* Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth (5627 ) his hands to vex (5658 ) certain of the church . * And he killed (5627 ) James the brother of John with the sword . * And because he saw (5631 ) it pleased (5748 ) the Jews , he proceeded further (5639 ) to take (5629 ) Peter also . (Then were (5713 ) the days of unleavened bread .) * And when he had apprehended (5660 ) him , he put (5639 ) him in prison , and delivered (5631 ) him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep (5721 ) him ; intending (5740 ) after Easter to bring him forth (5629 ) to the people . * Peter therefore was kept (5712 ) in prison : but prayer was (5713 ) made (5740 ) without ceasing of the church unto God for him . * And when Herod would (5707 ) have brought him forth (5721 ), the same night Peter was (5713 ) sleeping (5746 ) between two soldiers , bound (5772 ) with two chains : and the keepers before the door kept (5707 ) the prison . * And , behold (5628 ), the angel of the Lord came upon (5627 ) him , and a light shined (5656 ) in the prison : and he smote (5660 ) Peter on the side , and raised him up (5656 ), saying (5723 ), Arise up (5628 ) quickly . And his chains fell off (5627 ) from his hands . * And the angel said (5627 ) unto him , Gird thyself (5669 ), and bind on (5669 ) thy sandals . And so he did (5656 ). And he saith (5719 ) unto him , Cast thy garment about (5640 ) thee , and follow (5720 ) me . * And he went out (5631 ), and followed (5707 ) him ; and wist (5715 ) not that it was (5748 ) true which was done (5740 ) by the angel ; but thought (5707 ) he saw (5721 ) a vision . * When they were past (5631 ) the first and the second ward , they came (5627 ) unto the iron gate that leadeth (5723 ) unto the city ; which opened (5681 ) to them of his own accord : and they went out (5631 ), and passed on through (5627 ) one street ; and forthwith the angel departed (5627 ) from him . * And when Peter was come (5637 ) to himself , he said (5627 ), Now I know (5758 ) of a surety , that the Lord hath sent (5656 ) his angel , and hath delivered (5639 ) me out of the hand of Herod , and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews . * And when he had considered (5631 ) the thing , he came (5627 ) to the house of Mary the mother of John , whose surname was (5746 ) Mark ; where many were (5713 ) gathered together (5772 ) praying (5740 ). * And as Peter knocked at (5660 ) the door of the gate , a damsel came (5627 ) to hearken (5658 ), named Rhoda . * And when she knew (5631 ) Peters voice , she opened (5656 ) not the gate for gladness , but ran in (5631 ), and told how (5656 ) Peter stood (5760 ) before the gate . * And they said (5627 ) unto her , Thou art mad (5736 ). But she constantly affirmed (5711 ) that it was (5721 ) even so . Then said they (5707 ), It is (5748 ) his angel . * But Peter continued (5707 ) knocking (5723 ): and when they had opened (5660 ) the door , and saw (5627 ) him , they were astonished (5627 ). * But he , beckoning (5660 ) unto them with the hand to hold their peace (5721 ), declared (5662 ) unto them how the Lord had brought (5627 ) him out of the prison . And he said (5627 ), Go shew (5657 ) these things unto James , and to the brethren . And he departed (5631 ), and went (5675 ) into another place . * Now as soon as it was (5637 ) day , there was (5713 ) no small stir among the soldiers , what was become (5633 ) of Peter . * And when Herod had sought for (5660 ) him , and found him (5631 ) not , he examined (5660 ) the keepers , and commanded (5656 ) that they should be put to death (5683 ). And he went down (5631 ) from Judaea to Caesarea , and there abode (5707 ). * And Herod was (5713 ) highly displeased (5723 ) with them of Tyre and Sidon : but they came (5713 ) with one accord to him , and , having made Blastus the kings chamberlain their friend (5660 ), desired (5710 ) peace ; because their country was nourished (5745 ) by the kings country . * And upon a set day Herod , arrayed (5671 ) in royal apparel , sat (5660 ) upon his throne , and made an oration (5707 ) unto them . * And the people gave a shout (5707 ), saying , It is the voice of a god , and not of a man . * And immediately the angel of the Lord smote (5656 ) him , because he gave (5656 ) not God the glory : and he was (5637 ) eaten of worms , and gave up the ghost (5656 ). * But the word of God grew (5707 ) and multiplied (5712 ). * And Barnabas and Saul returned (5656 ) from Jerusalem , when they had fulfilled (5660 ) their ministry , and took with them (5631 ) John , whose surname was (5685 ) Mark .
