* Now a certain man was (5713 ) sick (5723 ), named Lazarus , of Bethany , the town of Mary and her sister Martha . * (It was (5713 ) that Mary which anointed (5660 ) the Lord with ointment , and wiped (5660 ) his feet with her hair , whose brother Lazarus was sick (5707 ).) * Therefore his sisters sent (5656 ) unto him , saying (5723 ), Lord , behold , he whom thou lovest (5719 ) is sick (5719 ). * When Jesus heard (5660 ) that , he said (5627 ), This sickness is (5748 ) not unto death , but for the glory of God , that the Son of God might be glorified (5686 ) thereby . * Now Jesus loved (5707 ) Martha , and her sister , and Lazarus . * When he had heard (5656 ) therefore that he was sick (5719 ), he abode (5656 ) two days still in the same place where he was (5713 ). * Then after that saith he (5719 ) to his disciples , Let us go (5725 ) into Judaea again . * His disciples say (5719 ) unto him , Master , the Jews of late sought (5707 ) to stone (5658 ) thee ; and goest thou (5719 ) thither again ? * Jesus answered (5662 ), Are there (5748 ) not twelve hours in the day ? If any man walk (5725 ) in the day , he stumbleth (5719 ) not , because he seeth (5719 ) the light of this world . * But if a man walk (5725 ) in the night , he stumbleth (5719 ), because there is (5748 ) no light in him . * These things said (5627 ) he : and after that he saith (5719 ) unto them , Our friend Lazarus sleepeth (5769 ); but I go (5736 ), that I may awake him out of sleep (5661 ). * Then said (5627 ) his disciples , Lord , if he sleep (5769 ), he shall do well (5701 ). * Howbeit Jesus spake (5715 ) of his death : but they thought (5656 ) that he had spoken (5719 ) of taking of rest in sleep . * Then said (5627 ) Jesus unto them plainly , Lazarus is dead (5627 ). * And I am glad (5719 ) for your sakes that I was (5713 ) (5625 ) (5713 ) not there , to the intent ye may believe (5661 ); nevertheless let us go (5725 ) unto him . * Then said (5627 ) Thomas , which is called (5746 ) Didymus , unto his fellowdisciples , Let us also go (5725 ), that we may die (5632 ) with him . * Then when Jesus came (5631 ), he found (5627 ) that he had (5723 ) lain in the grave four days already . * Now Bethany was (5713 ) nigh unto Jerusalem , about fifteen furlongs off : * And many of the Jews came (5715 ) to Martha and Mary , to comfort (5667 ) them concerning their brother . * Then Martha , as soon as she heard (5656 ) that Jesus was coming (5736 ), went and met (5656 ) him : but Mary sat (5711 ) still in the house . * Then said (5627 ) Martha unto Jesus , Lord , if thou hadst been (5713 ) here , my brother had not died (5715 ). * But I know (5758 ), that even now , whatsoever thou wilt ask (5672 ) of God , God will give (5692 ) it thee . * Jesus saith (5719 ) unto her , Thy brother shall rise again (5698 ). * Martha saith (5719 ) unto him , I know (5758 ) that he shall rise again (5698 ) in the resurrection at the last day . * Jesus said (5627 ) unto her , I am (5748 ) the resurrection , and the life : he that believeth (5723 ) in me , though he were dead (5632 ), yet shall he live (5695 ): * And whosoever liveth (5723 ) and believeth (5723 ) in me shall never die (5632 ). Believest thou (5719 ) this ? * She saith (5719 ) unto him , Yea , Lord : I believe (5758 ) that thou art (5748 ) the Christ , the Son of God , which should come (5740 ) into the world . * And when she had so said (5631 ), she went her way (5627 ), and called (5656 ) Mary her sister secretly , saying (5631 ), The Master is come (5748 ), and calleth for (5719 ) thee . * As soon as she heard (5656 ) that , she arose (5743 ) quickly , and came (5736 ) unto him . * Now Jesus was not yet come (5715 ) into the town , but was (5713 ) in that place where Martha met (5656 ) him . * The Jews then which were (5752 ) with her in the house , and comforted (5740 ) her , when they saw (5631 ) Mary , that she rose up (5627 ) hastily and went out (5627 ), followed (5656 ) her , saying (5723 ), She goeth (5719 ) unto the grave to weep (5661 ) there . * Then when Mary