Acts:17

*
Now when they had passed through (
5660 )
Amphipolis and Apollonia ,
they came (
5627 )
to Thessalonica ,
where was (
5713 )
a synagogue of the Jews :
*
And Paul ,
as his manner was (
5756 ),
went in (
5627 )
unto them ,
and three sabbath days reasoned (
5711 )
with them out of the scriptures ,
*
Opening (
5723 )
and alleging (
5734 ),
that Christ must needs (
5713 )
have suffered (
5629 ),
and risen again (
5629 )
from the dead ;
and that this Jesus ,
whom I preach (
5719 )
unto you ,
is (
5748 )
Christ .
*
And some of them believed (
5681 ),
and consorted (
5681 )
with Paul and Silas ;
and of the devout (
5740 )
Greeks a great multitude ,
and of the chief women not a few .
*
But the Jews which believed not (
5723 ),
moved with envy (
5660 ),
took unto them (
5642 )
certain lewd fellows of the baser sort ,
and gathered a company (
5660 ),
and set all the city on an uproar (
5707 ),
and assaulted (
5631 )
the house of Jason ,
and sought (
5707 )
to bring (
5629 )
them out to the people .
*
And when they found (
5631 )
them not ,
they drew (
5707 )
Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city ,
crying (
5723 ),
These that have turned the world upside down (
5660 )
are come (
5748 )
hither also ;
*
Whom Jason hath received (
5766 ):
and these all do (
5719 )
contrary to the decrees of Caesar ,
saying (
5723 )
that there is (
5750 )
another king ,
one Jesus .
*
And they troubled (
5656 )
the people and the rulers of the city ,
when they heard (
5723 )
these things .
*
And when they had taken (
5631 )
security of Jason ,
and of the other ,
they let them go (
5656 ).
*
And the brethren immediately sent away (
5656 )
Paul and Silas by night unto Berea :
who coming (
5637 )
thither went (
5713 )
into the synagogue of the Jews .
*
These were (
5713 )
more noble than those in Thessalonica ,
in that they received (
5662 )
the word with all readiness of mind ,
and searched (
5723 )
the scriptures daily ,
whether those things were (
5722 )
so .
*
Therefore many of them believed (
5656 );
also of honourable women which were Greeks ,
and of men ,
not a few .
*
But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge (
5627 )
that the word of God was preached (
5648 )
of Paul at Berea ,
they came (
5627 )
thither also ,
and stirred up (
5723 )
the people .
*
And then immediately the brethren sent away (
5656 )
Paul to go (
5738 )
as it were to the sea :
but Silas and Timotheus abode there still (
5707 ).
*
And they that conducted (
5723 )
Paul brought (
5627 )
him unto Athens :
and receiving (
5631 )
a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come (
5632 )
to him with all speed ,
they departed (
5713 ).
*
Now while Paul waited for (
5740 )
them at Athens ,
his spirit was stirred (
5712 )
in him ,
when he saw (
5723 )
the city wholly given (
5752 )
to idolatry .
*
Therefore disputed he (
5711 )
in the synagogue with the Jews ,
and with the devout persons (
5740 ),
and in the market daily with them that met with him (
5723 ).
*
Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans ,
and of the Stoicks ,
encountered (
5707 )
him .
And some said (
5707 ),
What will (
5722 )
this babbler say (
5721 )?
other some ,
He seemeth (
5719 )
to be (
5750 )
a setter forth of strange gods :
because he preached (
5710 )
unto them Jesus ,
and the resurrection .
*
And they took (
5637 )
him ,
and brought him (
5627 )
unto Areopagus ,
saying (
5723 ),
May (
5736 )
we know (
5629 )
what this new doctrine ,
whereof thou speakest (
5746 ),
is ?
*
For thou bringest (
5719 )
certain strange things (
5723 )
to our ears :
we would (
5736 )
know (
5629 )
therefore what these things mean (
5722 ) (
5750 ).
* (
For all the Athenians and strangers which were there (
5723 )
spent their time (
5707 )
in nothing else ,
but either to tell (
5721 ),
or to hear (
5721 )
some new thing .)
*
Then Paul stood (
5685 )
in the midst of Mars hill ,
and said (
5713 ),
Ye men of Athens ,
I perceive (
5719 )
that in all things ye are too superstitious .
*
For as I passed by (
5740 ),
and beheld (
5723 )
your devotions ,
I found (
5627 )
an altar with this inscription (
5718 ),
TO THE UNKNOWN GOD .
Whom therefore ye ignorantly (
5723 )
worship (
5719 ),
him declare (
5719 )
I unto you .
*
God that made (
5660 )
the world and all things therein ,
seeing that he is (
5723 )
Lord of heaven and earth ,
dwelleth (
5719 )
not in temples made with hands ;
*
Neither is worshipped (
5743 )
with mens hands ,
as though he needed (
5740 )
any thing ,
seeing he giveth (
5723 )
to all life ,
and breath ,
and all things ;
*
And hath made (
5656 )
of one blood all nations of men for to dwell (
5721 )
on all the face of the earth ,
and hath determined (
5660 )
the times before appointed (
5772 ),
and the bounds of their habitation ;
*
That they should seek (
5721 )
the Lord ,
if haply they might feel (
5659 )
after him ,
and find him (
5630 ),
though he be (
5723 )
not far from every one of us :
*
For in him we live (
5719 ),
and move (
5743 ),
and have our being (
5748 );
as certain also of your own poets have said (
5758 ),
For we are (
5748 )
also his offspring .
*
Forasmuch then as we are (
5723 )
the offspring of God ,
we ought (
5719 )
not to think (
5721 )
that the Godhead is (
5750 )
like unto gold ,
or silver ,
or stone ,
graven by art and mans device .
*
And the times of this ignorance God winked at (
5660 );
but now commandeth (
5719 )
all men every where to repent (
5721 ):
*
Because he hath appointed (
5656 )
a day ,
in the which he will (
5719 )
judge (
5721 )
the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained (
5656 );
whereof he hath given (
5631 )
assurance unto all men ,
in that he hath raised (
5660 )
him from the dead .
*
And when they heard (
5660 )
of the resurrection of the dead ,
some mocked (
5707 ):
and others said (
5627 ),
We will hear (
5695 )
thee again of this matter .
*
So Paul departed (
5627 )
from among them .
*
Howbeit certain men clave (
5685 )
unto him ,
and believed (
5656 ):
among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite ,
and a woman named Damaris ,
and others with them .
