* Wherefore laying aside (5642 ) all malice , and all guile , and hypocrisies , and envies , and all evil speakings , * As newborn babes , desire (5657 ) the sincere milk of the word , that ye may grow (5686 ) thereby : * If so be ye have tasted (5662 ) that the Lord is gracious . * To whom coming (5740 ), as unto a living (5723 ) stone , disallowed (5772 ) indeed of men , but chosen of God , and precious , * Ye also , as lively (5723 ) stones , are built up (5743 ) a spiritual house , an holy priesthood , to offer up (5658 ) spiritual sacrifices , acceptable to God by Jesus Christ . * Wherefore also it is contained (5719 ) in the scripture , Behold (5628 ), I lay (5719 ) in Sion a chief corner stone , elect , precious : and he that believeth (5723 ) on him shall not be confounded (5686 ). * Unto you therefore which believe (5723 ) he is precious : but unto them which be disobedient (5723 ), the stone which the builders (5723 ) disallowed (5656 ), the same is made (5675 ) the head of the corner , * And a stone of stumbling , and a rock of offence , even to them which stumble (5719 ) at the word , being disobedient (5723 ): whereunto also they were appointed (5681 ). * But ye are a chosen generation , a royal priesthood , an holy nation , a peculiar people ; that ye should shew forth (5661 ) the praises of him who hath called (5660 ) you out of darkness into his marvellous light : * Which in time past were not a people , but are now the people of God : which had not obtained mercy (5772 ), but now have obtained mercy (5685 ). * Dearly beloved , I beseech (5719 ) you as strangers and pilgrims , abstain from (5733 ) fleshly lusts , which war (5731 ) against the soul ; * Having (5723 ) your conversation honest among the Gentiles : that , whereas they speak against (5719 ) you as evildoers , they may by your good works , which they shall behold (5660 ), glorify (5661 ) God in the day of visitation . * Submit yourselves (5649 ) to every ordinance of man for the Lords sake : whether it be to the king , as supreme (5723 ); * Or unto governors , as unto them that are sent (5746 ) by him for the punishment of evildoers , and for the praise of them that do well . * For so is (5748 ) the will of God , that with well doing (5723 ) ye may put to silence (5721 ) the ignorance of foolish men : * As free , and not using (5723 ) your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness , but as the servants of God . * Honour (5657 ) all men . Love (5720 ) the brotherhood . Fear (5737 ) God . Honour (5720 ) the king . * Servants , be subject (5746 ) to your masters with all fear ; not only to the good and gentle , but also to the froward . * For this is thankworthy , if a man for conscience toward God endure (5719 ) grief , suffering (5723 ) wrongfully . * For what glory is it , if , when ye be buffeted (5746 ) for your faults (5723 ), ye shall take it patiently (5692 )? but if , when ye do well (5723 ), and suffer (5723 ) for it , ye take it patiently (5692 ), this is acceptable with God . * For even hereunto were ye called (5681 ): because Christ also suffered (5627 ) for us , leaving (5723 ) us an example , that ye should follow (5661 ) his steps : * Who did (5656 ) no sin , neither was guile found (5681 ) in his mouth : * Who , when he was reviled (5746 ), reviled not again (5707 ); when he suffered (5723 ), he threatened (5707 ) not ; but committed (5707 ) himself to him that judgeth (5723 ) righteously : * Who his own self bare (5656 ) our sins in his own body on the tree , that we , being dead (5637 ) to sins , should live (5661 ) unto righteousness : by whose stripes ye were healed (5681 ). * For ye were (5713 ) as sheep going astray (5746 ); but are now returned (5648 ) unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls .
