* And as they spake (5723 ) unto the people , the priests , and the captain of the temple , and the Sadducees , came upon (5627 ) them , * Being grieved (5740 ) that they taught (5721 ) the people , and preached (5721 ) through Jesus the resurrection from the dead . * And they laid (5627 ) hands on them , and put (5639 ) them in hold unto the next day : for it was (5713 ) now eventide . * Howbeit many of them which heard (5660 ) the word believed (5656 ); and the number of the men was (5675 ) about five thousand . * And it came to pass (5633 ) on the morrow , that their rulers , and elders , and scribes , * And Annas the high priest , and Caiaphas , and John , and Alexander , and as many as were (5713 ) of the kindred of the high priest , were gathered together (5683 ) at Jerusalem . * And when they had set (5660 ) them in the midst , they asked (5711 ), By what power , or by what name , have ye done (5656 ) this ? * Then Peter , filled (5685 ) with the Holy Ghost , said (5627 ) unto them , Ye rulers of the people , and elders of Israel , * If we this day be examined (5743 ) of the good deed done to the impotent man , by what means he is made whole (5769 ); * Be it (5749 ) known unto you all , and to all the people of Israel , that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth , whom ye crucified (5656 ), whom God raised (5656 ) from the dead , even by him doth this man stand here (5758 ) before you whole . * This is (5748 ) the stone which was set at nought (5685 ) of you builders (5723 ), which is become (5637 ) the head of the corner . * Neither is there (5748 ) salvation in any other : for there is (5748 ) none other name under heaven given (5772 ) among men , whereby we must (5748 ) be saved (5683 ). * Now when they saw (5723 ) the boldness of Peter and John , and perceived (5642 ) that they were (5748 ) unlearned and ignorant men , they marvelled (5707 ); and they took knowledge (5707 ) of them , that they had been (5713 ) with Jesus . * And beholding (5723 ) the man which was healed (5772 ) standing (5761 ) with them , they could (5707 ) say nothing against it (5629 ). * But when they had commanded (5660 ) them to go aside (5629 ) out of the council , they conferred (5627 ) among themselves , * Saying (5723 ), What shall we do (5692 ) to these men ? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done (5754 ) by them is manifest to all them that dwell (5723 ) in Jerusalem ; and we cannot (5736 ) deny (5664 ) it . * But that it spread (5686 ) no further among the people , let us straitly threaten (5672 ) them , that they speak (5721 ) henceforth to no man in this name . * And they called (5660 ) them , and commanded (5656 ) them not to speak (5738 ) at all nor teach (5721 ) in the name of Jesus . * But Peter and John answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ) unto them , Whether it be (5748 ) right in the sight of God to hearken (5721 ) unto you more than unto God , judge ye (5657 ). * For we cannot (5736 ) but speak (5721 ) the things which we have seen (5627 ) and heard (5656 ). * So when they had further threatened them (5671 ), they let them go (5656 ), finding (5723 ) nothing how they might punish (5672 ) them , because of the people : for all men glorified (5707 ) God for that which was done (5756 ). * For the man was (5713 ) above forty years old , on whom this miracle of healing was shewed (5715 ). * And being let go (5685 ), they went (5627 ) to their own company , and reported (5656 ) all that the chief priests and elders had said (5627 ) unto them . * And when they heard that (5660 ), they lifted up (5656 ) their voice to God with one accord , and said (5627 ), Lord , thou art God , which hast made (5660 ) heaven , and earth , and the sea , and all that in them is : * Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said (5631 ), Why did the heathen rage (5656 ), and the people imagine (5656 ) vain things ? * The kings of the earth stood up (5656 ), and the rulers were gathered (5681 ) together against the Lord , and against his Christ . * For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus , whom thou hast anointed (5656 ), both Herod , and Pontius Pilate , with the Gentiles , and the people of Israel , were gathered together (5681 ), * For to do (5658 ) whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before (5656 ) to be done (5635 ). * And now , Lord , behold (5628 ) their threatenings : and grant unto (5628 ) thy servants , that with all boldness they may speak (5721 ) thy word , * By stretching forth (5721 ) thine hand to heal ; and that signs and wonders may be done (5738 ) by the name of thy holy child Jesus . * And when they had prayed (5679 ), the place was shaken (5681 ) where they were (5713 ) assembled together (5772 ); and they were all filled (5681 ) with the Holy Ghost , and they spake (5707 ) the word of God with boldness . * And the multitude of them that believed (5660 ) were (5713 ) of one heart and of one soul : neither said (5707 ) any of them that ought of the things which he possessed (5723 ) was (5750 ) his own ; but they had (5713 ) all things common . * And with great power gave (5707 ) the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus : and great grace was (5713 ) upon them all . * Neither was (5707 ) there any among them that lacked : for as many as were (5707 ) possessors of lands or houses sold them (5723 ), and brought (5707 ) the prices of the things that were sold (5746 ), * And laid them down (5707 ) at the apostles feet : and distribution was made (5712 ) unto every man according as he had (5707 ) need . * And Joses , who by the apostles was surnamed (5685 ) Barnabas , (which is (5748 ), being interpreted (5746 ), The son of consolation ,) a Levite , and of the country of Cyprus , * Having (5723 ) land , sold (5660 ) it , and brought (5656 ) the money , and laid (5656 ) it at the apostles feet .
