/remember and accept your offerings and burnt sacrifice/grant you according to your heart and counsel/fulfill all of your petitions/hear you from HIS holy heaven, what is most interesting to me is what David as part of the "we" following behind Messiah intend to do in response to Messiah:
- kjv@Psalms:20:5 "We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners"
- kjv@Psalms:20:7 "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God".
- kjv@Psalms:20:8 "They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright".
- I am also fascinated by the idea that in Messiah's day of trouble that this trouble would be so involving that Jehovah from above would be called upon to "hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand".
- And that this could have been known and prayed about over 1000 years before that trouble occurred by David.
- The Day of Trouble: Part 1 19:1
- In the few weeks preceding Messiah's "day of trouble there was a flurry of activity recorded by His disciples in the four Gospels.
- As much activity perhaps as recorded of the previous three years. (hard exactly to tell as the Gospels are not written in precise chronological order)
- For sometime Messiah had kept Himself to the area of Galilee avoiding the death threats coming from Jerusalem. (you would think that a man that could heal anyone and everyone brought to him, that could teach with an authority never heard before, exorcise legends of demons from a body, calm seas and feed thousands would be most welcome and most popular. He was most popular but, as He himself made note of: popular for all the wrong reasons).
- The time comes when Messiah, against the advice of nearly everyone else involved, sets His sights and footsteps toward Jerusalem for the Passover. (not that the region of Galilee had been completely hospitable to Him either, in fact He had compared the judgement that would fall upon them to the judgment that had fallen upon Sodom, having seen the many glorious things that the Holy Father had done in confirmation of HIS Messiah and them still not believing/repenting).
- Two things I would like to point out that are of a concern for Messiah during this time 1. His own preparations looking toward His day of trouble 2. His preparations of His few trusted disciples who will be left after that day of trouble who will "will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners".
- Messiah is obediently determined to go now and accomplish what He had been sent by the Holy Father to do. A crowd of people follow beside Him and additional crowds join in the procession along the way.
- Upon Messiah's entry into Jerusalem one week prior to His day of trouble:
- Messiah (not one for pomp and circumstance) allows for His multitude to stage a triumphant entry, (as they would have a valiant victorious conqueror)
- Certainly it appears to the religious and political elite to be a call to arms, it is show time, either put up or shut up, do what you have set your minds to do and kill Him or else step back and have someone else do your dirty work for you.
- And if that is not enough, the following day Messiah goes into the Temple grounds and over turns the tables of the corrupt money changers just as He had done three years previous. It's as if to say for three years they've had time and reason to clean up the public image of this most holy Temple up and despite this time and despite this reason for embarrassment it remain just the same. (more shameful yet, it's hasn't changed in all this time because no one there wants to change it, the Temple priests are still making their cut off the corruption of the money changers).
- This is also the time frame when Messiah had been widely quoted as saying "destroy this temple and in three days I was raise it" speaking of His own body. (not that they could ever allow themselves to understand it that way).
- There were also a few final verbal confrontations that Messiah had with theScribes and Pharisees but, being totally out maneuvered doctrinally by Messiah they quickly gave it up. It became a war over public perceptions. It came to a point where there was no further conversation between Messiah and these so called religious leaders.
- It was during this time also that Messiah had some very intense training sessions with His few select disciples. In particular John records a lengthy session kjv@John:13-16 :
- He taught them what it means to be a servant by getting down on the floor Himself and washing their feet kjv@John:13:5-17
- He warned them in advance that among them is one who will betray Him kjv@John:13:18-19 so that they would continue to believe that He is Messiah when the day of trouble this betrayal would bring about finally happened. It became quite the topic of discussion.
- He taught them that in all of this trouble that the Father would be glorified and because of that the Father would soon glorify the Son (whom He claimed and soon was shown to be) kjv@John:13:31-33
- He commanded them to love one another kjv@John:13:34-35 as He had loved them.
