* But a certain man named Ananias , with Sapphira his wife , sold (5656 ) a possession , * And kept back (5668 ) part of the price , his wife also being privy (5761 ) to it , and brought (5660 ) a certain part , and laid (5656 ) it at the apostles feet . * But Peter said (5627 ), Ananias , why hath Satan filled (5656 ) thine heart to lie (5664 ) to the Holy Ghost , and to keep back (5670 ) part of the price of the land ? * Whiles it remained (5723 ), was it not thine own (5707 )? and after it was sold (5685 ), was it not (5707 ) in thine own power ? why hast thou conceived (5639 ) this thing in thine heart ? thou hast not lied (5662 ) unto men , but unto God . * And Ananias hearing (5723 ) these words fell down (5631 ), and gave up the ghost (5656 ): and great fear came (5633 ) on all them that heard (5723 ) these things . * And the young men arose (5631 ), wound him up (5656 ), and carried him out (5660 ), and buried (5656 ) him . * And it was (5633 ) about the space of three hours after , when his wife , not knowing (5761 ) what was done (5756 ), came in (5627 ). * And Peter answered (5662 ) unto her , Tell (5628 ) me whether ye sold (5639 ) the land for so much ? And she said (5627 ), Yea , for so much . * Then Peter said (5627 ) unto her , How is it that ye have agreed together (5681 ) to tempt (5658 ) the Spirit of the Lord ? behold (5628 ), the feet of them which have buried (5660 ) thy husband are at the door , and shall carry thee out (5692 ). * Then fell she down (5627 ) straightway at his feet , and yielded up the ghost (5656 ): and the young men came in (5631 ), and found (5627 ) her dead , and , carrying her forth (5660 ), buried (5656 ) her by her husband . * And great fear came (5633 ) upon all the church , and upon as many as heard (5723 ) these things . * And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought (5633 ) (5625 ) (5711 ) among the people ; (and they were (5713 ) all with one accord in Solomons porch . * And of the rest durst (5707 ) no man join himself (5745 ) to them : but the people magnified (5707 ) them . * And believers (5723 ) were the more added (5712 ) to the Lord , multitudes both of men and women .) * Insomuch that they brought forth (5721 ) the sick into the streets , and laid (5721 ) them on beds and couches , that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by (5740 ) might overshadow (5661 ) some of them . * There came (5711 ) also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem , bringing (5723 ) sick folks , and them which were vexed (5746 ) with unclean spirits : and they were healed (5712 ) every one . * Then the high priest rose up (5631 ), and all they that were with him , (which is (5752 ) the sect of the Sadducees ,) and were filled (5681 ) with indignation , * And laid (5627 ) their hands on the apostles , and put (5639 ) them in the common prison . * But the angel of the Lord by night opened (5656 ) the prison doors , and brought them forth (5631 ), and said (5627 ), * Go (5737 ), stand (5685 ) and speak (5720 ) in the temple to the people all the words of this life . * And when they heard (5660 ) that , they entered (5627 ) into the temple early in the morning , and taught (5707 ). But the high priest came (5637 ), and they that were with him , and called the council together (5656 ), and all the senate of the children of Israel , and sent (5656 ) to the prison to have them brought (5683 ). * But when the officers came (5637 ), and found (5627 ) them not in the prison , they returned (5660 ), and told (5656 ), * Saying (5723 ), The prison truly found we (5627 ) shut (5772 ) with all safety , and the keepers standing (5761 ) without before the doors : but when we had opened (5660 ), we found (5627 ) no man within . * Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard (5656 ) these things , they doubted (5707 ) of them whereunto this would grow (5636 ). * Then came (5637 ) one and told (5656 ) them , saying (5723 ), Behold (5628 ), the men whom ye put (5639 ) in prison are (5748 ) standing (5761 ) in the temple , and teaching (5723 ) the people . * Then went (5631 ) the captain with the officers , and brought (5627 ) them without violence : for they feared (5711 ) the people , lest they should have been stoned (5686 ). * And when they had brought (5631 ) them , they set (5627 ) them before the council : and the high priest asked (5656 ) them , * Saying (5723 ), Did not we straitly command (5656 ) you that ye should not teach (5721 ) in this name ? and , behold (5628 ), ye have filled (5758 ) Jerusalem with your doctrine , and intend (5736 ) to bring (5629 ) this mans blood upon us . * Then Peter and the other apostles answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ), We ought (5748 ) to obey (5721 ) God rather than men . * The God of our fathers raised up (5656 ) Jesus , whom ye slew (5668 ) and hanged (5660 ) on a tree . * Him hath God exalted (5656 ) with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour , for to give (5629 ) repentance to Israel , and forgiveness of sins . * And we are (5748 ) his witnesses of these things ; and so is also the Holy Ghost , whom God hath given (5656 ) to them that obey (5723 ) him . * When they heard (5660 ) that , they were cut (5712 ) to the heart , and took counsel (5711 ) to slay (5629 ) them . * Then stood there up (5631 ) one in the council , a Pharisee , named Gamaliel , a doctor of the law , had in reputation among all the people , and commanded (5656 ) to put (5658 ) the apostles forth a little space ; * And said (5627 ) unto them , Ye men of Israel , take heed (5720 ) to yourselves what ye intend (5719 ) to do (5721 ) as touching these men . * For before these days rose up (5627 ) Theudas , boasting (5723 ) himself to be (5750 ) somebody ; to whom a number of men , about four hundred , joined themselves (5681 ): who was slain (5681 ); and all , as many as obeyed (5712 ) him , were scattered (5681 ), and brought (5633 ) to nought . * After this man rose up (5627 ) Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing , and drew away (5656 ) much people after him : he also perished (5639 ); and all , even as many as obeyed (5712 ) him , were dispersed (5681 ). * And now I say (5719 ) unto you , Refrain (5628 ) from these men , and let them alone (5657 ): for if this counsel or this work be (5753 ) of men , it will come to nought (5701 ): * But if it be (5748 ) of God , ye cannot (5736 ) overthrow (5658 ) it ; lest haply ye be found (5686 ) even to fight against God . * And to him they agreed (5681 ): and when they had called (5666 ) the apostles , and beaten (5660 ) them , they commanded (5656 ) that they should not speak (5721 ) in the name of Jesus , and let them go (5656 ). * And they departed (5711 ) from the presence of the council , rejoicing (5723 ) that they were counted worthy (5681 ) to suffer shame (5683 ) for his name . * And daily in the temple , and in every house , they ceased (5710 ) not to teach (5723 ) and preach (5734 ) Jesus Christ .
