* Follow (5720 ) after charity , and desire (5720 ) spiritual gifts , but rather that ye may prophesy (5725 ). * For he that speaketh (5723 ) in an unknown tongue speaketh (5719 ) not unto men , but unto God : for no man understandeth (5719 ) him ; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh (5719 ) mysteries . * But he that prophesieth (5723 ) speaketh (5719 ) unto men to edification , and exhortation , and comfort . * He that speaketh (5723 ) in an unknown tongue edifieth (5719 ) himself ; but he that prophesieth (5723 ) edifieth (5719 ) the church . * I would (5719 ) that ye all spake (5721 ) with tongues , but rather that ye prophesied (5725 ): for greater is he that prophesieth (5723 ) than he that speaketh (5723 ) with tongues , except he interpret (5725 ), that the church may receive (5632 ) edifying . * Now , brethren , if I come (5632 ) unto you speaking (5723 ) with tongues , what shall I profit (5692 ) you , except I shall speak (5661 ) to you either by revelation , or by knowledge , or by prophesying , or by doctrine ? * And even things without life giving (5723 ) sound , whether pipe or harp , except they give (5632 ) a distinction in the sounds , how shall it be known (5701 ) what is piped (5746 ) or harped (5746 )? * For if the trumpet give (5632 ) an uncertain sound , who shall prepare himself (5695 ) to the battle ? * So likewise ye , except ye utter (5632 ) by the tongue words easy to be understood , how shall it be known (5701 ) what is spoken (5746 )? for ye shall (5704 ) speak (5723 ) into the air . * There are (5748 ), it may be (5630 ), so many kinds of voices in the world , and none of them is without signification (5625 ). * Therefore if I know (5762 ) not the meaning of the voice , I shall be (5704 ) unto him that speaketh (5723 ) a barbarian , and he that speaketh (5723 ) shall be a barbarian unto me . * Even so ye , forasmuch as ye are (5748 ) zealous of spiritual gifts , seek (5720 ) that ye may excel (5725 ) to the edifying of the church . * Wherefore let him that speaketh (5723 ) in an unknown tongue pray (5737 ) that he may interpret (5725 ). * For if I pray (5741 ) in an unknown tongue , my spirit prayeth (5736 ), but my understanding is (5748 ) unfruitful . * What is it (5748 ) then ? I will pray (5695 ) with the spirit , and I will pray (5695 ) with the understanding also : I will sing (5692 ) with the spirit , and I will sing (5692 ) with the understanding also . * Else when thou shalt bless (5661 ) with the spirit , how shall he that occupieth (5723 ) the room of the unlearned say (5692 ) Amen at thy giving of thanks , seeing he understandeth (5758 ) not what thou sayest (5719 )? * For thou verily givest thanks (5719 ) well , but the other is not edified (5743 ). * I thank (5719 ) my God , I speak (5723 ) with tongues more than ye all : * Yet in the church I had rather (5719 ) speak (5658 ) five words with my understanding , that by my voice I might teach (5661 ) others also , than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue . * Brethren , be (5737 ) not children in understanding : howbeit in malice be ye children (5720 ), but in understanding be (5737 ) men . * In the law it is written (5769 ), With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak (5692 ) unto this people ; and yet for all that will they not hear (5695 ) me , saith (5719 ) the Lord . * Wherefore tongues are (5748 ) for a sign , not to them that believe (5723 ), but to them that believe not : but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not , but for them which believe (5723 ). * If therefore the whole church be come together (5632 ) into one place , and all speak (5725 ) with tongues , and there come in (5632 ) those that are unlearned , or unbelievers , will they not say (5692 ) that ye are mad (5736 )? * But if all prophesy (5725 ), and there come in (5632 ) one that believeth not , or one unlearned , he is convinced (5743 ) of all , he is judged (5743 ) of all : * And thus are the secrets of his heart made (5736 ) manifest ; and so falling down (5631 ) on his face he will worship (5692 ) God , and report (5723 ) that God is (5748 ) in you of a truth . * How is it (5748 ) then , brethren ? when ye come together (5741 ), every one of you hath (5719 ) a psalm , hath (5719 ) a doctrine , hath (5719 ) a tongue , hath (5719 ) a revelation , hath (5719 ) an interpretation . Let all things be done (5634 ) unto edifying . * If any man speak (5719 ) in an unknown tongue , let it be by two , or at the most by three , and that by course ; and let one interpret (5720 ). * But if there be (5753 ) no interpreter , let him keep silence (5720 ) in the church ; and let him speak (5720 ) to himself , and to God . * Let the prophets speak (5720 ) two or three , and let the other judge (5720 ). * If any thing be revealed (5686 ) to another that sitteth by (5740 ), let the first hold his peace (5720 ). * For ye may (5736 ) all prophesy (5721 ) one by one , that all may learn (5725 ), and all may be comforted (5747 ). * And the spirits of the prophets are subject (5743 ) to the prophets . * For God is (5748 ) not the author of confusion , but of peace , as in all churches of the saints . * Let your women keep silence (5720 ) in the churches : for it is not permitted (5769 ) unto them to speak (5721 ); but they are commanded to be under obedience (5733 ), as also saith (5719 ) the law . * And if they will (5719 ) learn (5629 ) any thing , let them ask (5720 ) their husbands at home : for it is (5748 ) a shame for women to speak (5721 ) in the church . * What ? came the word of God out (5627 ) from you ? or came it (5656 ) unto you only ? * If any man think himself (5719 ) to be (5750 ) a prophet , or spiritual , let him acknowledge (5720 ) that the things that I write (5719 ) unto you are (5748 ) the commandments of the Lord . * But if any man be ignorant (5719 ), let him be ignorant (5720 ). * Wherefore , brethren , covet (5720 ) to prophesy (5721 ), and forbid (5720 ) not to speak (5721 ) with tongues . * Let all things be done (5737 ) decently and in order .