was come (5627 ) where Jesus was (5713 ), and saw (5631 ) him , she fell down (5627 ) at his feet , saying (5723 ) unto him , Lord , if thou hadst been (5713 ) here , my brother had not died (5627 ). * When Jesus therefore saw (5627 ) her weeping (5723 ), and the Jews also weeping (5723 ) which came (5631 ) with her , he groaned (5662 ) in the spirit , and was troubled (5656 ), * And said (5627 ), Where have ye laid (5758 ) him ? They said (5719 ) unto him , Lord , come (5736 ) and see (5657 ). * Jesus wept (5656 ). * Then said (5707 ) the Jews , Behold how he loved (5707 ) him ! * And some of them said (5627 ), Could (5711 ) not this man , which opened (5660 ) the eyes of the blind , have caused (5658 ) that even this man should not have died (5632 )? * Jesus therefore again groaning (5740 ) in himself cometh (5736 ) to the grave . It was (5713 ) a cave , and a stone lay (5711 ) upon it . * Jesus said (5719 ), Take ye away (5657 ) the stone . Martha , the sister of him that was dead (5761 ), saith (5719 ) unto him , Lord , by this time he stinketh (5719 ): for he hath been (5748 ) dead four days . * Jesus saith (5719 ) unto her , Said I (5627 ) not unto thee , that , if thou wouldest believe (5661 ), thou shouldest see (5695 ) the glory of God ? * Then they took away (5656 ) the stone from the place where the dead (5761 ) was (5713 ) laid (5740 ). And Jesus lifted (5656 ) up his eyes , and said (5627 ), Father , I thank (5719 ) thee that thou hast heard (5656 ) me . * And I knew (5715 ) that thou hearest (5719 ) me always : but because of the people which stand by (5761 ) I said (5627 ) it , that they may believe (5661 ) that thou hast sent (5656 ) me . * And when he thus had spoken (5631 ), he cried (5656 ) with a loud voice , Lazarus , come (5773 ) forth . * And he that was dead (5761 ) came forth (5627 ), bound (5772 ) hand and foot with graveclothes : and his face was bound about (5718 ) with a napkin . Jesus saith (5719 ) unto them , Loose (5657 ) him , and let him (5628 ) go (5721 ). * Then many of the Jews which came (5631 ) to Mary , and had seen (5666 ) the things which Jesus did (5656 ), believed (5656 ) on him . * But some of them went their ways (5627 ) to the Pharisees , and told (5627 ) them what things Jesus had done (5656 ). * Then gathered (5627 ) the chief priests and the Pharisees a council , and said (5707 ), What do we (5719 )? for this man doeth (5719 ) many miracles . * If we let him thus alone (5632 ), all men will believe (5692 ) on him : and the Romans shall come (5695 ) and take away (5692 ) both our place and nation . * And one of them , named Caiaphas , being (5752 ) the high priest that same year , said (5627 ) unto them , Ye know (5758 ) nothing at all , * Nor consider (5736 ) that it is expedient (5719 ) for us , that one man should die (5632 ) for the people , and that the whole nation perish (5643 ) not . * And this spake he (5627 ) not of himself : but being (5752 ) high priest that year , he prophesied (5656 ) that Jesus should (5707 ) die (5721 ) for that nation ; * And not for that nation only , but that also he should gather together (5632 ) in one the children of God that were scattered abroad (5772 ). * Then from that day forth they took counsel together (5668 ) for to put him to death (5725 ). * Jesus therefore walked (5707 ) no more openly among the Jews ; but went (5627 ) thence unto a country near to the wilderness , into a city called (5746 ) Ephraim , and there continued (5707 ) with his disciples . * And the Jews passover was (5713 ) nigh at hand : and many went (5627 ) out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover , to purify (5661 ) themselves . * Then sought they for (5707 ) Jesus , and spake (5707 ) among themselves , as they stood (5761 ) in the temple , What think (5719 ) ye , that he will not come (5632 ) to the feast ? * Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given (5715 ) a commandment , that , if any man knew (5632 ) where he were (5748 ), he should shew (5661 ) it , that they might take (5661 ) him .
