* And when the messengers of John were departed (5631 ), he began (5662 ) to speak (5721 ) unto the people concerning John , What went ye out (5758 ) into the wilderness for to see (5664 )? A reed shaken (5746 ) with the wind ? * But what went ye out (5758 ) for to see (5629 )? A man clothed (5772 ) in soft raiment ? Behold (5628 ), they which are gorgeously apparelled , and live (5723 ) delicately , are (5748 ) in kings courts . * But what went ye out (5758 ) for to see (5629 )? A prophet ? Yea , I say (5719 ) unto you , and much more than a prophet . * This is (5748 ) he , of whom it is written (5769 ), Behold (5628 ), I send (5719 ) my messenger before thy face , which shall prepare (5692 ) thy way before thee . * For I say (5719 ) unto you , Among those that are born of women there is (5748 ) not a greater prophet than John the Baptist : but he that is least in the kingdom of God is (5748 ) greater than he . * And all the people that heard (5660 ) him , and the publicans , justified (5656 ) God , being baptized (5685 ) with the baptism of John . * But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected (5656 ) the counsel of God against themselves , being not baptized (5685 ) of him .