- He taught them not to be troubled kjv@John:14:1, that He goes to prepare a place for them kjv@John:14:3, that where He goes now one day they will go kjv@John:14:4, He goes to the Father and that no one comes unto the Father except through Him kjv@John:14:6, He and the Father are one kjv@John:14:7-11, that those who believe on HIm will do the same works as He kjv@John:14:12, and that He will have the Father send to them a Comfortor the Holy Spirit kjv@John:14:16-18, to love Him is to keep His commandments kjv@John:14:21.
- kjv@John:15:1-8 He speaks of Himself being the true vine for them to abide in and in so doing they will become fruitful and glorify His Father. He goes on then to speak of the world hating them kjv@John:15:18-21 because they have hated Him, that He has exposed them for the sinners that they are kjv@John:15:22, that their hatred for what He has done is proof of their hatred for the Father as well kjv@John:15:22, that scripture is fulfilled in that they have hated Him without cause kjv@John:15:25.
- Then He goes on to say to them kjv@John:16 that it is not going to be easy, don't be offended, even family and friends will come after you to put you out thinking that they are doing God service, that it is expedient that He go now so that He can send the Holy Spirit, so that the Holy Spirit can now do HIS work in the world and among the believers, it is the Holy Spirit that will make their work the work that it most needs to be.
- And it seemed for a while that the disciples being spoken to might have understood all this (at least in part). But, what did they really understand?
- And then there was the "day" of Messiah's trouble.
- The Day of Trouble: Part 2 19:1
- Let's imagine for a moment one of the Temple priests in his den at home the night before reaching for a scroll that just happened to contain kjv@Psalm:20. He is troubled by the occurrences of this week and the talk the previous night at the High Priest Caiaphas's palace of what steps the Temple should take next. He is in agreement that this rebellious Nazarite has got to be put down but, is disturbed as well at what is being mentioned as possible solutions and is fearful that this whole affair hasn't gotten quite out of hand. Does Psalm:20 have any words of wisdom to help settle him? Let's see:
- "The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble". He cries out LORD hear me in this day of trouble, oh "God of Jacob defend" this your holy Temple from the attacks of this young riotous ruffian. "Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen us out of Zion".
- His silhouette upon the stone wall wrestles the floor prostrate a bit more unsettled. "Remember all thy people's offerings, and accept their many burnt sacrifices". "Grant us according to our heart, and fulfill all our counsel". "We will rejoice in thy deliverance in this dark hour from this child of Beelzebub, and in the name of you our God we will set up our banners: for you LORD fulfill all your chosen peoples' humble petitions".
- By the end of this prayer as you can imagine our priest does find a comfort, he does see a good end for this but, how to calm down the other priest and make them hopeful in this prayer as well... now that's a whole different question. The thought of that is not so comforting, because for the rank of priests above this lowly man this is not a "God come and help us" type affair this a "it's up to the strength and resolve of this wise and learned counsel to go get this done". Perhaps if he said: "we shall not trust our chariots nor our horses but, only trust in the name of the LORD our God?" he briefly considered. "Nah" he answered himself "they would just tell me that this is what it means to trust in the LORD God - to go out without any doubt of it and get the job done". And there would be those too that would jest "what? are you on the Nazarite's side as well"?
- If there is one thing that the group of priests know to a man it is:
- that from the time of John the Baptist this group has been called a "den of vipers" - defend us oh LORD.
- that the Nazarite in his best know sermon said that unless their righteousness exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees that they would not see the kingdom of heaven - defend us oh LORD.
- that he has called us the blind leading the blind, pictured our nation as sheep without shepherds, told us that even we would have to be born again, he rudely quotes the prophet that we worship him with our lips but our hearts are far from God. He has even claimed to some that he is God and that one cannot love the Father without loving the son as well - defend us oh LORD.
- The politicians are very uncomfortable. They say that Rome is getting anxious that something be done - defend us LORD, send help from sanctuary, strengthen us out of Zion.
- This certainly is a troubling day, it's not quite "the day of trouble", haven't we faced days just like this before?
- There is just one thing left to consider then... what to do about this idea of him raising on the third day?
- So now for the rest of us to be fair, what then are we left to believe in all of this?
- That the LORD answered this Psalm:20 prayer (or something like it - if there ever was one) by providing the chief priests with a disciple willing to betray the Nazarite?
