* Forasmuch as many have taken in hand (5656 ) to set forth in order (5664 ) a declaration of those things which are most surely believed (5772 ) among us , * Even as they delivered (5627 ) them unto us , which from the beginning were (5637 ) eyewitnesses , and ministers of the word ; * It seemed (5656 ) good to me also , having had perfect understanding (5761 ) of all things from the very first , to write (5658 ) unto thee in order , most excellent Theophilus , * That thou mightest know (5632 ) the certainty of those things , wherein thou hast been instructed (5681 ). * There was (5633 ) in the days of Herod , the king of Judaea , a certain priest named Zacharias , of the course of Abia : and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron , and her name was Elisabeth . * And they were (5713 ) both righteous before God , walking (5740 ) in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless . * And they had (5713 ) no child , because that Elisabeth was (5713 ) barren , and they both were (5713 ) now well stricken (5761 ) in years . * And it came to pass (5633 ), that while he executed the priests office (5721 ) before God in the order of his course , * According to the custom of the priests office , his lot (5627 ) was to burn incense (5658 ) when he went (5631 ) into the temple of the Lord . * And the whole multitude of the people were (5713 ) praying (5740 ) without at the time of incense . * And there appeared (5681 ) unto him an angel of the Lord standing (5761 ) on the right side of the altar of incense . * And when Zacharias saw (5631 ) him , he was troubled (5681 ), and fear fell (5627 ) upon him . * But the angel said (5627 ) unto him , Fear (5737 ) not , Zacharias : for thy prayer is heard (5681 ); and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear (5692 ) thee a son , and thou shalt call (5692 ) his name John . * And thou shalt have (5704 ) joy and gladness ; and many shall rejoice (5690 ) at his birth . * For he shall be (5704 ) great in the sight of the Lord , and shall drink (5632 ) neither wine nor strong drink ; and he shall be filled (5701 ) with the Holy Ghost , even from his mothers womb . * And many of the children of Israel shall he turn (5692 ) to the Lord their God . * And he shall go (5695 ) before him in the spirit and power of Elias , to turn (5658 ) the hearts of the fathers to the children , and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just ; to make ready (5658 ) a people prepared (5772 ) for the Lord . * And Zacharias said (5627 ) unto the angel , Whereby shall I know (5695 ) this ? for I am (5748 ) an old man , and my wife well stricken (5761 ) in years . * And the angel answering (5679 ) said (5627 ) unto him , I am (5748 ) Gabriel , that stand (5761 ) in the presence of God ; and am sent (5648 ) to speak (5658 ) unto thee , and to shew thee these glad tidings (5670 ). * And , behold (5628 ), thou (5704 ) shalt be dumb (5723 ), and not able (5740 ) to speak (5658 ), until the day that these things shall be performed (5638 ), because thou believest (5656 ) not my words , which shall be fulfilled (5701 ) in their season . * And the people waited (5713 ) (5723 ) for Zacharias , and marvelled (5707 ) that he tarried so long (5721 ) in the temple . * And when he came out (5631 ), he could (5711 ) not speak (5658 ) unto them : and they perceived (5627 ) that he had seen (5758 ) a vision in the temple : for he beckoned (5713 ) (5723 ) unto them , and remained (5707 ) speechless . * And it came to pass (5633 ), that , as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished (5681 ), he departed (5627 ) to his own house . * And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived (5627 ), and hid (5707 ) herself five months , saying (5723 ), * Thus hath the Lord dealt (5758 ) with me in the days wherein he looked on (5627 ) me , to take away (5629 ) my reproach among men . * And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent (5648 ) from God unto a city of Galilee , named Nazareth , * To a virgin espoused (5772 ) to a man whose name was Joseph , of the house of David ; and the virgins name was Mary . * And the angel came in (5631 ) unto her , and said (5627 ), Hail (5720 ), thou that art highly favoured (5772 ), the Lord is with thee : blessed (5772 ) art thou among women . * And when she saw (5631 ) him , she was troubled (5681 ) at his saying , and cast in her mind (5711 ) what manner of salutation this should be (5751 ). * And the angel said (5627 ) unto her , Fear (5737 ) not , Mary : for thou hast found (5627 ) favour with God . * And , behold (5628 ), thou shalt conceive (5695 ) in thy womb , and bring forth (5695 ) a son , and shalt call (5692 ) his name JESUS . * He shall be (5704 ) great , and shall be called (5701 ) the Son of the Highest : and the Lord God shall give (5692 ) unto him the throne of his father David : * And he shall reign (5692 ) over the house of Jacob for ever ; and of his kingdom there shall be (5704 ) no end . * Then said (5627 ) Mary unto the angel , How shall this be (5704 ), seeing I know (5719 ) not a man ? * And the angel answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ) unto her , The Holy Ghost shall come (5695 ) upon thee , and the power of the Highest shall overshadow (5692 ) thee : therefore