Today's Commentary Outline:
- "The LORD is Known by the Judgment Which He Executeth" (Introduction): 9:16
- We live in a day and age where the LORD is not known because we choose not to think of the LORD in terms of HIS judgment and HIS need for judgment to be executed.
- If one refuses to know the LORD on these specific terms one is refusing to know the LORD on any terms.
- Some might respond "well that's your LORD not mine".
- What is it about the human heart that looks down on any notion of God that includes HIM having reason for, being capable of, and willingly executing judgment?
- How can I better explain to you the less hostile compassionate view of judgment?
- "I will shew forth all thy marvellous works": 9:1 (small scale/grand scale)
- List of potential marvelous works to consider:
- "Thou hast maintained my right and my cause" 9:4 (small scale vs grand scale)
- "Thou satest in the throne judging right" 9:4 (small scale vs grand scale)
- "Thou hast rebuked the heathen" 9:5 (small scale vs grand scale)
- "Thou hast destroyed the wicked" 9:5 (small scale vs grand scale)
- "Thou hast put out their name for ever and ever" 9:5 (small scale vs grand scale)
- Indication 9:6 etc.. of these works meaning something so much more (grand scale):
- "destructions are come to a perpetual end" 9:6
- Reconsider question:
- What judgments had the LORD already excuted?
- What works has HE already performed?
- What judgments remain to be executed?
- On what basis will those final judgments be made?
- How will these final judgments be executed?
- Ultimate question: What will we know about the LORD after these final judgments are executed?
- "The LORD is known by the judgment which He executeth" 9:16 / "I will shew forth all thy marvellous works" 9:1
- "He hath Prepared his Throne for Judgment". 9:7 (HIS marvelous works up to now)
- "He hath prepared (erected) his throne for judgment (verdict/sentencing)" 9:7 (step by step/in plain sight)
- Establishing promise to Adam/Eve (kjv@Genesis:3) and picture of eventual means.
- Establishing unconditional covenant. (Abrahamic - faith)
- Establishing conditional covenant law (Mosiac - establishing a broad long term metrics of proving man's rebellious behavior)
- Establishing direct dealings with a nation (establishment, provision, protection, deliverance, forbearence, revival etc...) despite their frequent rebellion
- Establishment of prophecy leading to Christ.
- Establishment of Christ (through fulfillment of prophecies, miracles, wonders, teachings, verbal confirmations).
- Glorification of Christ (through resurrection, accension, gathering of believers, indwelling presence of Spirit, placing enemies at footstool)
- Testimony of followers (verbal, actions, individual/church) and reaction to.
- How man has reacted to each pillar erected is the basis for how man is to be judged (pillar and whole).
- "He shall judge the world in righteousness" 9:8
- Father has commited all judgement to Son and the power to execute it:
- "He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness" 9:8
- "When HE Maketh Inquisition for Blood" 9:12 (The means of satisfying judgment deserved):
- Inquisition
- Atonement: "without shedding of blood is no remission" kjv@Hebrews:9:22
- Innocent blood:
- Purifying/Purging in order to serve:
- Redeeming/Forgiving (from riches of Grace)
- Made nigh by:
- Determining factor of salvation:
- "He hath prepared his throne for judgment" 9:7 / "I will shew forth all thy marvellous works" 9:1
- "The LORD also will be a Refuge for the Oppressed" 9:9 (The compassionate side of judgment):
- Refuge
- Oppressed (as was Jesus)
- "A refuge in times of trouble" kjv@9:9 (for Jesus?)
- Not even his followers/friends/family would be there for him in His greatest trouble:
- "They that know thy name will put their trust in thee" 9:10 (for Jesus?)
- "Thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee" 9:10
- (for Jesus?)
- "He remembereth them" 9:12 (for Jesus?)
- "He forgetteth not the cry of the humble" 9:12 (for Jesus?)
- "Have mercy upon me, O LORD" 9:13 (Jesus?)
- "Consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me" 9:13 (Jesus?)
- "Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death" 9:13 (Jesus?)
- "That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion" 9:14 (Jesus?)
- "I will rejoice in thy salvation" 9:14 (Jesus?)
- "For the needy shall not alway be forgotten" 9:18 (Jesus?)
- "The expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever" 9:18 (Jesus?)
- "Destructions are come to a perpetual end" 9:6 (Jesus?) (result of judgment)
- "Arise, O LORD": 9:19
- "let not man prevail" 9:19
- "let the heathen be judged in thy sight" 9:19
- "Put them in fear" 9:20
- "that the nations may know themselves to be but men" 9:20
- "The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made" 9:15
- "In the net which they hid is their own foot taken" 9:15
- "the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands" 9:16
- "The wicked shall be turned into hell" 9:17
- "All the nations that forget God" 9:17
- "Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail" 9:19
- "The LORD is Known by the Judgment Which He Executeth" (Conclusion): 9:16
- How is God known? (Change language temporarily to more contemporary - the decisions that He has made - the way He governs Himself/Others)
- Man is best known by similar means
- In God's case many of these decisions we're talking about go back before the foundations of the Heavens and Earth.
- As things have progressed since the fall, God continues to conuct Himself according to these very etarnal decrees.
- There can be no doubt that man has indeed fallen
- though man persistantly attempts to convince himself otherwise
- though man persistantly attempts to cover his shame and guilt behind aprons of good works and religiosties
- though some men attempt rather to bring God either down to their own level or do away with Him all together.
- Even still God goes about His dealings with man even handedly/with only one bias regarding the blood of His only begotten Son in whom and by whom HE created and now saved all things
- So what has God been doing all this time since the fall?
- The erection of His throne/step by step/plain sight (being quite merciful and gracious to all mankind all along the way)
- promise/covenant/metrics/prophecy/establishment of Christ/glorification of/testimony of followers regarding/adverse reaction to.
- a light come into the world/men chosing darkness rather than be exposed.
- pit they dug and have fallen in/destroyed by the turning away.
- Because of the marvelous works leading up to Christ/because of the works of Christ/because of the future judgment and execution by Jesus bestowing upon us the very riches of HIS grace:
- (many will think God an oppressive ogor) (more like oppressive to the self willed and rebellious)
- "I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart" 9:1 (whole not partial/humbled/purified/redeemed)
- "I will be glad and rejoice in thee" 9:2 (will/even in present troubles)
- "I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High" 9:2 (will/no matter what outcome is bestowed to me)
- "When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence" 9:3 (as it should be - shouldn't it)
- "Sing praises to the LORD, which dwelleth in Zion" 9:11
- "Declare among the people his doings" 9:11 (all His doings)
- "The LORD is Known by the Judgment Which He Executeth" 9:16 (ultimately compassionate/ultimately upright/inquiring for blood)
- "I will shew forth all thy marvellous works": 9:1 (compassionately)
