* Paul , a servant of God , and an apostle of Jesus Christ , according to the faith of Gods elect , and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness ; * In hope of eternal life , which God , that cannot lie , promised (5662 ) before the world began ; * But hath in due times manifested (5656 ) his word through preaching , which is committed (5681 ) unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour ; * To Titus , mine own son after the common faith : Grace , mercy , and peace , from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour . * For this cause left I (5627 ) thee in Crete , that thou shouldest set in order (5672 ) the things that are wanting (5723 ), and ordain (5661 ) elders in every city , as I had appointed (5668 ) thee : * If any be (5748 ) blameless , the husband of one wife , having (5723 ) faithful children not accused of riot or unruly . * For a bishop must (5748 ) be (5750 ) blameless , as the steward of God ; not selfwilled , not soon angry , not given to wine , no striker , not given to filthy lucre ; * But a lover of hospitality , a lover of good men , sober , just , holy , temperate ; * Holding fast (5740 ) the faithful word as he hath been taught , that he may be (5753 ) able by sound (5723 ) doctrine both to exhort (5721 ) and to convince (5721 ) the gainsayers (5723 ). * For there are (5748 ) many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers , specially they of the circumcision : * Whose mouths must (5748 ) be stopped (5721 ), who subvert (5719 ) whole houses , teaching (5723 ) things which they ought (5748 ) not , for filthy lucres sake . * One of themselves , even a prophet of their own , said (5627 ), The Cretians are alway liars , evil beasts , slow bellies . * This witness is (5748 ) true . Wherefore rebuke (5720 ) them sharply , that they may be sound (5725 ) in the faith ; * Not giving heed (5723 ) to Jewish fables , and commandments of men , that turn from (5734 ) the truth . * Unto the pure all things are pure : but unto them that are defiled (5772 ) and unbelieving is nothing pure ; but even their mind and conscience is defiled (5769 ). * They profess (5719 ) that they know (5760 ) God ; but in works they deny (5736 ) him , being (5752 ) abominable , and disobedient , and unto every good work reprobate .