also that holy thing which shall be born (5746 ) of thee shall be called (5701 ) the Son of God . * And , behold (5628 ), thy cousin Elisabeth , she hath also conceived (5761 ) a son in her old age : and this is (5748 ) the sixth month with her , who was called (5746 ) barren . * For with God nothing shall be impossible (5692 ). * And Mary said (5627 ), Behold (5628 ) the handmaid of the Lord ; be it (5636 ) unto me according to thy word . And the angel departed (5627 ) from her . * And Mary arose (5631 ) in those days , and went (5675 ) into the hill country with haste , into a city of Juda ; * And entered (5627 ) into the house of Zacharias , and saluted (5662 ) Elisabeth . * And it came to pass (5633 ), that , when Elisabeth heard (5656 ) the salutation of Mary , the babe leaped (5656 ) in her womb ; and Elisabeth was filled (5681 ) with the Holy Ghost : * And she spake out (5656 ) with a loud voice , and said (5627 ), Blessed (5772 ) art thou among women , and blessed (5772 ) is the fruit of thy womb . * And whence is this to me , that the mother of my Lord should come (5632 ) to me ? * For , lo (5628 ), as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded (5633 ) in mine ears , the babe leaped (5656 ) in my womb for joy . * And blessed is she that believed (5660 ): for there shall be (5704 ) a performance of those things which were told (5772 ) her from the Lord . * And Mary said (5627 ), My soul doth magnify (5719 ) the Lord , * And my spirit hath rejoiced (5656 ) in God my Saviour . * For he hath regarded (5656 ) the low estate of his handmaiden : for , behold (5628 ), from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed (5692 ). * For he that is mighty hath done (5656 ) to me great things ; and holy is his name . * And his mercy is on them that fear (5740 ) him from generation to generation . * He hath shewed (5656 ) strength with his arm ; he hath scattered (5656 ) the proud in the imagination of their hearts . * He hath put down (5627 ) the mighty from their seats , and exalted (5656 ) them of low degree . * He hath filled (5656 ) the hungry (5723 ) with good things ; and the rich (5723 ) he hath sent empty away (5656 ). * He hath holpen (5633 ) his servant Israel , in remembrance (5683 ) of his mercy ; * As he spake (5656 ) to our fathers , to Abraham , and to his seed for ever . * And Mary abode (5656 ) with her about three months , and returned (5656 ) to her own house . * Now Elisabeths full time came (5681 ) that she should be delivered (5629 ); and she brought forth (5656 ) a son . * And her neighbours and her cousins heard (5656 ) how the Lord had shewed great (5707 ) mercy upon her ; and they rejoiced (5707 ) with her . * And it came to pass (5633 ), that on the eighth day they came (5627 ) to circumcise (5629 ) the child ; and they called (5707 ) him Zacharias , after the name of his father . * And his mother answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ), Not so ; but he shall be called (5701 ) John . * And they said (5627 ) unto her , There is (5748 ) none of thy kindred that is called (5743 ) by this name . * And they made signs (5707 ) to his father , how he would have (5722 ) him called (5745 ). * And he asked for (5660 ) a writing table , and wrote (5656 ), saying (5723 ), His name is (5748 ) John . And they marvelled (5656 ) all . * And his mouth was opened (5681 ) immediately , and his tongue loosed , and he spake (5707 ), and praised (5723 ) God . * And fear came (5633 ) on all that dwelt round about (5723 ) them : and all these sayings were noised abroad (5712 ) throughout all the hill country of Judaea . * And all they that heard (5660 ) them laid them up (5639 ) in their hearts , saying (5723 ), What manner of child shall this be (5704 )! And the hand of the Lord was (5713 ) with him . * And his father Zacharias was filled (5681 ) with the Holy Ghost , and prophesied (5656 ), saying (5723 ), * Blessed be the Lord God of Israel ; for he hath visited (5662 ) and redeemed his people (5656 ), * And hath raised up (5656 ) an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David ; * As he spake (5656 ) by the mouth of his holy prophets , which have been since the world began : * That we should be saved from our enemies , and from the hand of all that hate (5723 ) us ; * To perform (5658 ) the mercy promised to our fathers , and to remember (5683 ) his holy covenant ; * The oath which he sware (5656 ) to our father Abraham , * That he would grant (5629 ) unto us , that we being delivered (5685 ) out of the hand of our enemies might serve (5721 ) him without fear , * In holiness and righteousness before him , all the days of our life . * And thou , child , shalt be called (5701 ) the prophet of the Highest : for thou shalt go (5695 ) before the face of the Lord to prepare (5658 ) his ways ; * To give (5629 ) knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins , * Through the tender mercy of our God ; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited (5662 ) us , * To give light (5658 ) to them that sit (5740 ) in darkness and in the shadow of death , to guide (5658 ) our feet into the way of peace . * And the child grew (5707 ), and waxed strong (5712 ) in spirit , and was (5713 ) in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel .
