* In those days came (5736 ) John the Baptist , preaching (5723 ) in the wilderness of Judaea , * And saying (5723 ), Repent ye (5720 ): for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (5758 ). * For this is he (5748 ) that was spoken (5685 ) of by the prophet Esaias , saying (5723 ), The voice of one crying (5723 ) in the wilderness , Prepare ye (5657 ) the way of the Lord , make (5720 ) his paths straight . * And the same John had (5707 ) his raiment of camels hair , and a leathern girdle about his loins ; and his meat was (5713 ) locusts and wild honey . * Then went out (5711 ) to him Jerusalem , and all Judaea , and all the region round about Jordan , * And were baptized (5712 ) of him in Jordan , confessing (5734 ) their sins . * But when he saw (5631 ) many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come (5740 ) to his baptism , he said (5627 ) unto them , O generation of vipers , who hath warned (5656 ) you to flee (5629 ) from the wrath to come (5723 )? * Bring forth (5657 ) therefore fruits meet for repentance : * And think (5661 ) not to say (5721 ) within yourselves , We have (5719 ) Abraham to our father : for I say (5719 ) unto you , that God is able (5736 ) of these stones to raise up (5658 ) children unto Abraham . * And now also the axe is laid (5736 ) unto the root of the trees : therefore every tree which bringeth not forth (5723 ) good fruit is hewn down (5743 ), and cast (5743 ) into the fire . * I indeed baptize (5719 ) you with water unto repentance : but he that cometh (5740 ) after me is (5748 ) mightier than I , whose shoes I am (5748 ) not worthy to bear (5658 ): he shall baptize (5692 ) you with the Holy Ghost , and with fire : * Whose fan is in his hand , and he will throughly purge (5692 ) his floor , and gather (5692 ) his wheat into the garner ; but he will burn up (5692 ) the chaff with unquenchable fire . * Then cometh (5736 ) Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John , to be baptized (5683 ) of him . * But John forbad (5707 ) him , saying (5723 ), I have (5719 ) need to be baptized (5683 ) of thee , and comest (5736 ) thou to me ? * And Jesus answering (5679 ) said (5627 ) unto him , Suffer (5628 ) it to be so now : for thus it becometh (5723 ) (5748 ) us to fulfil (5658 ) all righteousness . Then he suffered (5719 ) him . * And Jesus , when he was baptized (5685 ), went up (5627 ) straightway out of the water : and , lo (5628 ), the heavens were opened (5681 ) unto him , and he saw (5627 ) the Spirit of God descending (5723 ) like a dove , and lighting (5740 ) upon him : * And lo (5628 ) a voice from heaven , saying (5723 ), This is (5748 ) my beloved Son , in whom I am well pleased (5656 ).
