* By faith Abraham , when he was called (5746 ) to go out (5629 ) into a place which he should after (5707 ) receive (5721 ) for an inheritance , obeyed (5656 ); and he went out (5627 ), not knowing (5740 ) whither he went (5736 ). * By faith he sojourned (5656 ) in the land of promise , as in a strange country , dwelling (5660 ) in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob , the heirs with him of the same promise : * For he looked for (5711 ) a city which hath (5723 ) foundations , whose builder and maker is God . * Through faith also Sara herself received (5627 ) strength to conceive seed , and was delivered of a child (5627 ) when she was past age , because she judged (5662 ) him faithful who had promised (5666 ). * Therefore sprang there (5681 ) even of one , and him as good as dead (5772 ), so many as the stars of the sky in multitude , and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable . * These all died (5627 ) in faith , not having received (5631 ) the promises , but having seen (5631 ) them afar off , and were persuaded of (5685 ) them , and embraced (5666 ) them , and confessed (5660 ) that they were (5748 ) strangers and pilgrims on the earth . * For they that say (5723 ) such things declare plainly (5719 ) that they seek (5719 ) a country . * And truly , if they had been mindful (5707 ) of that country from whence they came out (5627 ), they might have had (5707 ) opportunity to have returned (5658 ). * But now they desire (5734 ) a better country , that is (5748 ), an heavenly : wherefore God is not ashamed (5736 ) to be called (5745 ) their God : for he hath prepared (5656 ) for them a city . * By faith Abraham , when he was tried (5746 ), offered up (5754 ) Isaac : and he that had received (5666 ) the promises offered up (5707 ) his only begotten son , * Of whom it was said (5681 ), That in Isaac shall thy seed be called (5701 ): * Accounting (5666 ) that God was able to raise him up (5721 ), even from the dead ; from whence also he received (5668 ) him in a figure . * By faith Isaac blessed (5656 ) Jacob and Esau concerning things to come (5723 ). * By faith Jacob , when he was a dying (5723 ), blessed (5656 ) both the sons of Joseph ; and worshipped (5656 ), leaning upon the top of his staff . * By faith Joseph , when he died (5723 ), made mention (5656 ) of the departing of the children of Israel ; and gave commandment (5662 ) concerning his bones . * By faith Moses , when he was born (5685 ), was hid (5648 ) three months of his parents , because they saw (5627 ) he was a proper child ; and they were not afraid (5675 ) of the kings commandment . * By faith Moses , when he was come (5637 ) to years , refused (5662 ) to be called (5745 ) the son of Pharaohs daughter ; * Choosing (5642 ) rather to suffer affliction (5738 ) with the people of God , than to enjoy the pleasures (5721 ) of sin for a season ; * Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than (5666 ) the treasures in Egypt : for he had respect (5707 ) unto the recompence of the reward . * By faith he forsook (5627 ) Egypt , not fearing (5679 ) the wrath of the king : for he endured (5656 ), as seeing (5723 ) him who is invisible . * Through faith he kept (5758 ) the passover , and the sprinkling of blood , lest he that destroyed (5723 ) the firstborn should touch (5632 ) them . * By faith they passed through (5627 ) the Red sea as by dry land : which the Egyptians assaying to do (5631 ) were drowned (5681 ). * By faith the walls of Jericho fell down (5627 ), after they were compassed (5685 ) about seven days . * By faith the harlot Rahab perished (5639 ) not with them that believed not (5660 ), when she had received (5666 ) the spies with peace . * And what shall I more say (5725 )? for the time would fail (5692 ) me to tell (5740 ) of Gedeon , and of Barak , and of Samson , and of Jephthae ; of David also , and Samuel , and of the prophets :
