* And it came to pass (5633 ), that , while Apollos was (5750 ) at Corinth , Paul having passed (5631 ) through the upper coasts came (5629 ) to Ephesus : and finding (5631 ) certain disciples , * He said (5627 ) unto them , Have ye received (5627 ) the Holy Ghost since ye believed (5660 )? And they said (5627 ) unto him , We have not so much as heard (5656 ) whether there be any (5748 ) Holy Ghost . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , Unto what then were ye baptized (5681 )? And they said (5627 ), Unto Johns baptism . * Then said (5627 ) Paul , John verily baptized (5656 ) with the baptism of repentance , saying (5723 ) unto the people , that they should believe (5661 ) on him which should come (5740 ) after him , that is (5748 ), on Christ Jesus . * When they heard (5660 ) this , they were baptized (5681 ) in the name of the Lord Jesus . * And when Paul had laid his hands upon (5631 ) them , the Holy Ghost came (5627 ) on them ; and they spake (5707 ) with tongues , and prophesied (5707 ). * And all the men were (5713 ) about twelve . * And he went (5631 ) into the synagogue , and spake boldly (5711 ) for the space of three months , disputing (5740 ) and persuading (5723 ) the things concerning the kingdom of God . * But when divers were hardened (5712 ), and believed not (5707 ), but spake evil (5723 ) of that way before the multitude , he departed (5631 ) from them , and separated (5656 ) the disciples , disputing (5740 ) daily in the school of one Tyrannus . * And this continued (5633 ) by the space of two years ; so that all they which dwelt in (5723 ) Asia heard (5658 ) the word of the Lord Jesus , both Jews and Greeks . * And God wrought (5707 ) special (5631 ) miracles by the hands of Paul : * So that from his body were brought (5745 ) unto the sick (5723 ) handkerchiefs or aprons , and the diseases departed (5745 ) from them , and the evil spirits went (5738 ) out of them . * Then certain of the vagabond (5740 ) Jews , exorcists , took upon them (5656 ) to call (5721 ) over them which had (5723 ) evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus , saying (5723 ), We adjure (5719 ) you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth (5719 ). * And there were (5713 ) seven sons of one Sceva , a Jew , and chief of the priests , which did (5723 ) so . * And the evil spirit answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ), Jesus I know (5719 ), and Paul I know (5736 ); but who are (5748 ) ye ? * And the man in whom the evil spirit was (5713 ) leaped (5740 ) on them , and overcame (5660 ) them , and prevailed (5656 ) against them , so that they fled (5629 ) out of that house naked and wounded (5772 ). * And this was (5633 ) known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling (5723 ) at Ephesus ; and fear fell (5627 ) on them all , and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified (5712 ). * And many that believed (5761 ) came (5711 ), and confessed (5734 ), and shewed (5723 ) their deeds . * Many of them also which used (5660 ) curious arts brought their books together (5631 ), and burned them (5707 ) before all men : and they counted (5656 ) the price of them , and found (5627 ) it fifty thousand pieces of silver . * So mightily grew (5707 ) the word of God and prevailed (5707 ). * After these things were ended (5681 ), Paul purposed (5639 ) in the spirit , when he had passed through (5631 ) Macedonia and Achaia , to go (5738 ) to Jerusalem , saying (5631 ), After I have been (5635 ) there , I must (5748 ) also see (5629 ) Rome . * So he sent (5660 ) into Macedonia two of them that ministered (5723 ) unto him , Timotheus and Erastus ; but he himself stayed (5627 ) in Asia for a season . * And the same time there arose (5633 ) no small stir about that way . * For a certain man named Demetrius , a silversmith , which made (5723 ) silver shrines for Diana , brought (5710 ) no small gain unto the craftsmen ; * Whom he called together (5660 ) with the workmen of like occupation , and said (5627 ), Sirs , ye know (5736 ) that by this craft we have (5748 ) our wealth . * Moreover ye see (5719 ) and hear (5719 ), that not alone at Ephesus , but almost throughout all Asia , this Paul hath persuaded (5660 ) and turned away (5656 ) much people , saying (5723 ) that they be (5748 ) no gods , which are made (5740 ) with hands : * So that not only this our craft is in danger (5719 ) to be set (5629 ) at nought ; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised (5683 ), and her magnificence should (5721 ) be destroyed (5745 ), whom all Asia and the world worshippeth (5736 ). * And when they heard (5660 ) these sayings , they were (5637 ) full of wrath , and cried out (5707 ), saying (5723 ), Great is Diana of the Ephesians . * And the whole city was filled (5681 ) with confusion : and having caught (5660 ) Gaius and Aristarchus , men of Macedonia , Pauls companions in travel , they rushed (5656 ) with one accord into the theatre . * And when Paul would (5740 ) have entered (5629 ) in unto the people , the disciples suffered (5707 ) him not . * And certain of the chief of Asia , which were (5752 ) his friends , sent (5660 ) unto him , desiring (5707 ) him that he would not adventure (5629 ) himself into the theatre . * Some therefore cried (5707 ) one thing , and some another : for the assembly was (5713 ) confused (5772 ); and the more part knew (5715 ) not wherefore they were come together (5715 ). * And they drew (5656 ) Alexander out of the multitude , the Jews putting him forward (5660 ) (5625 ) (5723 ). And Alexander beckoned (5660 ) with the hand , and would (5707 ) have made his defence (5738 ) unto the people . * But when they knew (5631 ) that he was (5748 ) a Jew , all (5633 ) with one voice about the space of two hours cried out (5723 ), Great is Diana of the Ephesians . * And when the townclerk had appeased (5660 ) the people , he said (5748 ), Ye men of Ephesus , what man is there (5748 ) that knoweth (5719 ) not how that the city of the Ephesians is (5752 ) a worshipper of the great goddess Diana , and of the image which fell down from Jupiter ? * Seeing (5752 ) then that these things cannot be spoken against , ye ought (5752 ) (5748 ) to be (5721 ) quiet (5772 ), and to do (5721 ) nothing rashly . * For ye have brought hither (5627 ) these men , which are neither robbers of churches , nor yet blasphemers (5723 ) of your goddess . * Wherefore if Demetrius , and the craftsmen which are with him , have (5719 ) a matter against any man , the law is open (5743 ), and there are (5748 ) deputies : let them implead (5720 ) one another . * But if ye enquire (5719 ) any thing concerning other matters , it shall be determined (5701 ) in a lawful assembly . * For we are in danger (5719 ) to be called in question (5745 ) for this days uproar , there being (5723 ) no cause whereby we may (5695 ) give (5629 ) an account of this concourse . * And when he had thus spoken (5631 ), he dismissed (5656 ) the assembly .
