* And it came to pass (5633 ) in those days , that there went out (5627 ) a decree from Caesar Augustus , that all the world should be taxed (5729 ). * (And this taxing was first made (5633 ) when Cyrenius was governor (5723 ) of Syria .) * And all went (5711 ) to be taxed (5745 ), every one into his own city . * And Joseph also went up (5627 ) from Galilee , out of the city of Nazareth , into Judaea , unto the city of David , which is called (5743 ) Bethlehem ; (because he was (5750 ) of the house and lineage of David :) * To be taxed (5670 ) with Mary his espoused (5772 ) wife , being (5752 ) great with child . * And so it was (5633 ), that , while they were (5750 ) there , the days were accomplished (5681 ) that she should be delivered (5629 ). * And she brought forth (5627 ) her firstborn son , and wrapped him in swaddling clothes (5656 ), and laid (5656 ) him in a manger ; because there was (5713 ) no room for them in the inn . * And there were (5713 ) in the same country shepherds abiding in the field (5723 ), keeping (5723 ) watch over their flock by night . * And , lo (5628 ), the angel of the Lord came upon (5627 ) them , and the glory of the Lord shone round about (5656 ) them : and they were sore afraid (5675 ). * And the angel said (5627 ) unto them , Fear (5737 ) not : for , behold (5628 ), I bring you good tidings (5731 ) of great joy , which shall be (5704 ) to all people . * For unto you is born (5681 ) this day in the city of David a Saviour , which is (5748 ) Christ the Lord . * And this shall be a sign unto you ; * (As it is written (5769 ) in the law of the Lord , Every male that openeth (5723 ) the womb shall be called (5701 ) holy to the Lord ;) * And to offer (5629 ) a sacrifice according to that which is said (5772 ) in the law of the Lord , A pair of turtledoves , or two young pigeons . * And , behold (5628 ), there was (5713 ) a man in Jerusalem , whose name was Simeon ; and the same man was just and devout , waiting (5740 ) for the consolation of Israel : and the Holy Ghost was (5713 ) upon him . * And it was (5713 ) revealed (5772 ) unto him by the Holy Ghost , that he should not see (5629 ) death , before he had seen (5632 ) the Lords Christ . * And he came (5627 ) by the Spirit into the temple : and when the parents brought (5629 ) in the child Jesus , to do (5658 ) for him after the custom (5772 ) of the law , * Then took he him up (5662 ) in his arms , and blessed (5656 ) God , and said (5627 ), * Lord , now lettest thou thy servant depart (5719 ) in peace , according to thy word : * For mine eyes have seen (5627 ) thy salvation , * Which thou hast prepared (5656 ) before the face of all people ; * A light to lighten the Gentiles , and the glory of thy people Israel . * And Joseph and his mother marvelled (5713 ) (5723 ) at those things which were spoken (5746 ) of him . * And Simeon blessed (5656 ) them , and said (5627 ) unto Mary his mother , Behold (5628 ), this child is set (5736 ) for the fall and rising again of many in Israel ; and for a sign which shall be spoken against (5746 ); * (Yea , a sword shall pierce through (5695 ) thy own soul also ,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (5686 ). * And there was (5713 ) one Anna , a prophetess , the daughter of Phanuel , of the tribe of Aser : she (5625 ) was of a great age (5761 ), and had lived (5660 ) with an husband seven years from her virginity ; * And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years , which departed (5711 ) not from the temple , but served (5723 ) God with fastings and prayers night and day . * And she (5625 ) coming in (5631 ) that instant gave thanks likewise (5711 ) unto the Lord , and spake (5707 ) of him to all them that looked (5740 ) for redemption in Jerusalem . * And when they had performed (5656 ) all things according to the law of the Lord , they returned (5656 ) into Galilee , to their own city Nazareth . * And the child grew (5707 ), and waxed strong (5712 ) in spirit , filled (5746 ) with wisdom : and the grace of God was (5713 ) upon him . * Now his parents went (5711 ) to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover . * And when he was (5633 ) twelve years old , they went up (5631 ) to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast . * And when they had fulfilled (5660 ) the days , as they returned (5721 ), the child Jesus tarried behind (5656 ) in Jerusalem ; and Joseph and his mother knew (5627 ) not of it . * But they , supposing (5660 ) him to have been (5750 ) in the company , went (5627 ) a days journey ; and they sought (5707 ) him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance . * And when they found (5631 ) him not , they turned back again (5656 ) to Jerusalem , seeking (5723 ) him . * And it came to pass (5633 ), that after three days they found (5627 ) him in the temple , sitting (5740 ) in the midst of the doctors , both hearing (5723 ) them , and asking them questions (5723 ). * And all that heard (5723 ) him were astonished (5710 ) at his understanding and answers . * And when they saw (5631 ) him , they were amazed (5648 ): and his mother said (5627 ) unto him , Son , why hast thou thus dealt (5656 ) with us ? behold (5628 ), thy father and I have sought (5707 ) thee sorrowing (5746 ). * And he said (5627 ) unto them , How is it that ye sought (5707 ) me ? wist ye (5715 ) not that I must (5748 ) be (5750 ) about my Fathers business ? * And they understood (5656 ) not the saying which he spake (5656 ) unto them . * And he went down (5627 ) with them , and came (5627 ) to Nazareth , and was (5713 ) subject (5746 ) unto them : but his mother kept (5707 ) all these sayings in her heart . * And Jesus increased (5707 ) in wisdom and stature , and in favour with God and man .
