Psalm:6 "My Soul - Greatly Troubled" (commentary as one file) (⇓) |
Today's Commentary Outline:
- But thou, O LORD, how long? - The Saint's Hope Deferred:
- Walking a mile in a real saints' shoes
- "I am weak..." 6:2 (sick)
- "My bones are vexed..." 6:2 (tremble, alarmed, agitated)
- "My soul is also sore vexed..." 6:3 (vehemently vexed)
- "I am weary with my groaning..." 6:6 (gasp, exhausted, tire) (sigh, mourn)
- "All the night make I my bed to swim..." 6:6
- "I water my couch with my tears..." 6:6
- "Mine eye is consumed because of grief..." 6:7 (anger, indignation, provocation)
- It waxeth old because of all mine enemies..." 6:7
- Why all this?
- Cause = Enemy provoked / Remedy = LORD / Hope deferred = sick heart
- observed in real saints of all ages
- on the battlefield in the full heat of battle
- Are the modern day saints experiencing this same thing?
- How long?
- "O LORD...Return O LORD": 6:1 + 6:4
- "Rebuke me not in thine anger..." 6:1
- Rebuke is known to be coming, the petition is for the merciful means of it.
- "Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure..." 6:1
- Is this heat raised because of the saint? or because of the enemy? Yes/Yes
- Chastening is a way of life for the upright, but by what means?
- Is the saint uneffected by God's chastening of HIS many enemies? Rarely
- "Have mercy upon me..." 6:2
- "Heal me..." 6:2
- "Deliver my soul..." 6:4
- "Save me for thy mercies' sake..." 6:4
- Often the saint is most effected by the ungodly.
- By the their foolish onslaught.
- By the their sudden chastisment from the LORD.
- What then to pray?
- Our Hope - Past, Present, Future:
- For in death there is no remembrance of thee... 6:5
- "In the grave who shall give thee thanks?" 6:5
- (if what ungodly say is true)
- Death = process/state of
- Grave = world of
- Can not hope for thy truth?
- Jesus: I am...He who...
- (Can not/Shall not)
- "Whosoever drinketh..."
- "For the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping..." (past connection) 6:8
- "The LORD hath heard my supplication..." (past connection) 6:9
- As a purchased posession.
- As a redeemed child of.
- As an equipped enlisted soldier of.
- "The LORD will receive my prayer..." (future hope) 6:9
- "But thou, O LORD, how long?" (present) 6:3
- Saint (OT) till Advent?
- Saint (NT) till final return?
- Saints (ALL) in terms of our present warefare and needs?
- LOVE - This we can be confident of for all these very reasons!
- "Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity": 6:8
- "Workers of iniquity"
- Idea that iniquity is bigger than any one person.
- Idea that iniquity transcends.
- Idea of a universal state if not for the merciful providence of God.
- workers of panting/exertion
- vain nothingness
- Will of self versus will of God
- "Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed..." 6:10
- (compare to 6:3 vexation of saint) (note that he himself is going through same)
- "Let them return and be ashamed suddenly..." 6:10
- Stated here with the intention of repentance.
- Soon. Quickly.
- Otherwise their end is unimaginable:
- But thou, O LORD, how long?: (Reprise) 6:3
- Encouragement for the troubled saint.
- Not to be short sighted to God's manifold purposes.
- Receive your own chastisement with humility as HIS mercy.
- Receive the enemies insult as natural, to be expected.
- Receive the LORD's rebuke of the masses as necessary and potentially cleansing.
- Pray for the quick turning of hardened hearts.
- Discouragement for the wayward sinner.
- The history of the ungodly life preceeds you.
- The result historically always the same.
- You may believe to have the better calculation and the upperhand.
- But God has manifold and eternal purposes.
- In all things (even the saint's troubled soul) the ultimate glory belongs to God!
