* And it came to pass (5633 ), that , as he was (5750 ) praying (5740 ) in a certain place , when he ceased (5668 ), one of his disciples said (5627 ) unto him , Lord , teach (5657 ) us to pray (5738 ), as John also taught (5656 ) his disciples . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , When ye pray (5741 ), say (5720 ), Our Father which art in heaven , Hallowed be (5682 ) thy name . Thy kingdom come (5628 ). Thy will be done (5676 ), as in heaven , so in earth . * Give (5720 ) us day by day our daily bread . * And forgive (5628 ) us our sins ; for we also forgive (5719 ) every one that is indebted (5723 ) to us . And lead (5661 ) us not into temptation ; but deliver (5663 ) us from evil . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , Which of you shall have (5692 ) a friend , and shall go (5695 ) unto him at midnight , and say (5632 ) unto him , Friend , lend (5657 ) me three loaves ; * For a friend of mine in his journey is come (5633 ) to me , and I have (5719 ) nothing to set before (5692 ) him ? * And he from within shall answer (5679 ) and say (5632 ), Trouble (5720 ) me not : the door is now shut (5769 ), and my children are (5748 ) with me in bed ; I cannot (5736 ) rise (5631 ) and give (5629 ) thee . * I say (5719 ) unto you , Though he will not rise (5685 ) and give (5692 ) him , because he is (5750 ) his friend , yet because of his importunity he will rise (5631 ) and give (5692 ) him as many as he needeth (5719 ). * And I say (5719 ) unto you , Ask (5720 ), and it shall be given (5701 ) you ; seek (5720 ), and ye shall find (5692 ); knock (5720 ), and it shall be opened (5691 ) unto you . * For every one that asketh (5723 ) receiveth (5719 ); and he that seeketh (5723 ) findeth (5719 ); and to him that knocketh (5723 ) it shall be opened (5691 ). * If a son shall ask (5692 ) bread of any of you that is a father , will he give (5692 ) him a stone ? or if he ask a fish , will he for a fish give (5692 ) him a serpent ? * Or if he shall ask (5661 ) an egg , will he offer (5692 ) him a scorpion ? * If ye then , being (5723 ) evil , know (5758 ) how to give (5721 ) good gifts unto your children : how much more shall your heavenly Father give (5692 ) the Holy Spirit to them that ask (5723 ) him ? * And he was (5713 ) casting out (5723 ) a devil , and it was (5713 ) dumb . And it came to pass (5633 ), when the devil was gone out (5631 ), the dumb spake (5656 ); and the people wondered (5656 ). * But some of them said (5627 ), He casteth out (5719 ) devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils . * And others , tempting (5723 ) him , sought (5707 ) of him a sign from heaven . * But he , knowing (5761 ) their thoughts , said (5627 ) unto them , Every kingdom divided (5685 ) against itself is brought to desolation (5743 ); and a house divided against a house falleth (5719 ). * If Satan also be divided (5681 ) against himself , how shall his kingdom stand (5701 )? because ye say (5719 ) that I cast out (5721 ) devils through Beelzebub . * And if I by Beelzebub cast out (5719 ) devils , by whom do your sons cast them out (5719 )? therefore shall they be (5704 ) your judges . * But if I with the finger of God cast out (5719 ) devils , no doubt the kingdom of God is come (5656 ) upon you . * When a strong man armed (5772 ) keepeth (5725 ) his palace , his goods (5723 ) are (5748 ) in peace : * But when a stronger than he shall come upon him (5631 ), and overcome (5661 ) him , he taketh (5719 ) from him all his armour wherein he trusted (5714 ), and divideth (5719 ) his spoils . * He that is (5752 ) not with me is (5748 ) against me : and he that gathereth (5723 ) not with me scattereth (5719 ). * When the unclean spirit is gone (5632 ) out of a man , he walketh (5736 ) through dry places , seeking (5723 ) rest ; and finding (5723 ) none , he saith (5719 ), I will return (5692 ) unto my house whence I came out (5627 ). * And when he cometh (5631 ), he findeth (5719 ) it swept (5772 ) and garnished (5772 ). * Then goeth he (5736 ), and taketh (5719 ) to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself ; and they enter in (5631 ), and dwell (5719 ) there : and the last state of that man is (5736 ) worse than the first . * And it came to pass (5633 ), as he spake (5721 ) these things , a certain woman of the company lifted up (5660 ) her voice , and said (5627 ) unto him , Blessed is the womb that bare (5660 ) thee , and the paps which thou hast sucked (5656 ). * But he said (5627 ), Yea rather , blessed are they that hear (5723 ) the word of God , and keep (5723 ) it . * And when the people were gathered thick together (5746 ), he began (5662 ) to say (5721 ), This is (5748 ) an evil generation : they seek (5719 ) a sign ; and there shall no sign be given (5701 ) it , but the sign of Jonas the prophet . * For as Jonas was (5633 ) a sign unto the Ninevites , so shall also the Son of man be (5704 ) to this generation . * The queen of the south shall rise up (5701 ) in the judgment with the men of this generation , and condemn (5692 ) them : for she came (5627 ) from the utmost parts of the earth to hear (5658 ) the wisdom of Solomon ; and , behold (5628 ), a greater than Solomon is here . * The men of Nineve shall rise up (5698 ) in the judgment with this generation , and shall condemn (5692 ) it : for they repented (5656 ) at the preaching of Jonas ; and , behold (5628 ), a greater than Jonas is here . * No man , when he hath lighted (5660 ) a candle , putteth (5719 ) it in a secret place , neither under a bushel , but on a candlestick , that they which come in (5740 ) may see (5725 ) the light . * The light of the body is (5748 ) the eye : therefore when thine eye is (5753 ) single , thy whole body also is (5748 ) full of light ; but when thine eye is (5753 ) evil , thy body also is full of darkness . * Take heed (5720 ) therefore that the light which is in thee be (5748 ) not darkness . * If thy whole body therefore be full of light , having (5723 ) no part dark , the whole shall be (5704 ) full of light , as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light (5725 ). * And as he spake (5658 ), a certain Pharisee besought (5707 ) him to dine (5661 ) with him : and he went in (5631 ), and sat down to meat (5627 ). * And when the Pharisee saw (5631 ) it , he marvelled (5656 ) that he had not first washed (5681 ) before dinner . * And the Lord said (5627 ) unto him , Now do ye Pharisees make clean (5719 ) the outside of the cup and the platter ; but your inward part is full (5719 ) of ravening and wickedness . * Ye fools , did not he that made (5660 ) that which is without make (5656 ) that which is within also ? * But rather give (5628 ) alms of such things as ye have (5752 ); and , behold (5628 ), all things are (5748 ) clean unto you . * But woe unto you , Pharisees ! for ye tithe (5719 ) mint and rue and all manner of herbs , and pass over (5736 ) judgment and the love of God : these ought ye (5713 ) to have done (5658 ), and not to leave the other undone (5721 ). * Woe unto you , Pharisees ! for ye love (5719 ) the uppermost seats in the synagogues , and greetings in the markets . * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye are (5748 ) as graves which appear not , and the men that walk (5723 ) over them are not aware (5758 ) of them . * Then answered (5679 ) one of the lawyers , and said (5719 ) unto him , Master , thus saying (5723 ) thou reproachest (5719 ) us also . * And he said (5627 ), Woe unto you also , ye lawyers ! for ye lade (5719 ) men with burdens grievous to be borne , and ye yourselves touch (5719 ) not the burdens with one of your fingers . * Woe unto you ! for ye build (5719 ) the sepulchres of the prophets , and your fathers killed (5656 ) them . * Truly ye bear witness (5719 ) that ye allow (5719 ) the deeds of your fathers : for they indeed killed (5656 ) them , and ye build (5719 ) their sepulchres . * Therefore also said (5627 ) the wisdom of God , I will send (5692 ) them prophets and apostles , and some of them they shall slay (5692 ) and persecute (5692 ): * That the blood of all the prophets , which was shed (5746 ) from the foundation of the world , may be required (5686 ) of this generation ; * From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias , which perished (5642 ) between the altar and the temple : verily I say (5719 ) unto you , It shall be required (5701 ) of this generation . * Woe unto you , lawyers ! for ye have taken away (5656 ) the key of knowledge : ye entered not in (5627 ) yourselves , and them that were entering in (5740 ) ye hindered (5656 ). * And as he said (5723 ) these things unto them , the scribes and the Pharisees began (5662 ) to urge (5721 ) him vehemently , and to provoke him to speak (5721 ) of many things : * Laying wait for (5723 ) him , and seeking (5723 ) to catch (5658 ) something out of his mouth , that they might accuse (5661 ) him .
