* Then spake (5656 ) Jesus to the multitude , and to his disciples , * Saying (5723 ), The scribes and the Pharisees sit (5656 ) in Moses seat : * All therefore whatsoever they bid (5632 ) you observe (5721 ), that observe (5720 ) and do (5720 ); but do (5720 ) not ye after their works : for they say (5719 ), and do (5719 ) not . * For they bind (5719 ) heavy burdens and grievous to be borne , and lay (5719 ) them on mens shoulders ; but they themselves will (5719 ) not move (5658 ) them with one of their fingers . * But all their works they do (5719 ) for to be seen (5683 ) of men : they make broad (5719 ) their phylacteries , and enlarge (5719 ) the borders of their garments , * And love (5719 ) the uppermost rooms at feasts , and the chief seats in the synagogues , * And greetings in the markets , and to be called (5745 ) of men , Rabbi , Rabbi . * But be not ye called (5686 ) Rabbi : for one is (5748 ) your Master , even Christ ; and all ye are (5748 ) brethren . * And call (5661 ) no man your father upon the earth : for one is (5748 ) your Father , which is in heaven . * Neither be ye called (5686 ) masters : for one is (5748 ) your Master , even Christ . * But he that is greatest among you shall be (5704 ) your servant . * And whosoever shall exalt (5692 ) himself shall be abased (5701 ); and he that shall humble (5692 ) himself shall be exalted (5701 ). * But woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye shut up (5719 ) the kingdom of heaven against men : for ye neither go in (5736 ) yourselves , neither suffer ye (5719 ) them that are entering (5740 ) to go in (5629 ). * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye devour (5719 ) widows houses , and for a pretence make long prayer (5740 ): therefore ye shall receive (5695 ) the greater damnation . * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye compass (5719 ) sea and land to make (5658 ) one proselyte , and when he is made (5638 ), ye make (5719 ) him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves . * Woe unto you , ye blind guides , which say (5723 ), Whosoever shall swear (5661 ) by the temple , it is (5748 ) nothing ; but whosoever shall swear (5661 ) by the gold of the temple , he is a debtor (5719 )! * Ye fools and blind : for whether is (5748 ) greater , the gold , or the temple that sanctifieth (5723 ) the gold ? * And , Whosoever shall swear (5661 ) by the altar , it is (5748 ) nothing ; but whosoever sweareth (5661 ) by the gift that is upon it , he is guilty (5719 ). * Ye fools and blind : for whether is greater , the gift , or the altar that sanctifieth (5723 ) the gift ? * Whoso therefore shall swear (5660 ) by the altar , sweareth (5719 ) by it , and by all things thereon . * And whoso shall swear (5660 ) by the temple , sweareth (5719 ) by it , and by him that dwelleth (5723 ) therein . * And he that shall swear (5660 ) by heaven , sweareth (5719 ) by the throne of God , and by him that sitteth (5740 ) thereon . * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye pay tithe (5719 ) of mint and anise and cumin , and have omitted (5656 ) the weightier matters of the law , judgment , mercy , and faith : these ought ye (5713 ) to have done (5658 ), and not to leave the other undone (5721 ). * Ye blind guides , which strain at (5723 ) a gnat , and swallow (5723 ) a camel . * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye make clean (5719 ) the outside of the cup and of the platter , but within they are full (5719 ) of extortion and excess . * Thou blind Pharisee , cleanse (5657 ) first that which is within the cup and platter , that the outside of them may be (5638 ) clean also . * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! for ye are like (5719 ) unto whited (5772 ) sepulchres , which indeed appear (5727 ) beautiful outward , but are within full (5719 ) of dead mens bones , and of all uncleanness . * Even so ye also outwardly appear (5743 ) righteous unto men , but within ye are (5748 ) full of hypocrisy and iniquity . * Woe unto you , scribes and Pharisees , hypocrites ! because ye build (5719 ) the tombs of the prophets , and garnish (5719 ) the sepulchres of the righteous , * And say (5719 ), If we had been (5713 ) in the days of our fathers , we would not have been (5713 ) partakers with them in the blood of the prophets . * Wherefore ye be witnesses (5719 ) unto yourselves , that ye are (5748 ) the children of them which killed (5660 ) the prophets . * Fill ye up (5657 ) then the measure of your fathers . * Ye serpents , ye generation of vipers , how can ye (5632 ) escape the damnation of hell ? * Wherefore , behold (5628 ), I send (5719 ) unto you prophets , and wise men , and scribes : and some of them ye shall kill (5692 ) and crucify (5692 ); and some of them shall ye scourge (5692 ) in your synagogues , and persecute (5692 ) them from city to city : * That upon you may come (5632 ) all the righteous blood shed (5746 ) upon the earth , from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias , whom ye slew (5656 ) between the temple and the altar . * Verily I say (5719 ) unto you , All these things shall come (5692 ) upon this generation . * O Jerusalem , Jerusalem , thou that killest (5723 ) the prophets , and stonest (5723 ) them which are sent (5772 ) unto thee , how often would I (5656 ) have gathered thy children together (5629 ), even as a hen gathereth (5719 ) her chickens under her wings , and ye would (5656 ) not ! * Behold (5628 ), your house is left (5743 ) unto you desolate . * For I say (5719 ) unto you , Ye shall not see (5632 ) me henceforth , till ye shall say (5632 ), Blessed (5772 ) is he that cometh (5740 ) in the name of the Lord .
