* Then said (5627 ) the high priest , Are (5719 ) these things so ? * And he said (5713 ), Men , brethren , and fathers , hearken (5657 ); The God of glory appeared (5681 ) unto our father Abraham , when he was (5752 ) in Mesopotamia , before he dwelt (5658 ) in Charran , * And said (5627 ) unto him , Get thee (5628 ) out of thy country , and from thy kindred , and come (5773 ) into the land which I shall shew (5692 ) thee . * Then came he (5631 ) out of the land of the Chaldaeans , and dwelt (5656 ) in Charran : and from thence , when his father was dead (5629 ), he removed (5656 ) him into this land , wherein ye now dwell (5719 ). * And he gave (5656 ) him none inheritance in it , no , not so much as to set his foot on : yet he promised (5662 ) that he would give (5629 ) it to him for a possession , and to his seed after him , when as yet he had (5752 ) no child . * And God spake (5656 ) on this wise , That his seed should (5704 ) sojourn in a strange land ; and that they should bring them into bondage (5692 ), and entreat them evil (5692 ) four hundred years . * And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage (5661 ) will I judge (5692 ), said (5627 ) God : and after that shall they come forth (5695 ), and serve (5692 ) me in this place . * And he gave (5656 ) him the covenant of circumcision : and so Abraham begat (5656 ) Isaac , and circumcised (5627 ) him the eighth day ; and Isaac begat Jacob ; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs . * And the patriarchs , moved with envy (5660 ), sold (5639 ) Joseph into Egypt : but God was (5713 ) with him , * And delivered (5639 ) him out of all his afflictions , and gave (5656 ) him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt ; and he made (5656 ) him governor (5740 ) over Egypt and all his house . * Now there came (5627 ) a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan , and great affliction : and our fathers found (5707 ) no sustenance . * But when Jacob heard (5660 ) that there was (5752 ) corn in Egypt , he sent out (5656 ) our fathers first . * And at the second time Joseph was made known (5681 ) to his brethren ; and Josephs kindred was made (5633 ) known unto Pharaoh . * Then sent (5660 ) Joseph , and called (5668 ) his father Jacob to him , and all his kindred , threescore and fifteen souls . * So Jacob went down (5627 ) into Egypt , and died (5656 ), he , and our fathers , * And were carried over (5681 ) into Sychem , and laid (5681 ) in the sepulchre that Abraham bought (5662 ) for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem . * But when the time of the promise drew nigh (5707 ), which God had sworn (5656 ) to Abraham , the people grew (5656 ) and multiplied (5681 ) in Egypt , * Till another king arose (5627 ), which knew (5715 ) not Joseph . * The same dealt subtilly (5666 ) with our kindred , and evil entreated (5656 ) our fathers , so that (5721 ) they cast out their young children , to the end they might not live (5745 ). * In which time Moses was born (5681 ), and was (5713 ) exceeding fair , and nourished up (5648 ) in his fathers house three months : * And when he was cast out (5685 ), Pharaohs daughter took him up (5639 ), and nourished (5668 ) him for her own son . * And Moses was learned (5681 ) in all the wisdom of the Egyptians , and was (5713 ) mighty in words and in deeds . * And when he was full (5712 ) forty years old , it came (5627 ) into his heart to visit (5664 ) his brethren the children of Israel . * And seeing (5631 ) one of them suffer wrong (5746 ), he defended (5662 ) him , and avenged (5656 ) him that was oppressed (5746 ), and smote (5660 ) the Egyptian : * For he supposed (5707 ) his brethren would have understood (5721 ) how that God by his hand would deliver (5719 ) them : but they understood (5656 ) not . * And the next (5752 ) day he shewed himself (5681 ) unto them as they strove (5736 ), and would have set (5656 ) them at one again , saying (5631 ), Sirs , ye are (5748 ) brethren ; why do ye wrong (5719 ) one to another ? * But he that did his neighbour wrong (5723 ) thrust him away (5662 ), saying (5631 ), Who made (5656 ) thee a ruler and a judge over us ? * Wilt (5719 ) thou kill (5629 ) me , as thou diddest (5627 ) the Egyptian yesterday ? * Then fled (5627 ) Moses at this saying , and was (5633 ) a stranger in the land of Madian , where he begat (5656 ) two sons . * And when forty years were expired (5685 ), there appeared (5681 ) to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush . * When Moses saw (5631 ) it , he wondered (5656 ) at the sight : and as he drew near (5740 ) to behold (5658 ) it , the voice of the Lord came (5633 ) unto him , * Saying , I am the God of thy fathers , the God of Abraham , and the God of Isaac , and the God of Jacob . Then Moses trembled (5637 ), and durst (5707 ) not behold (5658 ). * Then said (5627 ) the Lord to him , Put off (5657 ) thy shoes from thy feet : for the place where thou standest (5758 ) is (5748 ) holy ground . * I have seen (5631 ), I have seen (5627 ) the affliction of my people which is in Egypt , and I have heard (5656 ) their groaning , and am come down (5627 ) to deliver (5641 ) them . And now come (5773 ), I will send (5692 ) thee into Egypt . * This Moses whom they refused (5662 ), saying (5631 ), Who made (5656 ) thee a ruler and a judge ? the same did God send (5656 ) to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared (5685 ) to him in the bush . * He brought them out (5627 ), after that he had shewed (5660 ) wonders and signs in the land of Egypt , and in the Red sea , and in the wilderness forty years . * This is (5748 ) that Moses , which said (5631 ) unto the children of Israel , A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up (5692 ) unto you of your brethren , like unto me ; him shall ye hear (5695 ). * This is he (5748 ), that was (5637 ) in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake (5723 ) to him in the mount Sina , and with our fathers : who received (5662 ) the lively (5723 ) oracles to give (5629 ) unto us : * To whom our fathers would (5656 ) not obey (5635 ), but thrust him from them (5662 ), and in their hearts turned back again (5648 ) into Egypt , * Saying (5631 ) unto Aaron , Make (5657 ) us gods to go before (5695 ) us : for as for this Moses , which brought (5627 ) us out of the land of Egypt , we wot (5758 ) not what is become (5754 ) of him . * And they made a calf (5656 ) in those days , and offered (5627 ) sacrifice unto the idol , and rejoiced (5712 ) in the works of their own hands . * Then God turned (5656 ), and gave them up (5656 ) to worship (5721 ) the host of heaven ; as it is written (5769 ) in the book of the prophets , O ye house of Israel , have ye offered (5656 ) to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness ? * Yea , ye took up (5627 ) the tabernacle of Moloch , and the star of your god Remphan , figures which ye made (5656 ) to worship (5721 ) them : and I will carry you away (5692 ) beyond Babylon . * Our fathers had (5713 ) the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness , as he had appointed (5668 ), speaking (5723 ) unto Moses , that he should make (5658 ) it according to the fashion that he had seen (5715 ). * Which also our fathers that came (5666 ) after brought in (5627 ) with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles , whom God drave out (5656 ) before the face of our fathers , unto the days of David ; * Who found (5627 ) favour before God , and desired (5668 ) to find (5629 ) a tabernacle for the God of Jacob . * But Solomon built (5656 ) him an house . * Howbeit the most High dwelleth (5719 ) not in temples made with hands ; as saith (5719 ) the prophet , * Heaven is my throne , and earth is my footstool : what house will ye build (5692 ) me ? saith (5719 ) the Lord : or what is the place of my rest ? * Hath not my hand made (5656 ) all these things ? * Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears , ye do always resist (5719 ) the Holy Ghost : as your fathers did , so do ye . * Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted (5656 )? and they have slain (5656 ) them which shewed before (5660 ) of the coming of the Just One ; of whom ye have been (5769 ) now the betrayers and murderers : * Who have received (5627 ) the law by the disposition of angels , and have not kept (5656 ) it . * When they heard (5723 ) these things , they were cut (5712 ) to the heart , and they gnashed (5707 ) on him with their teeth . * But he , being (5723 ) full of the Holy Ghost , looked up stedfastly (5660 ) into heaven , and saw (5627 ) the glory of God , and Jesus standing (5761 ) on the right hand of God , * And said (5627 ), Behold (5628 ), I see (5719 ) the heavens opened (5772 ), and the Son of man standing (5761 ) on the right hand of God . * Then they cried out (5660 ) with a loud voice , and stopped (5627 ) their ears , and ran (5656 ) upon him with one accord , * And cast (5631 ) him out of the city , and stoned (5707 ) him : and the witnesses laid down (5639 ) their clothes at a young mans feet , whose name was (5746 ) Saul . * And they stoned (5707 ) Stephen , calling upon (5734 ) God , and saying (5723 ), Lord Jesus , receive (5663 ) my spirit . * And he kneeled down (5631 ), and cried (5656 ) with a loud voice , Lord , lay (5661 ) not this sin to their charge . And when he had said (5631 ) this , he fell asleep (5681 ).
