* And it came to pass (5633 ), that on one of those days , as he taught (5723 ) the people in the temple , and preached the gospel (5734 ), the chief priests and the scribes came upon (5627 ) him with the elders , * And spake (5627 ) unto him , saying (5723 ), Tell (5628 ) us , by what authority doest thou (5719 ) these things ? or who is he (5748 ) that gave (5631 ) thee this authority ? * And he answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ) unto them , I will also ask (5692 ) you one thing ; and answer (5628 ) me : * The baptism of John , was it (5713 ) from heaven , or of men ? * And they reasoned (5662 ) with themselves , saying (5723 ), If we shall say (5632 ), From heaven ; he will say (5692 ), Why then believed ye (5656 ) him not ? * But and if we say (5632 ), Of men ; all the people will stone (5692 ) us : for they be (5748 ) persuaded (5772 ) that John was (5750 ) a prophet . * And they answered (5662 ), that they could not tell (5760 ) whence it was . * And Jesus said (5627 ) unto them , Neither tell (5719 ) I you by what authority I do (5719 ) these things . * Then began he (5662 ) to speak (5721 ) to the people this parable ; A certain man planted (5656 ) a vineyard , and let it forth (5639 ) to husbandmen , and went into a far country (5656 ) for a long time . * And at the season he sent (5656 ) a servant to the husbandmen , that they should give (5632 ) him of the fruit of the vineyard : but the husbandmen beat (5660 ) him , and sent him away (5656 ) empty . * And again (5639 ) he sent (5658 ) another servant : and they beat (5660 ) him also , and entreated him shamefully (5660 ), and sent him away (5656 ) empty . * And again (5639 ) he sent (5658 ) a third : and they wounded (5660 ) him also , and cast him out (5627 ). * Then said (5627 ) the lord of the vineyard , What shall I do (5661 )? I will send (5692 ) my beloved son : it may be they will reverence (5691 ) him when they see (5631 ) him . * But when the husbandmen saw (5631 ) him , they reasoned (5711 ) among themselves , saying (5723 ), This is (5748 ) the heir : come (5773 ), let us kill (5725 ) him , that the inheritance may be (5638 ) ours . * So they cast (5631 ) him out of the vineyard , and killed (5656 ) him . What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do (5692 ) unto them ? * He shall come (5695 ) and destroy (5692 ) these husbandmen , and shall give (5692 ) the vineyard to others . And when they heard (5660 ) it , they said (5627 ), God forbid (5636 ). * And he beheld (5660 ) them , and said (5627 ), What is (5748 ) this then that is written (5772 ), The stone which the builders (5723 ) rejected (5656 ), the same is become (5675 ) the head of the corner ? * Whosoever shall fall (5631 ) upon that stone shall be broken (5701 ); but on whomsoever it shall fall (5632 ), it will grind him to powder (5692 ). * And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought (5656 ) to lay (5629 ) hands on him ; and they feared (5675 ) the people : for they perceived (5627 ) that he had spoken (5627 ) this parable against them . * And they watched (5660 ) him , and sent forth (5656 ) spies , which should feign (5740 ) (5750 ) themselves just men , that they might take hold (5638 ) of his words , that so they might deliver (5629 ) him unto the power and authority of the governor . * And they asked (5656 ) him , saying (5723 ), Master , we know (5758 ) that thou sayest (5719 ) and teachest (5719 ) rightly , neither acceptest thou (5719 ) the person of any , but teachest (5719 ) the way of God truly : * Is it lawful (5748 ) for us to give (5629 ) tribute unto Caesar , or no ? * But he perceived (5660 ) their craftiness , and said (5627 ) unto them , Why tempt ye (5719 ) me ? * Shew (5657 ) me a penny . Whose image and superscription hath it (5719 )? They answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ), Caesars . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , Render (5628 ) therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesars , and unto God the things which be Gods . * And they could (5656 ) not take hold (5635 ) of his words before the people : and they marvelled (5660 ) at his answer , and held their peace (5656 ). * Then came (5631 ) to him certain of the Sadducees , which deny (5723 ) that there is (5750 ) any resurrection ; and they asked (5656 ) him , * Saying (5723 ), Master , Moses wrote (5656 ) unto us , If any mans brother die (5632 ), having (5723 ) a wife , and he die (5632 ) without children , that his brother should take (5632 ) his wife , and raise up (5661 ) seed unto his brother . * There were (5713 ) therefore seven brethren : and the first took (5631 ) a wife , and died (5627 ) without children . * And the second took (5627 ) her to wife , and he died (5627 ) childless . * And the third took (5627 ) her ; and in like manner the seven also : and they left (5627 ) no children , and died (5627 ). * Last of all the woman died (5627 ) also . * Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she (5736 )? for seven had (5627 ) her to wife . * And Jesus answering (5679 ) said (5627 ) unto them , The children of this world marry (5719 ), and are given in marriage (5743 ): * But they which shall be accounted worthy (5685 ) to obtain (5629 ) that world , and the resurrection from the dead , neither marry (5719 ), nor are given in marriage (5743 ): * Neither can (5736 ) they die (5629 ) any more : for they are (5748 ) equal unto the angels ; and are (5748 ) the children of God , being (5752 ) the children of the resurrection . * Now that the dead are raised (5743 ), even Moses shewed (5656 ) at the bush , when he calleth (5719 ) the Lord the God of Abraham , and the God of Isaac , and the God of Jacob . * For he is (5748 ) not a God of the dead , but of the living (5723 ): for all live (5719 ) unto him . * Then certain of the scribes answering (5679 ) said (5627 ), Master , thou hast well said (5627 ). * And after that they durst (5707 ) not ask (5721 ) him any question at all . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , How say (5719 ) they that Christ is (5750 ) Davids son ? * And David himself saith (5719 ) in the book of Psalms , The LORD said (5627 ) unto my Lord , Sit thou (5737 ) on my right hand , * Till I make (5632 ) thine enemies thy footstool . * David therefore calleth (5719 ) him Lord , how is he (5748 ) then his son ? * Then in the audience (5723 ) of all the people he said (5627 ) unto his disciples , * Beware (5720 ) of the scribes , which desire (5723 ) to walk (5721 ) in long robes , and love (5723 ) greetings in the markets , and the highest seats in the synagogues , and the chief rooms at feasts ; * Which devour (5719 ) widows houses , and for a shew make long prayers (5736 ): the same shall receive (5695 ) greater damnation .
