Acts:15
Seeker Overlay ON
*
And certain men which came down (
5631 )
from Judaea taught (
5707 )
the brethren ,
and said ,
Except ye be circumcised (
5747 )
after the manner of Moses ,
ye cannot (
5736 )
be saved (
5683 ).
*
When therefore Paul and Barnabas had (
5637 )
no small dissension and disputation with them ,
they determined (
5656 )
that Paul and Barnabas ,
and certain other of them ,
should go up (
5721 )
to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question .
*
And being brought on their way (
5685 )
by the church ,
they passed through (
5711 )
Phenice and Samaria ,
declaring (
5740 )
the conversion of the Gentiles :
and they caused (
5707 )
great joy unto all the brethren .
*
And when they were come (
5637 )
to Jerusalem ,
they were received (
5681 )
of the church ,
and of the apostles and elders ,
and they declared (
5656 )
all things that God had done (
5656 )
with them .
*
But there rose up (
5627 )
certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed (
5761 ),
saying (
5723 ),
That it was needful (
5748 )
to circumcise (
5721 )
them ,
and to command (
5721 )
them to keep (
5721 )
the law of Moses .
*
And the apostles and elders came together (
5681 )
for to consider (
5629 )
of this matter .
*
And when there had been (
5637 )
much disputing ,
Peter rose up (
5631 ),
and said (
5627 )
unto them ,
Men and brethren ,
ye know (
5736 )
how that a good while ago God made choice (
5668 )
among us ,
that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear (
5658 )
the word of the gospel ,
and believe (
5658 ).
*
And God ,
which knoweth the hearts ,
bare them witness (
5656 ),
giving (
5631 )
them the Holy Ghost ,
even as he did unto us ;
*
And put no difference (
5656 )
between us and them ,
purifying (
5660 )
their hearts by faith .
*
Now therefore why tempt ye (
5719 )
God ,
to put (
5629 )
a yoke upon the neck of the disciples ,
which neither our fathers nor we were able (
5656 )
to bear (
5658 )?
*
But we believe (
5719 )
that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved (
5683 ),
even as they .
*
Then all the multitude kept silence (
5656 ),
and gave audience (
5707 )
to Barnabas and Paul ,
declaring (
5740 )
what miracles and wonders God had wrought (
5656 )
among the Gentiles by them .
*
And after they had held their peace (
5658 ),
James answered (
5662 ),
saying (
5723 ),
Men and brethren ,
hearken (
5657 )
unto me :
*
Simeon hath declared (
5662 )
how God at the first did visit (
5662 )
the Gentiles ,
to take (
5629 )
out of them a people for his name .
*
And to this agree (
5719 )
the words of the prophets ;
as it is written (
5769 ),
*
After this I will return (
5692 ),
and will build again (
5692 )
the tabernacle of David ,
which is fallen down (
5761 );
and I will build again (
5692 )
the ruins (
5772 )
thereof ,
and I will set it up (
5692 ):
*
That the residue of men might seek after (
5661 )
the Lord ,
and all the Gentiles ,
upon whom my name is called (
5769 ) ,
saith (
5719 )
the Lord ,
who doeth (
5723 )
all these things .
*
Known unto God are (
5748 )
all his works from the beginning of the world .
*
Wherefore my sentence is (
5719 ),
that we trouble (
5721 )
not them ,
which from among the Gentiles are turned (
5723 )
to God :
*
But that we write (
5658 )
unto them ,
that they abstain (
5733 )
from pollutions of idols ,
and from fornication ,
and from things strangled ,
and from blood .
*
For Moses of old time hath (
5719 )
in every city them that preach (
5723 )
him ,
being read (
5746 )
in the synagogues every sabbath day .
*
Then pleased it (
5656 )
the apostles and elders ,
with the whole church ,
to send (
5658 )
chosen (
5671 )
men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas ;
namely ,
Judas surnamed (
5746 )
Barsabas ,
and Silas ,
chief (
5740 )
men among the brethren :
*
And they wrote (
5660 )
letters by them after this manner ;
The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting (
5721 )
unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia :
*
Forasmuch as we have heard (
5656 ),
that certain which went out (
5631 )
from us have troubled (
5656 )
you with words ,
subverting (
5723 )
your souls ,
saying (
5723 ),
Ye must be circumcised (
5745 ),
and keep (
5721 )
the law :
to whom we gave no such commandment (
5668 ):
*
It seemed good (
5656 )
unto us ,
being assembled (
5637 )
with one accord ,
to send (
5658 )
chosen (
5671 )
men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul ,
*
Men that have hazarded (
5761 )
their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ .
*
We have sent (
5758 )
therefore Judas and Silas ,
who shall also tell (
5723 )
you the same things by mouth .
*
For it seemed good (
5656 )
to the Holy Ghost ,
and to us ,
to lay upon (
5733 )
you no greater burden than these necessary things ;
*
That ye abstain (
5733 )
from meats offered to idols ,
and from blood ,
and from things strangled ,
and from fornication :
from which if ye keep (
5723 )
yourselves ,
ye shall do (
5692 )
well .
Fare ye well (
5770 ).
*
So when they were dismissed (
5685 ),
they came (
5627 )
to Antioch :
and when they had gathered the multitude together (
5631 ),
they delivered (
5656 )
the epistle :
*
Which when they had read (
5631 ),
they rejoiced (
5644 )
for the consolation .
*
And Judas and Silas ,
being (
5752 )
prophets also themselves ,
exhorted (
5656 )
the brethren with many words ,
and confirmed (
5656 )
them .
*
And after they had tarried (
5660 )
there a space ,
they were let go (
5681 )
in peace from the brethren unto the apostles .
*
Notwithstanding it pleased (
5656 )
Silas to abide there still (
5658 ).
*
Paul also and Barnabas continued (
5707 )
in Antioch ,
teaching (
5723 )
and preaching (
5734 )
the word of the Lord ,
with many others also .
*
And some days after Paul said (
5627 )
unto Barnabas ,
Let us go again (
5660 )
and visit (
5667 )
our brethren in every city where we have preached (
5656 )
the word of the Lord ,
and see how they do (
5719 ).
*
And Barnabas determined (
5662 )
to take with them (
5629 )
John ,
whose surname was (
5746 )
Mark .
*
But Paul thought not good (
5707 )
to take him with them (
5629 ),
who departed (
5631 )
from them from Pamphylia ,
and went (
5631 )
not with them to the work .
*
And the contention was (
5633 )
so sharp between them ,
that they departed asunder (
5683 )
one from the other :
and so Barnabas took (
5631 )
Mark ,
and sailed (
5658 )
unto Cyprus ;
*
And Paul chose (
5671 )
Silas ,
and departed (
5627 ),
being recommended (
5685 )
by the brethren unto the grace of God .
*
And he went through (
5711 )
Syria and Cilicia ,
confirming (
5723 )
the churches .
