* For this Melchisedec , king of Salem , priest of the most high God , who met (5660 ) Abraham returning (5723 ) from the slaughter of the kings , and blessed (5660 ) him ; * To whom also Abraham gave (5656 ) a tenth part of all ; first being by interpretation (5746 ) King of righteousness , and after that also King of Salem , which is (5748 ), King of peace ; * Without father , without mother , without descent , having (5723 ) neither beginning of days , nor end of life ; but made like (5772 ) unto the Son of God ; abideth (5719 ) a priest continually . * Now consider (5719 ) how great this man was , unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave (5656 ) the tenth of the spoils . * And verily they that are of the sons of Levi , who receive (5723 ) the office of the priesthood , have (5719 ) a commandment to take tithes (5721 ) of the people according to the law , that is (5748 ), of their brethren , though they come (5761 ) out of the loins of Abraham : * But he whose descent is not counted (5746 ) from them received tithes (5758 ) of Abraham , and blessed (5758 ) him that had (5723 ) the promises . * And without all contradiction the less is blessed (5743 ) of the better . * And here men that die (5723 ) receive (5719 ) tithes ; but there he receiveth them , of whom it is witnessed (5746 ) that he liveth (5719 ). * And as I may so say (5629 ), Levi also , who receiveth (5723 ) tithes , payed tithes (5769 ) in Abraham . * For he was (5713 ) yet in the loins of his father , when Melchisedec met (5656 ) him . * If therefore perfection were (5713 ) by the Levitical priesthood , (for under it the people received the law (5718 ),) what further need was there that another priest should rise (5733 ) after the order of Melchisedec , and not be called (5745 ) after the order of Aaron ? * For the priesthood being changed (5746 ), there is made (5736 ) of necessity a change also of the law . * For he of whom these things are spoken (5743 ) pertaineth (5758 ) to another tribe , of which no man gave attendance (5758 ) at the altar . * For it is evident that our Lord sprang (5758 ) out of Juda ; of which tribe Moses spake (5656 ) nothing concerning priesthood . * And it is (5748 ) yet far more evident : for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth (5731 ) another priest , * Who is made (5754 ), not after the law of a carnal commandment , but after the power of an endless life . * For he testifieth (5719 ), Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec . * For there is (5736 ) verily a disannulling of the commandment going before (5723 ) for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof . * For the law made nothing perfect (5656 ), but the bringing in of a better hope did ; by the which we draw nigh (5719 ) unto God . * And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest : * (For those priests were (5748 ) made (5756 ) without an oath ; but this with an oath by him that said (5723 ) unto him , The Lord sware (5656 ) and will not repent (5700 ), Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec :) * By so much was Jesus made (5754 ) a surety of a better testament . * And they truly were (5748 ) (5756 ) many priests , because they were not suffered (5745 ) to continue (5721 ) by reason of death : * But this man , because he continueth (5721 ) ever , hath (5719 ) an unchangeable priesthood . * Wherefore he is able (5736 ) also to save them (5721 ) to the uttermost that come (5740 ) unto God by him , seeing he ever liveth (5723 ) to make intercession (5721 ) for them . * For such an high priest became (5707 ) us , who is holy , harmless , undefiled , separate (5772 ) from sinners , and made (5637 ) higher than the heavens ; * Who needeth (5719 ) not daily , as those high priests , to offer up (5721 ) sacrifice , first for his own sins , and then for the peoples : for this he did (5656 ) once , when he offered up (5660 ) himself . * For the law maketh (5719 ) men high priests which have (5723 ) infirmity ; but the word of the oath , which was since the law , maketh the Son , who is consecrated (5772 ) for evermore .
