The Apostles' Creed
The fundemental statement of belief held by the Roman Catholic Church, Lutheranism, Anglicanism, Presbyterianism, the Moravian Church, the Methodist Church and the Congregational Church.
Author: UNKNOWN (likely in 5th century Gaul) Introduction: by Randy Pritts
Creeds are simply statements of belief. The Apostle's Creed, though not the first, is perhaps the most influential and widely accepted of these creeds historically. Contained herein are the irreducible essentials, one cannot take away one element without not being Christian at that point. With that said, there are indications from some earlier copies found of this text that the "descended into hell" clause may have been added in later copies. Arguments supporting this are on the lines of Christ "preaching to the captives" (interpreted deceased in Sheol). Arguments against claim the same "preaching to the captives" means souls captive to sin.

The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth
And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell
The third day he rose again from the dead
He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead
I believe in the Holy Ghost
I believe a holy catholic church; the communion of saints
The forgiveness of sins
The resurrection of the body
And the life everlasting. Amen.