- That the LORD defended them by providing men and women willing to testify falsely against the Nazarite?
- That the LORD strengthen them upon a Roman judge's innocent verdict by bringing a crowd a people to scream and threaten a public riot unless a bloody thief be traded for the Nazarite?
- That the LORD fulfilled HIS heart's good counsel by granting a divine verdict in favor of the continuance of these chief priests and against the life of this Nazarite?
- Do we forget what ilk these chief priests have throughout this proven themselves to be?
- I don't know if there was such a prayer. There is only one prayer of this type that I can find:
- "Grant Thee According to Thine Own Heart": 20:4
- What did Messiah desire of the Father now in this His "day of trouble" to be done? Perhaps the most thorough answer if found in Messiah's great prayer kjv@John:17 just before He left with His disciples over the brook Cedron into the garden where He would await to be arrested that same night.
- (See it there? He wasn't in this to glorify Himself. He was in this to glorify His Father. He had spent these years on earth obeying the Father, what the Father said He said, what the Father told Him to do He did. He did this in full knowledge that it would mean for Him His own death to atone for the sins of all mankind. The Father would not be glorified if this only meant death, no HE was more to be glorified in the Son's resurrection from death and for what the entire investment would mean towards the souls of all men. The Father would ultimately be glorified by glorifying the Son).
- (Messiah's desire was not to just simply rule over all flesh. If it were then flesh would not have to live eternally, He could grow a new crop whenever part of the present crop died off. No, His desire was that He could give eternal life to the flesh that up to now had not eternal life).
- (Messiah sought to be glorified with the Father's own self. To be in the Father's own presence, to be closely associated with the Father, to be part of the Father's good reputation, part of the reason others see the Father in such a holy light as they do. Anything that Messiah would be glorified by is because of the Father's).
- (Messiah did not seek to manifest His own name. In fact, to one person He had questioned them as to what they had meant calling Him good for there was only one that was truly good: the Father. Not even the men that obediently followed Him on this long grueling journey did He consider there by His own doing. He felt them His responsibility to watch over; a gift and responsibility from the Father placed upon Him. He made sure that they thought of it in this way as well).
- (There have been many others claiming to have been sent to us by God, not one of them established by miraculous daily confirmations from above in this way. It is not only the words that brought about these men's belief, it was the many confirmations, the many experiences with the miraculous. The words of course are all important but, it is impossible for us to get to the level of depth that the words of God need to be understood in unless the experience of the person of Christ and the numerous confirmations surrounding Him are present as well. The Father did send to us HIS Messiah. There can be no other logical conclusion to be made, except to say that He is Christ, unless to outright deny the existence of the person and the words and the confirmations altogether).
- (Not only is Messiah to be glorified in the Father, He is to be glorified in that these many men and women given to follow Him glorify the Father in a similar way as does He. This is His mindset. This is His hearts' desire).
- (The Son is one with the Father. When all goes according to His desire so too will be these men and women one with the Father and the Son. If He were to stay with them it would not be the same, their sins would still stand in the way. If He simply forgave them their sins, they would still be sinners, they would not have been quickened back to spiritual life, they would not have been given the Holy Spirit to turn the tablet of their heart from stone to warm supple vibrant flesh.).
- Remember what we are talking about here is the heart of Messiah that Jehovah is being asked to grant and fulfill.
- (Again the sense that these disciples were given to Him, that He felt responsible to the Father for their spiritual well being. God's name is HIS reputation; now that Christ is leaving, His petition is for these men and women to be guarded by the Father's reputation)
- (Messiah's joy is to be fulfilled in them that have been given Him. It will be theirs because of the words of Jehovah that He has spoken to them throughout).
- (They are not of the world. They have been separated from the world by the Father and given to the Messiah for safe keeping. The object is not for them to escape the world but, to be kept from the world's evil).
- (Sanctify means to make holy/purify/consecrate. What better wish for anybody. It shows the depths of His affection towards the Father and for these men and women. And it is not just a nebulous well wish, there is a way and means behind this proposed sanctification "thy truth", the Father's word that HE sent through Messiah is that "truth" used for sanctification)
- (In context meaning that He has sent His sanctified into the world not out of it)
- (In context having sent them now into the world the word of truth sent from above makes Him all the more holy that they might be made holy by the same word. In other words Christ is to be at the center of all sanctifying truth)
- (The unity long experienced between Father and Son is now to be experienced by those that have been given to the Son as well. Oh the wonderful heart of Messiah!)
- (The glory that the Father has shined upon Messiah, Messiah now shines upon them, it is all the same glory. We are not glorious in and of ourselves, as He glories in the Father so we glory in Messiah)
- (They are not yet to be taken out of this world remember but, there with Him in His glorious kingdom they will one day be)
- (Is there not much to love about these many petitions? these many revelations of the person and character of Jesus Christ? these many glimpses of the heart of the Father as well?)
- What we find in kjv@John:17 is an astonishing prayer by Jesus in His "day of trouble".
- What we find in kjv@Psalms:20 is an astonishing prayer anticipating Messiah's "day of trouble".
- Put them together side by side and we find an astonishing prayer for the future of all mankind.
- Can there be any doubt why David when praying ahead of time for Messiah can confidently then pray "Messiah - May the LORD:
- "Now Know I that the LORD Saveth His Anointed": :6
- In the early morning dawn, from the disciples boat 300 cubits or so from the shoreline can dimly be seen the figure of a man facing towards them and the smoke and embers of a fire pit burning close behind. John is the first to suspect the figure to be his Messiah for a third time come to meet with them. Peter, being the impulsive type of man that he was, jumped ship and swam the distance. Others, more sensible, paddled to close enough to drag in the craft and their miraculous haul. Yes indeed it was their beloved Jesus.
- On the pit was the sizzling smell of fresh fish. It's funny how sometimes the most profound statements about a person can be boil down to the very simplest of pictures, the picture of really good friends on a beach by a fire eating a piece of really good fish at sunrise. I can imagine that it was probably the best piece of fish these fisherman ever feasted upon regardless of what spices where on it, just being that it was the fish that their Messiah had cooked for them.
- You see, it's because really all about what that fish represented. And what it represented was everything that this Psalm 20 prayed would happen 1000 years prior:
- :1 that Jehovah did hear Messiah, that Jehovah defend Messiah.
- :2 that Jehovah did send help and strengthen Messiah.
- :3 that Jehovah did remember/accept Messiah's ultimate offering and burnt sacrifice.
- :4 that Jehovah did grant Messiah according to Messiah's heart and fulfill Messiah's counsel.
- Now along with all mankind these men can rejoice in "thy salvation", and in the name of our God can prepare to set up their banners, that Jehovah did fulfill all of Messiah's petitions. 20:5
- Now these men know that Jehovah did save HIS anointed, that Jehovah did hear Messiah from Jehovah's holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. 20:6
- And now there is every reason to believe that these men are next to be saved, that their king our Messiah will hear them when we call just the same. 20:9
- A moment to explain "burnt sacrifice": (for those still opposed to this interpretation of 20: )
- The sacrifices of faith came to the point in Israel where it was just them going through the motions:
- With Messiah the idea of burnt offering had to be something much different:
- The author of Hebrews continues stating the spiritual truth behind it all:
- "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses:" :7
- Who is it that in this momentous "day of trouble" trusted in their chariots and horses? (I think that it is plain to see.)
- "but we will remember the name of the LORD our God". :8
- Who was it that actually trusted in the name of the LORD our God?
- "They are brought down and fallen" :8
- The year 70 A.D is when these political and religious elites' grip on things finally crumbled all around them.
- "but we are risen, and stand upright" :8
- And when we have held ourselves tight to setting the of the LORD's banners, we have raised the glorification of both the Father and HIS Son (our King) and He of us.
- Oh, if only brothers and sisters to have the heart like Jesus did to put back into this our day of trouble!
- I may have started early on thinking that Psalm:20 was all about me and you. Had I not been concerned about that phrase "Grant thee according to thine own heart, and fulfil all thy counsel" and wrestled over several days with it, I would have missed Psalm:20's most vital message:

17:4-5 "I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
