* For yourselves , brethren , know (5758 ) our entrance in unto you , that it was (5754 ) not in vain : * But even after that we had suffered before (5631 ), and were shamefully entreated (5685 ), as ye know (5758 ), at Philippi , we were bold (5662 ) in our God to speak (5658 ) unto you the gospel of God with much contention . * For our exhortation was not of deceit , nor of uncleanness , nor in guile : * But as we were allowed (5769 ) of God to be put in trust (5683 ) with the gospel , even so we speak (5719 ); not as pleasing (5723 ) men , but God , which trieth (5723 ) our hearts . * For neither at any time used we (5675 ) flattering words , as ye know (5758 ), nor a cloke of covetousness ; God is witness : * Nor of men sought (5723 ) we glory , neither of you , nor yet of others , when we might (5740 ) have been (5750 ) burdensome , as the apostles of Christ . * But we were (5675 ) gentle among you , even as a nurse cherisheth (5725 ) her children : * So being affectionately desirous (5734 ) of you , we were willing (5707 ) to have imparted (5629 ) unto you , not the gospel of God only , but also our own souls , because ye ere (5769 ) dear unto us . * For ye remember (5719 ), brethren , our labour and travail : for labouring (5740 ) night and day , because we would not be chargeable (5658 ) unto any of you , we preached (5656 ) unto you the gospel of God . * Ye are witnesses , and God also , how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves (5675 ) among you that believe (5723 ): * As ye know (5758 ) how we exhorted (5723 ) and comforted (5740 ) and charged (5734 ) every one of you , as a father doth his children , * That ye would walk (5658 ) worthy of God , who hath called (5723 ) you unto his kingdom and glory . * For this cause also thank (5719 ) we God without ceasing , because , when ye received (5631 ) the word of God which ye heard of us , ye received (5662 ) it not as the word of men , but as it is (5748 ) in truth , the word of God , which effectually worketh (5731 ) also in you that believe (5723 ). * For ye , brethren , became (5675 ) followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are (5752 ) in Christ Jesus : for ye also have suffered (5627 ) like things of your own countrymen , even as they have of the Jews : * Who both killed (5660 ) the Lord Jesus , and their own prophets , and have persecuted (5660 ) us ; and they please (5723 ) not God , and are contrary to all men : * Forbidding (5723 ) us to speak (5658 ) to the Gentiles that they might be saved (5686 ), to fill up (5658 ) their sins alway : for the wrath is come (5656 ) upon them to the uttermost . * But we , brethren , being taken (5685 ) from you for a short time in presence , not in heart , endeavoured (5656 ) the more abundantly to see (5629 ) your face with great desire . * Wherefore we would (5656 ) have come (5629 ) unto you , even I Paul , once and again ; but Satan hindered (5656 ) us . * For what is our hope , or joy , or crown of rejoicing ? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming ? * For ye are (5748 ) our glory and joy .
