* When Jesus had spoken (5631 ) these words , he went forth (5627 ) with his disciples over the brook Cedron , where was (5713 ) a garden , into the which he entered (5627 ), and his disciples . * And Judas also , which betrayed (5723 ) him , knew (5715 ) the place : for Jesus ofttimes resorted (5681 ) thither with his disciples . * Judas then , having received (5631 ) a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees , cometh (5736 ) thither with lanterns and torches and weapons . * Jesus therefore , knowing (5761 ) all things that should come (5740 ) upon him , went forth (5631 ), and said (5627 ) unto them , Whom seek ye (5719 )? * They answered (5662 ) him , Jesus of Nazareth . Jesus saith (5719 ) unto them , I am (5748 ) he . And Judas also , which betrayed (5723 ) him , stood (5715 ) with them . * As soon then as he had said (5627 ) unto them , I am (5748 ) he , they went (5627 ) backward , and fell (5627 ) to the ground . * Then asked he (5656 ) them again , Whom seek ye (5719 )? And they said (5627 ), Jesus of Nazareth . * Jesus answered (5662 ), I have told (5627 ) you that I am (5748 ) he : if therefore ye seek (5719 ) me , let (5628 ) these go their way (5721 ): * That the saying might be fulfilled (5686 ), which he spake (5627 ), Of them which thou gavest (5758 ) me have I lost (5656 ) none . * Then Simon Peter having (5723 ) a sword drew (5656 ) it , and smote (5656 ) the high priests servant , and cut off (5656 ) his right ear . The servants name was (5713 ) Malchus . * Then said (5627 ) Jesus unto Peter , Put up (5628 ) thy sword into the sheath : the cup which my Father hath given (5758 ) me , shall I not drink (5632 ) it ? * Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took (5627 ) Jesus , and bound (5656 ) him , * And led him away (5627 ) to Annas first ; for he was (5713 ) father in law to Caiaphas , which was (5713 ) the high priest that same year . * Now Caiaphas was he (5713 ), which gave counsel (5660 ) to the Jews , that it was expedient (5719 ) that one man should die (5641 ) for the people . * And Simon Peter followed (5707 ) Jesus , and so did another disciple : that disciple was (5713 ) known unto the high priest , and went in with (5627 ) Jesus into the palace of the high priest . * But Peter stood (5715 ) at the door without . Then went out (5627 ) that other disciple , which was (5713 ) known unto the high priest , and spake (5627 ) unto her that kept the door , and brought in (5627 ) Peter . * Then saith (5719 ) the damsel that kept the door unto Peter , Art (5748 ) not thou also one of this mans disciples ? He saith (5719 ), I am (5748 ) not . * And the servants and officers stood there (5715 ), who had made (5761 ) a fire of coals ; for it was (5713 ) cold : and they warmed themselves (5711 ): and Peter stood (5713 ) (5761 ) with them , and warmed himself (5734 ). * The high priest then asked (5656 ) Jesus of his disciples , and of his doctrine . * Jesus answered (5662 ) him , I spake (5656 ) openly to the world ; I ever taught (5656 ) in the synagogue , and in the temple , whither the Jews always resort (5736 ); and in secret have I said (5656 ) nothing . * Why askest thou (5719 ) me ? ask (5657 ) them which heard me (5756 ), what I have said (5656 ) unto them : behold , they know (5758 ) what I said (5627 ). * And when he had thus spoken (5631 ), one of the officers which stood by (5761 ) struck # Jesus with the palm of his hand (5656 ), saying (5631 ), Answerest thou (5736 ) the high priest so ? * Jesus answered (5662 ) him , If I have spoken (5656 ) evil , bear witness (5657 ) of the evil : but if well , why smitest (5719 ) thou me ? * Now Annas had sent (5656 ) him bound (5772 ) unto Caiaphas the high priest . * And Simon Peter stood (5713 ) (5761 ) and warmed himself (5734 ). They said (5627 ) therefore unto him , Art (5748 ) not thou also one of his disciples ? He denied (5662 ) it , and said (5627 ), I am (5748 ) not . * One of the servants of the high priest , being (5752 ) his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off (5656 ), saith (5719 ), Did not I see (5627 ) thee in the garden with him ? * Peter then denied (5662 ) again : and immediately the cock crew (5656 ). * Then led they (5719 ) Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment : and it was (5713 ) early ; and they themselves went (5627 ) not into the judgment hall , lest they should be defiled (5686 ); but that they might eat (5632 ) the passover . * Pilate then went out (5627 ) unto them , and said (5627 ), What accusation bring ye (5719 ) against this man ? * They answered (5662 ) and said (5627 ) unto him , If he were (5713 ) not a malefactor , we would not have delivered him up (5656 ) unto thee . * Then said (5627 ) Pilate unto them , Take (5628 ) ye him , and judge (5657 ) him according to your law . The Jews therefore said (5627 ) unto him , It is not lawful (5748 ) for us to put any man to death (5658 ): * That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled (5686 ), which he spake (5627 ), signifying (5723 ) what death he should (5707 ) die (5721 ). * Then Pilate entered (5627 ) into the judgment hall again , and called (5656 ) Jesus , and said (5627 ) unto him , Art (5748 ) thou the King of the Jews ? * Jesus answered (5662 ) him , Sayest (5719 ) thou this thing of thyself , or did others tell it (5627 ) thee of me ? * Pilate answered (5662 ), Am (5748 ) I a Jew ? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered (5656 ) thee unto me : what hast thou done (5656 )? * Jesus answered (5662 ), My kingdom is (5748 ) not of this world : if my kingdom were (5713 ) of this world , then would my servants fight (5711 ), that I should not be delivered (5686 ) to the Jews : but now is (5748 ) my kingdom not from hence . * Pilate therefore said (5627 ) unto him , Art (5748 ) thou a king then ? Jesus answered (5662 ), Thou sayest (5719 ) that I am (5748 ) a king . To this end was I born (5769 ), and for this cause came I (5754 ) into the world , that I should bear witness (5661 ) unto the truth . Every one that is (5752 ) of the truth heareth (5719 ) my voice . * Pilate saith (5719 ) unto him , What is (5748 ) truth ? And when he had said (5631 ) this , he went out (5627 ) again unto the Jews , and saith (5719 ) unto them , I find (5719 ) in him no fault at all . * But ye have (5748 ) a custom , that I should release (5661 ) unto you one at the passover : will ye (5736 ) therefore that I release (5661 ) unto you the King of the Jews ? * Then cried they (5656 ) all again , saying (5723 ), Not this man , but Barabbas . Now Barabbas was (5713 ) a robber .
