* Now upon the first day of the week , very early in the morning , they came (5627 ) unto the sepulchre , bringing (5723 ) the spices which they had prepared (5656 ), and certain others with them . * And they found (5627 ) the stone rolled away (5772 ) from the sepulchre . * And they entered in (5631 ), and found (5627 ) not the body of the Lord Jesus . * And it came to pass (5633 ), as they were much perplexed (5745 ) thereabout , behold (5628 ), two men stood by (5627 ) them in shining (5723 ) garments : * And as they were (5637 ) afraid , and bowed down (5723 ) their faces to the earth , they said (5627 ) unto them , Why seek ye (5719 ) the living (5723 ) among the dead ? * He is (5748 ) not here , but is risen (5681 ): remember (5682 ) how he spake (5656 ) unto you when he was (5752 ) yet in Galilee , * Saying (5723 ), The Son of man must (5748 ) be delivered (5683 ) into the hands of sinful men , and be crucified (5683 ), and the third day rise again (5629 ). * And they remembered (5681 ) his words , * And returned (5660 ) from the sepulchre , and told (5656 ) all these things unto the eleven , and to all the rest . * It was (5713 ) Mary Magdalene , and Joanna , and Mary the mother of James , and other women that were with them , which told (5707 ) these things unto the apostles . * And their words seemed (5648 ) to them as idle tales , and they believed them not (5707 ). * Then arose (5631 ) Peter , and ran (5627 ) unto the sepulchre ; and stooping down (5660 ), he beheld (5719 ) the linen clothes laid (5740 ) by themselves , and departed (5627 ), wondering (5723 ) in himself at that which was come to pass (5756 ). * And , behold (5628 ), two of them went (5713 ) (5740 ) that same day to a village called Emmaus , which was (5723 ) from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs . * And they talked (5707 ) together of all these things which had happened (5761 ). * And it came to pass (5633 ), that , while they communed (5721 ) together and reasoned (5721 ), Jesus himself drew near (5660 ), and went with (5711 ) them . * But their eyes were holden (5712 ) that they should not know (5629 ) him . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , What manner of communications are these that ye have (5719 ) one to another , as ye walk (5723 ), and are (5748 ) sad ? * And the one of them , whose name was Cleopas , answering (5679 ) said (5627 ) unto him , Art thou only a stranger (5719 ) in Jerusalem , and hast not known (5627 ) the things which are come to pass (5637 ) there in these days ? * And he said (5627 ) unto them , What things ? And they said (5627 ) unto him , Concerning Jesus of Nazareth , which was (5633 ) a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people : * And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered (5656 ) him to be condemned to death , and have crucified (5656 ) him . * But we trusted (5707 ) that it had been (5748 ) he which should (5723 ) have redeemed (5733 ) Israel : and beside all this , to day is (5719 ) the third day since these things were done (5633 ). * Yea , and certain women also of our company made us astonished (5627 ), which were (5637 ) early at the sepulchre ; * And when they found (5631 ) not his body , they came (5627 ), saying (5723 ), that they had also seen (5760 ) a vision of angels , which said (5719 ) that he was alive (5721 ). * And certain of them which were with us went (5627 ) to the sepulchre , and found (5627 ) it even so as the women had said (5627 ): but him they saw (5627 ) not . * Then he said (5627 ) unto them , O fools , and slow of heart to believe (5721 ) all that the prophets have spoken (5656 ): * Ought (5713 ) not Christ to have suffered (5629 ) these things , and to enter (5629 ) into his glory ? * And beginning (5671 ) at Moses and all the prophets , he expounded (5707 ) unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself . * And they drew nigh (5656 ) unto the village , whither they went (5711 ): and he made as though (5710 ) he would have gone (5738 ) further . * But they constrained (5662 ) him , saying (5723 ), Abide (5657 ) with us : for it is (5748 ) toward evening , and the day is far spent (5758 ). And he went in (5627 ) to tarry (5658 ) with them . * And it came to pass (5633 ), as he sat at meat (5683 ) with them , he took (5631 ) bread , and blessed (5656 ) it , and brake (5660 ), and gave (5707 ) to them . * And their eyes were opened (5681 ), and they knew (5627 ) him ; and he vanished (5633 ) out of their sight . * And they said (5627 ) one to another , Did (5713 ) not our heart burn (5746 ) within us , while he talked (5707 ) with us by the way , and while he opened (5707 ) to us the scriptures ? * And they rose up (5631 ) the same hour , and returned (5656 ) to Jerusalem , and found (5627 ) the eleven gathered together (5772 ), and them that were with them , * Saying (5723 ), The Lord is risen (5681 ) indeed , and hath appeared (5681 ) to Simon . * And they told (5711 ) what things were done in the way , and how he was known (5681 ) of them in breaking of bread . * And as they thus spake (5723 ), Jesus himself stood (5627 ) in the midst of them , and saith (5719 ) unto them , Peace be unto you . * But they were terrified (5685 ) and affrighted (5637 ), and supposed (5707 ) that they had seen (5721 ) a spirit . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , Why are ye (5748 ) troubled (5772 )? and why do thoughts arise (5719 ) in your hearts ? * Behold (5628 ) my hands and my feet , that it is (5748 ) I myself : handle (5657 ) me , and see (5628 ); for a spirit hath (5719 ) not flesh and bones , as ye see (5719 ) me have (5723 ). * And when he had thus spoken (5631 ), he shewed (5656 ) them his hands and his feet . * And while they yet believed not (5723 ) for joy , and wondered (5723 ), he said (5627 ) unto them , Have ye (5719 ) here any meat ? * And they gave (5656 ) him a piece of a broiled fish , and of an honeycomb . * And he took (5631 ) it , and did eat (5627 ) before them . * And he said (5627 ) unto them , These are the words which I spake (5656 ) unto you , while (5752 ) I was yet with you , that all things must (5748 ) be fulfilled (5683 ), which were written (5772 ) in the law of Moses , and in the prophets , and in the psalms , concerning me . * Then opened he (5656 ) their understanding , that they might understand (5721 ) the scriptures , * And said (5627 ) unto them , Thus it is written (5769 ), and thus it behoved (5713 ) Christ to suffer (5629 ), and to rise (5629 ) from the dead the third day : * And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached (5683 ) in his name among all nations , beginning (5671 ) at Jerusalem . * And ye are (5748 ) witnesses of these things . * And , behold (5628 ), I send (5719 ) the promise of my Father upon you : but tarry (5657 ) ye in the city of Jerusalem , until ye be endued (5672 ) with power from on high . * And he led (5627 ) them out as far as to Bethany , and he lifted up (5660 ) his hands , and blessed (5656 ) them . * And it came to pass (5633 ), while he blessed (5721 ) them , he was parted (5627 ) from them , and carried up (5712 ) into heaven . * And they worshipped (5660 ) him , and returned (5656 ) to Jerusalem with great joy : * And were (5713 ) continually in the temple , praising (5723 ) and blessing (5723 ) God .
