Security and privacy information regarding this PBIBLX3 site.

Preface:

There are four important distinctions to make prior to explaining this site's main security policy:

Web Server - Herein the term web server applies to the primary transport mechanism of the internet as we know it. Your web browser connects to the web server, it processes the transaction of the data requested via the common TCP protocol. You may have heard of some of these servers (Apache/Lighttpd/Hiawatha/etc).
Web Server CGI - The web server has the capability of either serving the requested data via static HTML web pages or dynamic CGI scripted content back to your web browser. To do so there are various scripting languages such as PHP, PERL, Python etc... The CGI runs ontop of the web server.
CGI Developer - This is the person(s) who scripts what the CGI will do when data has been requested. In this case we are telling it to give the web server a package of bible verse data from a database and display information in HTML form that the web server will transmit back to the browser.
Site Administrator - This is the person in charge of installing, maintaining, troubleshooting the local installation of the Web Server and the Web Server CGI.

The need for these four distinctions will become clearer as we move forward into our Security/Privacy policy.

PBIBLX3 General Security Statement:

PBIBLX3 is a Web Sever CGI scripted in PERL for the purpose of publishing static and dynamic public domain Bible and Bible user content in Web Browser compatible HTML and RSS formats. The CGI developer acknowledges that it remains in a "proof of concept" state, though many security enhancements have been made in this latest 3rd revision. The software itself is open source under GPL License and can be reviewed, improved, modified to a hosting sites personal needs. As such. PBIBLX3 is offered as AS IS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY to the public as to its stability and security for sites and users.

This shouldn't however be a problem for most administrators and internet users. PBIBLX 1 and 2 have been in use since 2009 without a major CGI related privacy or security instance.

The CGI itself purposely avoids the use of cookies. The general user is not required to login or present a password unless posting comments or contributing content. Stored passwords are encrypted. No personal information such as emails are stored on the server itself. It does not track general traffic other than when writing access is being permitted, and we do not host advertisers or click/pay add tracking services. Contributed content and user comments are sanitized in and out to prevent HTML/JAVASCRIPT scripting attacks on our users.

This being said, it is up to the administrator to place their installation of PBIBLX3 behind other acceptable security measures such as Certified Trust Encryption and HTTPS, TOR or I2P or other decentralized routed encryption. This might be overkill for the majority of individual or small group installations depending on the country, type of content being hosted, national or ISP surveillance level. It is also up to the user to be aware of and take self securing measures such as VPN, private window browsing, HTTPS DNS, script blocking measures as well. For the purpose and functionalities PBIBLX3 was written for, for most users, it should be just fine as it is.

Third Party CGI Enhancments

PBIBLX3 does incorporate a select few third party developer enhancements to be aware of. For slide projection it implements REVEAL.JS which adds JAVASCRIPT code for display and navigation. Also some installations employee SMARKUP.JS for enhanced editor form integration. Otherwise, PERL modules CGI.PM and HTML\::SANITIZE provide other needed scripting facilities. Each of these third party sources are widely deployed across the internet and audited by the open source community. Security related issues with these third party enhancements are responsibility of these third party developers.

This PBIBLX3 site is for the general public's use and edification. The materials presented are to the best of our knowledge without current copyright and therefore are believed to be public domain. Contributors to this site may author comments and comment pages and indexes of their own as long as such contributions are not knowingly copyrighted.
